Let me start by stating I am not asking for legal advice. I remember reading somewhere that Costa Rica has a law that has the word “Silencio” in it that basically says if a government entity doesn’t give you an answer within a reasonable amount of time, it is the same as giving you permission. Does anyone know what situations this pertains to? I am trying to get a building permit and cannot get an answer. I have searched the forums here, so I am not sure where I read about this.
    Thanks
Wish I could apply that “law” to my wife……:lol::lol:

    Agree with the above post by Scott. Too many people DO NOT use their brains or think things out and that’s why these situations occur. Reminds me of the recent thread concerning Paragon Properties and so many investors losing so much money. Why? Because many of them “didn’t use their brains”.

    After reading all the different commentaries it seems fair to conclude that with $100K a year to live off one can live like a king there. Am I correct?

    I wonder out of the roughly 1000 “victims” how many of those actually traveled to Costa Rica and visited, touched, felt and saw what it was they were investing in or was this primarily an internet scam.

    You didn’t mention a budget so not sure if you want economy or higher end but I splurged a bit and stayed at Lost Iguana Resort. That is on the other side of Arenal, not the La Fortuna side and it is elevated and further away from town and all the other hotels so that if you want seclusion and peace and quiet amongst an incredible setting with views that will knock your socks off then I would highly recommned. Cost I believe is around $200 p/night:
To all of this I would simply add that the body of information, good and bad, current and out of date, is simply too great for any single practitioner to absorb and assimilate. I certainly don’t expect any general practitioner to know it all. Nor do I expect that of the endocrinologist who helps manage my diabetes (and who’s doing a fine job).

    It is for this reason alone that I insist on keeping all my medical care options open. Yes, I’m enrolled in the CAJA, but I elect to choose my own doctors and to change them or get second opinions whenever I feel the need. And it’s why I’m enrolled in Medicare.
And lets not forget to cherish the fact that we still have the Freedon to Choose but that freedom, under these new healthcare reforms may become more and more in jeapordy.
there are some pretty out of date US doctors, too. i think it depends on where you live here in Costa Rica. I have neighbors who have some very complicated medical issues, including MS, and they have gotten exemplary care from the CAJA and the doctors there. I had to educate my doctor in the states more than once on the risks of certain medications, which he was told by the pharam rep were perfectly safe. in my experience, you had better be pretty educated about your own medical conditions rather than trusting any doctor implicitly (unless of course you’ve been hit by a bus!)
What’s that expression? “Knowledge is Power”? I truly believe that. And given all the new tools available to us these days through the internet learning and understanding as much as possible about ones own medical issues will likely help you in the long run receive better care by asking the right questions and exploring various options.

    An example is just the other day I read a report where it was diclosed that Roches’s Avastin which is used to treat various types of cancers had also been shown to be very effective in the treatment of Macular Degeneration the Wet type). Additionally, a single injection of Avastin in the eye has a far…far..lower cost than the more common alternative which is Lucentis. Being a Diabetic with some mild Diabetic Retinopathy I contacted my Retina Specialist whom I have been seeing for a dozen years now and who at one point was the Director of the Retina Division at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA and I asked him about this report and whether the success of Avastin could also benefit patients with Diabetic Retinopathy to which he replied back that he has been using Avastin shots in a number of his patients with more severe DR for over 5 years and with great success. Educating one self I believe is essential in ensuring that you are comfortable that you are receiving the best possible medical care available.

    I. myself, would rather pay a few extra $$ to someone working in a small family owned business in a more entrepreneurial setting that smiles while they’re helping their customer and has a positive attitude unlike most of the emotionless robots that simply are their to exist that we usually see in the Walmarts and other mega corporate entities we have to deal with here in the U.S.

    HAHA!!!! I wonder why???:lol::lol:

    The earlier comment about renting is very appropriate if you have never visited here or maybe only have limited experience down here. Rentals are unbelievably cheap and affordable and you’re not tied down. You can rent for a year or 2 and if you still really like it you can buy later. The real estate market here in CR as I’ve mentioned in previous posts is very inefficient and illiquid. If you buy now and decide in a year you don’t like it and need to sell then in all likelihood you’ll take a pretty big hit.
