Well the way i had it done won’t help you. Gave my wife , my son , my passport to our travel agent at costa rica Express. He had this done with the stamp in a day. Didn’t even have to go ourselves. Costa Rica connections I guess. But prior to doing this , I didnt realize there was a permanent option , so the attorney was right in the sense that every time you leave you need to do this . When i found out about this , I asked why wasnt I informed about this option , Guess what the naswer was ” You didnt ask ”
Good luck in the CR maze of things .

My son was born in Costa Rica. 2 important documents you get are the Consular Report of US citizen born abroad ( this will be their equivalent US birth certificate ) and the passport. We had no problem having my son’s name listed only with my last name. Just fill out the paperwork without the second last name. I don’t know if this is a requirement for the passport or not , but I remember the US consulate asking me to prove I was residing in the US when I applied for the US passport for my son. They asked me for ID’s , shool transcripts, tax returns, and I believe something else, this was 4 years ago though. Just get this done the sooner the better.

I also recommend you go to immigration and get a permanent exit stamp put on the passport once you get it . Even if the child is a US citizen, being born in Costa Rica falls into the CR rules for taking a minor out of the country.

Ok, you said residency exemption . If one doesnt have residency here , and under a tourist visa, can the $500 exemption still apply ? basically I am bringing craft supplies like you would buy at Michael’s or Joanne fabrics. It is for a school project my wife is doing, she is doing an art project for 35 students and there is alot of it as repetitive items , brand new stuff, so it will look like it is for selling . Supplies here aren’t really expensive at all, but these are just things that that are Brand name , maybe betteer quality supplies .

Don’t know much about the subject, but is there a free trade agreement with China and Costa Rica ? So when you say cut out the middleman, CR can just import direct from Chica anyways .

If your willing to pay lots of $$$ , you can have ANYTHING shipped to CR “approved ” by customs. Your best bet is to have someone bring 1 in their luggage from time to time.

Well I talk to Mario ( one of the owners ) and he said they do anywhere from 1 to few offroad events, but they don’t have pre set dates. It depends how many drivers they can get together and then they just go. This probably is no help , but maybe check them out when you do move here to add your contact phone so they can call you when they do something.

Shaun, I have dealt with this having a son with a US passport being born in Costa Rica, and also a step-daughter with a CR passport. The main objective for immigration is that the natural parents give authorization for the minor child to leave.

In the case of both parents still married , it is easily done by going to the immigration office and signing a declaration to attest that they are in fact the parents and request that a authorization be stamped on the passport for the child to leave. We made the mistake the first time , just asking for authorization , which they did, but they did a one time authorization good for 30 days. We later found out we could have asked for a permanent authorization. ( I guess we had to be mind readers to know that , they didnt offer explain it the first time . In fact , the second time we had to get his for my son , we just had the travel agent here in CR take the passport to immigracion for us , and they got it done in a day for free. Wonder how they did that without us there, maybe connections , you never know here.

The other problem I had was for my step daugther. the natural father was unwilling to even acknowledge us . So , although i was the legal guardian and my step daughter had US residency , the immigration office denied her. We had to go to the family court to get this straightened out. Guess what it was denied again and mainly because of the father not willing to cooperate. It took 3 years for us to get her permiso ! Which is one of the main reasons I decided to move here, this tore th family apart . as I worked in the US. After almost giving up the fight I sold everyhting and made a move here. Guess what , no sooner that I got here , she was granted permanent permiso !

There shoudnt be a problem if the natural father is willing to go to migracion with the mother in the first place.

If you do not get this permiso stamped on the passport prior to going to the airport, exit for the minor will be denied. If you do have the permiso, go to the airport, pay the $26, then go to the minor booth by the gate entrance, they will sign off on the passport , then you can go to the counter for your tickets.

Hope this helps . If in doubt , there is immigration office on the second floor of the departure area of airport. you can go up there and have everyhting exlplained properly. You can go prior to departure date just to be on th safe side .

If your kids were born in Costa Rica, even if they are US citizens / US passports , you need to get the ” permiso de salida prior to leaving the country.” I can explain more if that is the case , just let me know. There is no fee for this .

Your right greed is the back bone . It’s not just greedy brokers and lenders. The investors were buying the junk, creating the market of high LTV and no income documentation products in the first place. People will invest in higher return , higher risk products, the lenders and brokers are just the middlemen. The general public in their own greed , lets buy investment properties with no money down and resell later for huge profits. You know how many people I advised not to get into some of the products available, they didnt give a damn either, it’s the American way , I want my piece now I’ll worry later attitude. Blame this on society’s own ignorance too of financial matters.

My best deal may not be another’s best. for example , Scotia Bank will offer a longer fixed period, but there is a 3 months interest prepayment penalty during the fixed period to get out . Improsa may not extend the fixed period as long, maybe 3 years , but no prepayment penalty. So someone looking to buy and sell may not want to pay the penalty, someone looking to hold will take the prepay at a nicr rate.

Land for the most part is 65% with several lenders. I actually found one that does 90% on residential or land , but the documentation may be trickier to get. The fixed period is only a year, then variable. the contact couldnt tell me though what the margin or index was once it turns variable, but i am still researching that one.

Find out if the marriage was registered in the registro yet , even though wrong. I had a an error myself on my documents. There is a window to the left just as you walk into the registro in San Jose ( I am only assuming all documents are recorded here ) , they will give you a form to start an (expidiente) file / investigation to possibly correct your error. If I have the form , I’ll post the requirements needed so you can make just 1 trip and have all the items with you. I tell you though it is not a quick fix, I’ve done alot of legwork and filings on my own and learned alot about the system here. It is not just attorneys that make errors. The registro also makes data entry errors themselves , so it wouldnt matter what attorney you had to begin with in that case. I ‘ve spent over a year correcting 2 errors that were made. I do have an attorney now that I use, and I will tell you, to get things done here, you have to have contacts that know the game ( la jugagda ) they get things done and if you have to pay a professional fee for what you want done , then pay it . You get what your $$ pays for ( actually doesnt pay for ) when you start looking around for the cheapest rates for services. You are better off doing it on your own if you intend to go the cehap route. Learn the language a bit , ask questions , don’t be intimidated by the process and you can get things done too.

Residents and non-residents . Cuscatlan, Scotia Bank, Lafise, Mutual Alajuela , Improsa , Banco Nacional, . You will not have time unless you spend many hours there talking to them to find all the details on the lending parameters. I have spent many trips to banks and now this event to get the scoop on mortgages . Many details which are different with every lender, to consider.

Sabanilla is east of San Jose, towards San Pedro, go a bit north – east. very close to San Jose. You have to ask once you get in Sabanilla where it is . I actually may be going there around the time your free 8/16 – 8/18. My cousin is flying in 8/15, and we usually make a point to have a few rounds at this local hangout. If you like we can meet you ( evening though ). FYI, it is a very small cantina, locals , but great atmoshphere / food. Very cheap, you pay locals’ prices not touristy prices.

Otherwise, I can ask them about the details and post it here.
