after you’ve lived here for SEVEN years as a LEGAL resident. to become a legal resident takes about two years from start to finish, so in about ten years, you could entertain the thought of becoming a national provided you are fluent in spanish, know the history of costa rica, and can sing the national anthem. in the end it’s just easier to boss your employees around and not do any work.
HAHA!!! Too bad we don’t have the same rules here in the U.S.A.

You’re 100% correct! I was brain dead when I replied. I was thinking of Ojochal which is south of Dominical. I have been to Orosi and looked at properties there and I lov that area too. A bit cooler and wetter and I happen to enjoy that.

Beautiful area and close enough to San Jose so you have access to all the amenities. Highly recommend the poster check it out.

Orosi is perhaps about a 4 hour drive from San Jose. If you’re in good health it should be fine. If you have any pre-existing condition and need to be close to doctors and decent medical care then I would not consider Orosi. Also–hope you like warm and humid most of the time because that’s Orosi. It’s beautiful there, however. Not very developed at all compared to many other areas of CR so if you want peace and tranquility it’s a good option. Best advice, however is to digest the feedback you get and then go spend some quality time in the places that sound interesting. I, personally, love the areas south of Dominical all the way down to The Osa.

This is all a WASTE of time. After all, according to the Mayan Calendar aren’t we all supposed to be dead around December 23rd? (this year):(

I understand that the law is the law. My argument was simply one of “principal”. I think that when workers come to “expect” a bonus, whether or not it is deserved, it makes them lazy and/or less motivated to “excel” to the degree where an employer would eagerly want to pay them a bonus. I think when bonuses and tips are taken for granted then service falls off. Earning a bonus is achieved not by just “showing up” for work but by doing better than the next guy (or girl) who should not receive a bonus.

NOBODY should be OWED any Bonus! That’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard of. A bonus is EARNED if the job performed goes beyond and exceeds the employers expectations. Where do people get off EXPECTING they are OWED a bonus simply for showing up for work? That’s just as stupid as those “Tip” Jars you see in Starbucks and other places that provide no service yet these bums expect they should be “tipped” for handing you a cup of coffee.

I have been all over…Osa…Gandoca Manzanillo…Monteverde…Arenal…Tamarindo,,,Quepos/Manuel Antonio..Dominical and areas south. By FAR…my most enjoyable so far was Osa Peninsula and as matter of fact headed back there in less than 2 weeks. I agree with Scott that you will not find Dominical to be a “touristy” type place at all. It is still a “sleepy” little town but may not stay that way for much longer given that what used to be a treacherous road between Quepos and Dominical has now been paved. My first trip was to Monteverde but that was years ago so I am not sure how much that has changed but given that Monteverde is so heavily promoted by travel guides and agents along wth Arenal I would not expect it to be anything like the peacefulness and raw nature setting as the Osa. If you want to “get away” from the tourist crowds then Domincal might be a consideration for you. There are many quaint little towns and beaches south south of Dominical such as Ojochal…Uvita..Ventanas..etc. Good Luck.
If I were at the stage of just thinking about building, I’d be using a cost of $110US per square foot as my estimating factor. You may be able to build for less, but by the time you allow for site prep, utilities, permits, architect’s and engineer’s fees, unforeseen surprises, things that tweak your curiosity, etc, etc, etc, you’ll likely find that $110 isn’t too far off. And it’s always better to estimate high and come in low than the other way around.

That figure would not, of course, include the cost of the property you’re planning to build on.

You must be careful, too, of accepting lowball figures from local builders. There are lots of local “builders”, self-taught in many instances, who can mix and pour cement, lay block, etc, but that doesn’t assure you that their work would be anything like what you’re looking for. There’s a huge difference between enclosing space in order to exclude (most of) the rain and building a home that you’ll find comfortable and adequate to your needs.

We had one of these local guys build our guest house which was, in part, an experiment and learning opportunity. The result was pretty disappointing but it did point us in the right direction for the main house which turned out much, much better.
Good information. That’s why I would be patient and not rush as I would want to take as much time as needed to find someone that has a solid established track record and would come with excellent referrals as well as I would would want to see some of his previous work. But the info you provided is helpful. Thx.
hey, bogino, i’m curious — how do you plan to “fight”?
HAHA! I knew it wouldn’t take long for you to poke your head out…..

    In response to your question:

By VOTING for starts and through activism….you know…..the things a democracy allows you to do. And if those don’t work then take it to the next level whereever that may be. I do not “escape” to another country and then whine and complain about something from afar.

Why don’t you watch the Italian news and see what’s really going on and why. the looney tunes people are the folks like yourself who believe nothing is happening. you must be part of the generation that benefited from the deliberate dumbing down of the population. stop watching Fox news and see what’s really going on in the world.:lol:

i think it was john d. rockefeller who said of the Fed: “If the people knew what we were doing there would be a revolution.” well, the revolution is here. to understand how twisted and demented the premise of the Fed really is (no, it is NOT a federal bank — it is a PRIVATE bank) please read The Creature from Jekyll Island — it will set you straight by about page 20 of the 800 pages of lies, corruption, and monetary manipulation of the banking system using fiat money. if you are a smart person, you will want to take every dollar you have out of the banking system and stash it in your mattress.
