Ah, yes. That makes sense. I feel like such a dummy for not figuring that out! Must be having a brain fart!

August 31, 2014 at 8:18 pm in reply to: Why not tell the truth about what life is like in Costa Rica? #202223CHERYLJKMemberSeriously reconsider dropping Medicare. I realize if you can’t afford both, you are in a pickle. But a friend of mine who has lived in CR for close to 40 years was vacationing in the States when he had a heart attack. He had surgery and was confined to the hospital for a long time. You can bet your bippy he was glad he had Medicare coverage. If you never, ever plan on returning to the States (not even for a visit), I can understand you wanting to drop coverage. I don’t know about enrolling for Obamacare when you are eligible for Medicare. I know for my husband and me coverage will be quite affordable once he leaves his job and we no longer have medical coverage. For 2 of the plans it will cost nothing, and for one other it will cost $29/month. It will be a while before we will be covered under caja, and although we will be living in CR by the end of this year, I will sign us up for Obamacare in the event we need it upon returning to the States.

You’re a little out of the loop, apparently. GW Bush left office in 2009.
That’s pretty much what I said to my brother after I visited the White house last spring, and he asked me if I had seen the idiot who lives there.

An American can legally travel to Cuba under a cultural exchange program offered by travel agencies in the U.S. He is also right that they are very expensive.
CHERYLJKMemberI ended up buying an unlocked IPhone and went to AT&T for a SIM card, so no more Verizon for us.

Hope on your return everything work out for you.
I, too, am wondering how you came up with $55 for Caja.
CHERYLJKMemberjohnr, I am also interested in solar info. Will be moving to Tambor in December and building a house next year.
CHERYLJKMemberA friend of mine went to Nicaragua on Monday, the 14th, and she didn’t need a vaccination. So, I don’t know what is going on as far as vaccinations are concerned.
CHERYLJKMemberSweikert925 and Costaricabill, thank you for your kind words!! Just to let you know, we won’t ship our container until some time next year. We plan on waiting until our house is near completion. Of course, we could always change our minds and ship it sooner, but I will definitely post information on our move for all to see!!
CHERYLJKMemberSince you mentioned shipcostarica and shiptocostarica, I thought I would tell you about the quotes I received form both companies. My husband and I live near Philadelphia, and I have been getting quotes for shipping a 40′ container. Barry Wilson’s company quoted me a price of $11,990. This includes customs duty. They will give us 3 hours to load the container. Charlie’s quote was $9178. This also includes the duty, and he will give us 4 hours to load the container. Both companies will deliver our goods to our house in CR and unload.
A third company quoted me $9,100, but this DOES NOT include customs duty!! I have been patiently waiting for over a month for 2 other companies to give me their promised quotes.
And while I am at it, I’ll mention that both companies have storage facilities in CR should you need it. Wilson charges $350/month and Zeller, $320/month.
CHERYLJKMemberI tried researching it on the web. The only thing I came up with is Tamarindo weather. In Aug. the average temperature is 81 degrees. For the month of August Tamarindo averages 21 days of rain and 210 mm of rain. Compare that to January with an average of 7 days of rain and 4 mm. You can get a 10 day forecast for Potrero on the web, so I suggest you do this before you leave. My hubby and I travel to Tambor in the southern part of the Nicoya Peninsula. Our experience has been that it rains for maybe an hour or two and then stops. But then again, our friends who live in Tambor have experienced constant rain for days.
CHERYLJKMemberJohnR,
I’m not sure these programs are what I want. According to their web site, Traveler costs either $60 or 120/month, depending on the minutes. They both seem to be geared towards international calling. I need a phone for in-country as I rarely make international calls. But I do plan on visiting our local ATT store and checking these plans out because I realize I might misunderstand something, plus it never hurts to check out all your options. So I thank you for your input!!
CHERYLJKMemberOthers will be WAY more qualified to answer your question than I as I am just starting to look into this myself. I don’t have a smart phone, but my husband does, and here is what little we have found out so far. I have been advised by the people at Verizon to buy an unlocked smart phone and then buy a SIM card in CR. I currently have an unlocked Nokia phone (not smart) that I use when we go to CR. I buy a SIM card at the airport. Then when you return to your home country you can put another SIM card into it. We have also been advised by our friends in CR to buy an Iphone. The person we talked to at Verizon suggested we use either AT&T or T-Mobile for when we are back in the States.
CHERYLJKMemberWe are going through the same situation. Luckily one of our friends who lives near by said we can use her address. You can also rent a box at places like the UPS store. Then you will maintain an address in the States, plus they will forward your mail to you. But I think it is easier (and cheaper!) to have a friend or relative do it.
