An unlocked iPhone OTHER THAN ONE THAT’S BEEN LINKED TO VERIZON should work in Costa Rica without any problems.

David – so if the unlocked iPhone 4s was EVER subscribed to Verizon back in the States, there is no way to make it work in CR? My daughter has a 4s (on the Verizon system) but wants to go back to Android and I was going to buy her 4s, but if it will not work here……

OK, so what about those of us that have a CR drivers license AND a immigration file number and we are still waiting for the folks at immigration to notify us that our application is approved?
They have told me several times that everything is complete, just waiting on the “resolution”.

No surprise! If the USA voted to give fresh milk to babies, CR would vote against it!

I went through this article again last night and I guess what is so upsetting to me (aside from the blatant errors and misstatements of fact contained in the article) is how was it ever allowed to be published as an ARTICLE on WLCR?

I could understand it if it had been posted on the Discussion Forum, where rants & raves (including mine) are the norm of the day, but this was a feature article and was placed in a prominent position by someone with “authority”, and I’m sure it discouraged many readers about life in Costa Rica.

Rather than post my long reply to her article, I decided this morning to just send it to her – does anyone know how to contact her?
Yes, it was on the main page and yes, it’s gone. You didn’t miss acthing.
I went to the main page and then to the “search” function and typed in “lipton” and found it.

You can also find it at http://www.PsychologyToday.com

She also has another not so friendly post on that site that demonstrates how unhappy she really is…. I think she needs a therapist!

Me thinks the good doctor has her facts (and possibly her undies) a bit twisted! I hope the books she has authored are more accurate than this article.

She states “I am supposed to get a cedula on December 6, and so in late January I can go back to San Jose for a driver’s license.” I have no idea how she comes up with that conclusion! As soon as she gets her cedula she can get her driver’s license.

It is a shame that she had this article published on WLCR.com and PsychologyToday.com before she got her facts straight!

I don’t mind her scaring off other “shrinks” but she may have discouraged some really good people at the same time.
As a monthly get away are trips to the coast very expensive. Staying in modest but nice motels. Not the highend ones.
which coast? atlantic or pacific, northern zone, central or southern? and no, it doesn’t have to be “very expensive”. it can be what you want it to be “modest but nice”.
if you are heading to papagayo or tamarindo or jaco or manuel antonio, it may be more difficult, but if you are willing to pick a less “touristy spot” you can find nice coastal rentals in cabinas, hotels or vacation rentals in the $50-$60/night range, some including breakfast!
my wife and I live in Samara, but we travel up and down the Nicoya peninsula in that price range and find great hosts and accommodations!
    PM me for more info!

Wow, Camby – you are a busy guy! In addition to that big case-load, this morning you were multi-tasking like crazy! Either that, or you have hired a staff of writers to make your posts on the various discussions. Do they get paid by the word, the # of posts or by the hour – if it is the latter, you only owe them for 2 hours today!

Here’s are the times I could find “the Camby staff” posting this morning on WLCR.

After THOUSANDS of people have lost their life’s saving, why exactly are these ‘people’ from Paragon now “off the hook?”

Skimming through it quickly it is also apparent that (in the Judge’s opinion) there was some shoddy legal work by the plaintiff’s attorney(s) in their oral arguments as well as written submissions to the court. Both are cited for dismissal relating to different parts of the suit.

    It’s a shame.

Yes, no doubt there needs to be a new, modern bridge – but this is the perfect example of “band aid surgery” that is so prevalent here. Not complaining because things get things get done when they need to get done out here in the boonies, like when our local bridges wash away and 3-4 days later we’re back in business – no environment engineers and reports, etc, – just a Bailey Bridge (and hopefully no 90 ton cranes)!

    UNBELIEVABLE!

    My only involvement was to

    (a) request an information package long ago after firsst hearing about the Paragon Ponzi Scheme (probably here on WLCR). it was quite the qlitzy package such that I can see how people got sucked in; and,

    (b) then follow the aftermath here through the various posts, comments and laments.

With the “justice system” in the US the way it is, I am not surprised, if indeed this is true!
So, until or unless you get a CR license, can you still legally drive with a foreign DL? if so, what are rules if anyone knows….
Camby – it’s pretty clear in costaricafinca’s post above –

    BUT,

because it appears that it may be some time before you revisit CR, you may want to make sure what the then current regulations are! They can change weekly.

Fortunately, my wife and I have our driver’s licenses and an appointment in 2 weeks to (hopefully) receive our cedulas, but man – this is one of the biggest cluster @*^)# that I have seen them create. And I don’t think it was unintentional or unintended.
They have been trying to find a mechanism to control perpetual tourist, and now they have it. With this new part of the law, they have just expanded their immigration enforcement division by adding every transito and traffic officer to their ranks!

Regarding the meeting with migracion to receive your cedula for pensionado temporary residency – if you have been to migracion for this purpose in the last 6 months or so, please send me a PM, I have a couple of questions about what to take (passport, pictures, other required documents?, etc.) and what to expect when we get there. – – Thanks
I read this , where it was posted ”Ivy (ARCR staffer) mentioned that COSEVI made a change this Monday that may affect everyone who doesn’t have a cedula.

People who don’t have their cedulas will no longer be allowed to obtain a CR driver’s license using only their passports. For those with Comprobante Requistos who are awaiting their cedulas and who don’t already have their CR driver’s license, they will need to leave the country every 90 days in order to “reset” their home-country driver’s licenses.

Those of us who are in the process of residency and who already have our CR driver’s licenses with our passport #s will not be affected”.
Most of us that live here took particular interest in the revised traffic fines in the new Traffic Law – but apparently there is also a provision that either went unpublished, little noticed or totally overlooked by those that make up Costa Rica’s media – and it can affect you even if you never get a ticket! I first heard of this on Friday from SamaraInfo Center. At first I thought it was wrong, but after a little research it turns out that her info (as usual) is correct, at least based on ACRC’s staff memeber Ivy.

In short, there is an interpretation by COSEVI that says that the new traffic law includes a provision that states if you don’t already have your Costa Rica driver’s license, you can not get one unless or until you have your residency approved (or you already have an approved, pending residency application (i.e. a “file number)).

And, as written above by the ARCR staff member, even if you have a residency file number but do not have a CR driver’s license, then you must leave CR every 90 days to “reset their home country driver’s license”.

As has been often discussed on the forum, people should know that if you overstay your 90 day visa and happen to get stopped by Transito –
    …..you will get a ticket,
…..new) you cannot leave the country until you pay the ticket (also new, they have now linked the COSEVI and Migracion computers, so they will stop you at the airport),
….because you have overstayed your visa, there are other possible penalties (financial, expulsion, restrictions on return, etc.),

The old law said that once you got a ticket from Transito after being here in excess of 90 days, the only way you could get a DL was to take a written test (in Spanish). I don’t know if that has changed or not.

This change will affect a lot of people – adversely! In essence, it places a new imposition on “perpetual tourist” and makes it more difficult (if not impossible) for them to get a CR DL – unless they have already applied for residency and have a file number.
