    Update:
As you can see from recent news regarding this matter, the bill is not going through as expected. In addition, our attorney is meeting with the heads of the Congress and Immigration today to further discuss our concerns. Members of Congress plan to come to Atenas after the first of the year to meet with us, but no specific date has been set. That is all for now.

From what I’ve heard, You can get a Skype phone with a US phone number. You can then have calls to that number forwarded to your US cell phone here. Anyway, might want to check it out.

We had a group of about 20 people go to Congress to meet with one Congressman who was interested in discussing a petition we had developed through the efforts of our CR attorney. The group consisted of Gringos, CR Citizens, and one person from Panama. Many of us had to leave after 2 hrs because the rented van had to be back in Atenas at :a specific time. However, our attorney and 3 others stayed until 7:00 PM. The result of their stay was very encouraging. They met with 14 other members of Congress. During these meetings 2 petitions were introduced to reduce the amount of money required for each status, and not to make the amounts retroactive. One thing this does is that now the bill must go back to square one, which gives us more time before any final decision is made.

Through these meetings, our attorney will be meeting with the heads of Congress and the Department of Migration next week. There will also be Congressmen coming to Atenas to discuss our concerns and those of the Tico people here.

This is not written in stone except to say that we just received copies of the two petitions that the Congressmen submitted. – At least it is a start. This is the best I can tell you at this time.

    Sprite,
If I read it correctly, the proposed law states $2000 for you and $2000 for your spouse. Pretty steep for a married couple wouldn’t you think?

We just returned from a stay at La Fortuna last Monday. We stayed at the Hotel Arenal Manoa. The hotel is made up of separate buildings, with each having 2 separate rooms. This setup allows for every room to have a great view of the volcano. The entire hotel is very clean and well maintained, and the service is great. The only down-side is the resturant is a little pricy, but the food is outstanding. – They do have a website if you want to check it out. Enjoy your trip.

We are in the process of getting my pension check direct deposited into BCR. One thing to note, is that it has to be a BCR checking account – they won’t do it for a savings account. This is also true for Social Security checks – Hope this helps

    David,
We are in the process of building a home in Atenas. It is a turn-key home with granite countertops, custom sinks and cabinets, pool, some landscaping w/lawn, driveway and gated entrance. When we contracted the deal, prices for this ranged from $60-$65/SF. 6 months later, mainly due to material costs, the price for the same home is now $75-$80/SF. I’ve also heard that in a nearby town, the prices are now over $95/SF. As in the US, it appears that cost is going to be determined where you build, and it is going to keep going up. Thank God, we got in under the wire. – Hope this helps

Thanks to all of you! – We drove to Escazu yesterday and through your replies, found a store that specializes in home theater systems. Got a stand that is perfect for the TV and a pair of speaker stands. The price was a little high, but a fair price for items like that in Costa Rica.

    Thanks again for your help,

I would suggest the Garman Nuvi series. Sergio just loaded the CR map in mine yesterday, and it makes a huge difference.

    Scott,
I appreciate your reply, and am looking forward to what you suggest. However, I love the country where I was born and raised, and would like to keep current with what is happening while I am in Costa Rica. Most of the time, when watching CNN (especially Lou Dobbs) I get very upset with the way the country is headed. But, I still need to know. Again, thanks Scott – really looking forward to getting away from it all in spite of how I feel about my country.

    Take care,
