It should just take one (for the process). Make an appointment with the ARCR, open your bank account, then be around for 3-4 days to process it. Then the next time you will need to come down is when they make an appointment with immigration to obtain your cedula (ID card). So we made 3 trips, you can do it in 2. We were never fingerprinted in the U.S., they took us upon our appplication to the police station in San Jose which submits those to Interpol.
We have just set our date to move which is 8/21; it’s exhilarating and scary at the same time. I’m just in process of getting quotes to move.
We’re going to take some household goods and appliances and one car. Ouotes are ranging in the $6-8,000 range. Still tryng to pin this one down but would be happy to share the outcome.Cindy

cindycMemberWe used the ARCR; they were very good and our residency only took about 4 months. They also went down to Immigration with us and helped expedite that process so we were just in there a couple hours to pick up our cedula which I guess is really good; some people say it has taken them all day. We got all our notarized and authenticated paperwork (marriage cert, birth cert, police report)here in California and then took it down to CR to apply. The ARCR also accompanied us to the police station to get fingerprinted at that point. They recommended Banco National, so that’s what we did.
cindycMemberWhen we applied we had to deposit the $60K right away which was kind of a surprise for us. Another surprise was that it took Banco National about three days to set up the CD and there was more paperwork to sign; so since we were leaving back to the US the morning after the account was opened we had to make an extra trip back to finish off the paperwork. So, make sure you’re going to be in Costa for a few days after you apply.

cindycMemberHi,
I’m currently using http://www.costaricahousebuilders.com; we’re building just north of Dominical. Patrick Heinen, our contractor, I think would build in that area, so try contacting him. He’s great. We have been out of the country the entire time he has been building; we go down every 6-8 weeks.
Everything has been more than on schedule and professionally done.Cindy
cindycMemberHi, try http://www.costaricahousebuilder.com; I’m using them to build two houses right now and they are great!

cindycMemberHi, I also recommend http://www.costaricahousebuilder.com; they are building our houses just south of Quepos and are doing a wonderful job. Patrick Heinen is our contractor and I can give you more info if you want to contact me personally.
cindycMemberDavid, can you please tell me what pet transportation service you used?
cindy@ccobb.net. Thanks!cindycMemberHi Scott,
We were stunned too; although they did say it was between Nicaragua and Panama!? They made the market sound like something it isn’t; all hype and I’m wondering how our friends at “low cost acreage!” are going to fare from this publicity. I’ve been through this with media before; you have no control on what they say, they didn’t even talk about the property you were on, which seemed gorgeous. I bet the Remax guy gets some business…

cindycMemberHi Koty,
I have also been watching this closely and hope that this eventually happens as we bought some property along this stretch. One good sign is our neighbors just south of us just sold an easement across their property for the purpose of widening the road. I’m hoping that they wouldn’t be buying up property unless they really intended to do something. But you never know; I’m not holding my breath!cindycMemberHola, I met with Randy and Rhonda about a year ago; I didn’t actually buy property from them, but they seemed like nice people and were focused on showing people properties that were affordable and a good value. Some agents I met with went straight for the priciest property they could find, but I didn’t find that to be the case with them. Having said that, since I didn’t actually buy property I can only speak from my intial impression. As all these boards will tell you, it’s good to talk to a lot of people and do a lot of looking. I just found another part of the country that I liked better; purely personal taste. I would be cautious with anyone claiming they can make you 50%.
cindycMemberHi,
I’ve heard if you have less than about 500 lbs. it might pay to ship it air freight. Another option might be to share a container with someone who isn’t too far from you and is going in your time frame.
