I amj trying to furnish a 2500 sq. ft. place that Valicy (Scott MacDougall) built in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste and I’d like to be able to do so without hiring a designer. I was hoping to get names of furniture stores I could visit in or near Sarchi that have Costa Rican tropical style furniture – ones that folks who read this forum have tried and found to be reputable and perhaps cater to those who only know “Tarzan Spanish” I’m doing my Rosetta Stone lessons every night, but have a long way to go. To be more concise – an recommendations for furniture stores near San Jose or Guanacaste?

Hi Scott… this is just a request for any additional info on furniture. Definitely not a commercial post. Sorry if it sounded like one…. carol

We got to fly the first nonstop Delta flight LIR to LAX on Dec. 16 2006. They had champagne, food (unheard of at LIR), a band, all the press. It was soooo cute! Delta has continued with flights 204 and 205 nonstop once per week and I hear American may be flying that route, nonstop, soon, also. What about Taca? When do they plan to fly into LIR? Anyone know? I hope Liberia continues to feel more like a fruitstand than an international airport, but the convenience of nonstop flights is so nice.

I agree with you! In terms of buying in foreign countries, this is my first experience. I have however, been to Cabo every year, except 2, over the last two decades. Watching the growth and demand that occurred there, I feel pretty confident about CR. Our market in Southern California is really taking a HUGE hit. Foreclosures are up 40+% in just the last 8 weeks. This kind of momentum we don’t need! I’ve been selling homes, land, and businesses here since 1990 and I have to say that this scenario looks pretty scary. If all the CR money was coming from equity lines, that market is in trouble, too. The fact that the majority are cash buyers, though, means that those folks who have property will hold on to it. They aren’t able to use it as an ATM (like Californians!) and to walk away would be a very bad decision. Here, in CA, we have so many homeowners that have these no money down loans, that giving them back to the bank only costs them in credit ratings. I perceive CR as a very different market, and my logic leads me to agree that the housing market has an inverse relationship to ours in the US.

Hi! I just spoke with Barry who also ships lots of crates out of the US. He advised that if you want to ship a used auto, that upgrading from a 20’to a 40’crate would allow room for an auto and that it would only cost an additional $1000. from the LA area. He also advised that the lowest rate of tax on a reliable small 4×4, used, would be a 2004. The CRV, Rev 4, Xtera, etc. were makes he suggested for the rough roads. Barry’s email is Barry1@ice.co.cr and his phone number is 843-278-5573. I can’t recommend him because I have not yet used his services. I do plan to, though, as he is a wealth of information!

    Hi John,

My co-owners and I are interested in furnishing our new Sol y Mar condos (beachfront) in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste. Your “quiz” exactly expressed what we have been inquiring about. Did you ever get any answers to your questions? There are 12 owners and we each have 3 bedrooms and baths and large patio and living areas. If you found a place suitable for bulk purchases or that might work with us via email etc. please share!! CarolWesterman@aol.com

in reply to: Playa Hermosa – It’s our fault they build more,no? #179360

Yes, Scott. I agree, however, I have seen some evidence that suggests that there is a sort of peer pressure to keep Costa Rica clean and green. It would be great if that could prevail and keep the kind of development that destroys the peaceful enjoyment of CR at bay. I know that is dream, not reality. Oh well.
