We have been in Costa Rica for 3 1/2 years. The first 2 years we concentrated on developing our garden from virgin soil and that took nearly all of our days except in the rainy season when we were very grateful for a few hours of doing “nothing”. The last year and a half have been so full with no time to either be bored or having to look for something to do. There is just so much here in Costa Rica but it is entirely up to the individual to go out and find all the fascinating and different aspects of living here. We are both in our 60 + years but it makes no difference to our getting out there and doing it! Pura Vida.

We have had the most excellent repairs/service done on our GE wall oven and counter top by a company called Serviplus (Mabe) . You can contact Danny at 8334 9201 or email danny.barrrientos@mabe.co.cr. He speaks good English and the servicemen who came also spoke good English.
Great company.

Sky (out of Mexico)provide a very good service with a variety of channels, including BBC. Installation service is excellent. Their top-choices ‘UNIVERSAL’ subscription costs only $54.90 per month. Compared to the local cable service ‘Supercable’ Sky’s choice’s are a 100 percent improvement.

Okay so here is the absolute current ( as at todays date) the true and tried renewal of drivers license system.
Our original licenses were obtained using our passports as I.D’s. But, of course, in the last 2 years we renewed our passports and were issued with new passport numbers. So one now has to change the I.D’s in the “main system.
1. We caught a taxi from San Jose central to the MOPT office in Paso Ancho. It is far easier and less stressful than trying to drive there yourself. As you go through the main security gate turn right and go to the very end office and to windows 1 to 4. Produce your current drivers license and new I.D. ( in our case our cedulas). Within 10 minutes we signed for and received a “certificate” showing the change had been done in the main system.
2 Caught a taxi to Cosevi, La Uruca, went for a medical exam ( did not have to have our blood work done as our blood type was already on our old drivers license). Paid 15,000.00 colones each.
3. Went to Banco National ( right next door to Cosevi)and paid for our drivers license renewals – 10,000.00 colones each.
4. Went to the renewal office, produced our old licenses, the receipt from Banco National and the certificate from MOPT showing our ID change and waited 10 minutes max to have our new pictures taken, finger prints and sign on the dotted line. Sat and waited not even 4 minutes and was issued with my new license.
An absolute breeze and total time from leaving Grecia, to finale – 3 hours.
2 very important points to take note of though:-
1. Do not get into a non metered taxi and get ripped off. Our problem entirely.
2. A great pity that the staff at Cosevi are not given a lesson on how to take good photographs. I have to live with mine for the next 6 years. Not good. Perhaps you can ask to see your before they make it final.!
I hope this helps anyone out there who was unsure what to do.
When I lived in New York City on the floor right above ground level (gringos call it the second floor and Brits would call it the first floor or is the other way around?) on 72nd street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, the traffic noise 24 hours a day was horrendous… And yes! Those little silicone ear plugs were my saviour!
Because of security reasons we cannot use ear plugs. They do make a difference and having lived 100 meters from the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey for 5 years noise is not a new comer to my life but theses dogs go beyond belief. We checked on every level before we built our home in the Central Valley. All was wonderful for the 3 years and now. Somethings we have no control over such as future building or future renters in tiny obscure unused farm house.
Make this be the dog owners’ problem or the problem of the owner of the farm.

If the dogs continue to bark through the night, call them. If that doesn’t help, call back. And if that doesn’t help, call again. Once the owners’ sleep is as disturbed as yours, they’ll take some action.

My father taught me early in life that misery loves company.

Thanks for the advise but for love nor money can we get the owners name of telephone number. We stopped his car one morning whilst he was on his way for his morning inspection of the farm. Not the nicest of fellows though.

3 years ago I contacted Mr. Cohen to purchase 2 fridges, 1 cooker, 1 wall oven, 1 counter top cooker, 1 deep freeze, 1 washer and 1 dryer. Quite a good order in anyone’s books I would say. Well we are still waiting for him to report back to us. Rather late right?
If one wants to purchase numerous items it is much cheaper to hire transport, go to the free trade zone shops in Golfito, obtain a purchase order, stay the night in a hotel and next day purchase your items. If I am correct one can purchase US$2000.00 every 6 months.

We opened a bank checking account prior to becoming residents in Costa Rica and used our passport numbers for ID purposes. Our building manager was a German friend so he had signing powers but we used to transfer monies into his account when requested.

Unless you know your builder very very well and he is a non Costa Rican I would not give him signing powers. There have been too many scams in this country to take any chances. Our manager had accounts at the 3 building supply companies so I was able to check all the monies paid and goods ordered. Hope this helps.

A question are you registering a non trading corporation for your home or is it to be in your personal names? Hope this helps
