in reply to: Don’t Fool Yourself, Crime is Getting Worse in C #190566

I’m just replying in general, not to this specific post.

If crime is on the rise what is the reason?
    1. Is the economy getting tougher and people are having to resort to this, but do not want to?
    2. Is this increase in crime mainly targeting non Cost Ricans? Any numbers on that one?
If it is not across the board as far as targeting due to “National Origin” then this would concern me.
    3. Is this increase in crime mainly just becoming more apparent due to more crime being reported?
I would hope that this potential increase in crime is not pointed disproportionately to non Costa Ricans.

in reply to: Tax Free up to 70,000 US $ ? #184772

The scenario I’m referring to would be consulting for my business that is located in the USA, and would be consulting to it via the internet and telephone and would be paid from that business while here in Costa Rica.
Would either being a resident or not being a resident cause a issue either way?
I would not be keeping any Locals from working as this would be a preexisting job that only I could perform.
Of course I plan on consulting with my CPA but would like any insight onthis while I’m here from anyone that has info.

    Thanks for the info,
I will contact my CPA in the States and get them to look into the particulars for me.
I did not know if this was for income produced OUTSIDE of the US or if it could be from within the US.
    Will look into it deeper.

in reply to: Family Vacation #184761

    Jeff,
My wife and I, 2 boys 8 and 5 have been here since June 2nd and have been to Volcann Arenal, Volcano Poas, and near Poas is “La Paz” a great set of water falls and also Aviary and Butterfly, Hummingbird and Frog living exhibits.
We just got back from Quepos/ Manual Antonio on the Pacific and we got too enjoy Horseback rides, Surfing Lessons, Zip lining through the rain forest, etc and have really had a great time.
I’m sure that there will be many more ideas from the others long timers that are more “in the know” than we are.

in reply to: Health Insurance in Costa Rica – Options? #184538

I’ve recently heard of a Health Insurance Policy that will cover you in the USA and also in Costa Rica.
Some friends of mine have it and are living in San Louis, near Grecia, and say they have used it in the USA with no problems.
I’m sorry that I do not have any more details but if interested in this I can get you more info like the name etc.
I’m not selling this and am in no way connected to this company, don’t even have it myself, but just looking for the moment.

Do the numbers that are comparing crime stats take into effect that foreigners may be more of a target than locals?
I’m not saying this is true, just wondering if there is a higher ratio of crimes against US citizens as compared to the general public?

in reply to: Internet problem with RACSA #183791

Seems like I remember seeing some directional attennas that would allow you to beam a high speed interent connection from 1 place to another if there in line of site of each other.
Of course you would have to have a willing participant that already has a high sepeed connection.
I’ve seen crude homebuilt anntennas that were made from a a pringles can to show how easy it is. I thought that this would be an option for those that are living in places that will not see highspeed under the normal rate for years to come.
Would the internet service provider consider this illegal?

I saw a show on TV once about Pickpockets and other scams in Las Vegas.
It told the story about how pickpockets will put up a small sign telling tourist to “Be Carefull, Pickpockets are in the area”
All the tourist would then reach down and touch their wallet, hidden money etc while the pickpockets watched to see where it was hidden.

I’m thinking of bringing some of that tire puncture stuff and applying it to my tires asap to try to help with the flats. Might at least get me further down the road.

in reply to: Costa Rica’s Electricity and Water Problems #183092

I think that I remember reading something similiar in Popular Science.
What I remember was a location that had a huge tide difference and they opened some large gate like structures that allowed a gigantic holding pond to fill with ocean water. When the tide started to drop they would shut off this gaste and then allow the water to exit through some turbines to genertate electricity. That is if my memory serves me.

While I’m no expert on modern technology I think that it would take more power to pump the water back up to the higher reservoir than they would recieve as it came back through the turbines to the lower resevoir. The generators and pump motors are not 100% efficient and this would actually lose more power than it made. Unless there is someting about this that I did not understand.
