I agree – sight unseen would be crazy. However, if you have seen the land or rental unit and have evaluated it as a good buy, then I would think the potential return on appreciation alone would outperform the 10 – 11 % average return of an S&P fund, over the long haul, without the downside. Seems buy and hold for a few years would make sense. Also should remain fairly liquid compared to an 86% dump on the market 1999 – 2002) where you would not want to take cash out for, most likely, several years, unitl the market recovered and your share value increased. This wouild also assume you would be buying your own place to live in CR.
Also, about $4000 and 45 days to set up a Qualified Plan to a self-directed IRA that will allow real estate purchases in CR.
cdcallenMemberDo you have high speed internet and satellite tv avaialble in your unit ?
cdcallenMemberNot yet- have sent paperwork – but nothing has been done yet. Also – FYI – CR Mortgage did call me back, after hearing about a previous post in this forum. They said they would e-mail me the info I needed to do the loan and apologized for not getting back to me. Problem is – that was about a week ago. No e-mail yet. Hope I get something going soon as we are going to CR on 7/20 on a real estate buying tour.
cdcallenMemberI have submitted inital documents to them over 2 weeks ago and have yet to get a response on my pre-approval request. They connected me to a US broker who has yet to use them. He stated to me that it is a big IF right now if they could do anything for us. I have just contacted a company called mdomortgage.com and spoke to Scott (in CR). They profess to do loans in US for CR property. He is to contact me back today. Hoping for the best as we are coming down 7/20 on a house hunting visit. Not counting out CR Mortgage but so far – nothing.
cdcallenMemberCould someone please provide Barry’s contact info? Also anyone use Guardian Angels or Ship Costa Rica.com ? Anyone suggest one over the other (Moving from Ohio – USA)
cdcallenMemberThank You ! Sounds like I should subscribe to AM Costa Rica – lots of info.

cdcallenMembercindyc,
Thank you for the great info ! Wow – really sounds like a production to get your dog in. The problem is we will have 4 dogs, big and small, that will need transported back and forth !
Did you have to provide your own kennels or will the airline provide them? Can’t imagine where I would store 4 kennels or how I could get them to the property. Guess I would have to buy a truck there and have someone meet me.
Were you from the US? How long have you been in CR? What section of the country do you live in? Are things working out for you?
My wife & I are just in the begining of the process. We are taking our first tour this Summer and plan to buy a house this year in the Central Valley area – then transition our move to CR over the next 3-4 years from Ohio. We are both later 50’s and are excited about getting to your “Paradise “.
I appreciate your previous answer – very helpful. I understand if you do not have time to answer my questions. We hate to impose on anyone, but as a “newbe” the best way to see how things really are there is to talk to people who have already made the move.
Thanks Again,
Chris Callen
