Three of the most consistent and best posters on the blog, and neither of them seems to have an ironclad answer – what does that say about the US?

I will call them for you, David. All I need is your SS#.

And Sprite – while I am at it I may as well check on your account as well. So Please send SS#.

No problemo!

I was seven months over, had no problem leaving and returned on a one way ticket – so I was 3 for 3!
Will you beso lucky, I can not say?
I have yet to hear of anyone having a problem after over- staying, especially after only after a few days. If they ask, just tell them you miscounted because of leap year!
Seriously, I have never heard of anyone staying past the 90 days, and I have been here for several years.

Good morning W41.
You are usually spot on with your replies, but in this case you are referring to the new corporate tax while I was asking about the now 2 year old luxury tax on high end residential properties,
They are both onnerous, and unfortunately I don’t believe the monies collected will ever get to the designated cause, but I don’t want other folks to get confused with the 2 separate taxes.
One affects everyone owning stock in a corporation, and the other affects only those owning high end residential real estate (calculated according to the governments formula).

You know, we have watched competing cell companies all over the States lease space to each other on both company-owned and privately leased cell towers. Notwithstanding this successful business model, ICE (in their monopolistic ignorance) decided that they could limit competition by forcing their “competitors” to build their own towers. The only things they accomplished was to abandon a source of income and to impose an obligation on the new companies to build new towers – and regrettably some of those new towers are unfortunately adjacent to nice properties or obstructing the view from nice properties.

We have 2 new towers here in Playa Samara that fit into these categories. One of them clearly falls into the concession area, but it is my understanding that the CR courts have determined that these cell towers are in “the public interest” and therefore not subject to the plan regulador or the maritime law.

It is indeed shameful!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, 2 friends were detained for several hours here in Samara last week during a check for illegals. They had their passports and entramite, but had been in country for more than 90 days. The explanation given to them was that even though you are “in process”, there is no assurance that you will be approved for residency. So if you are not approved and have been here more than 90 days, then you would be in the country illegally; hence, the need to leave every 90 days even while in process.
That is an explanation that doesn’t make sense.

I have an excellent attorney who should be up on the current state of the law. I will call her tomorrow and hopefully have an answer for you by tomorrow night.
Greetings W41 – what sayeth your attorney? Is the explanation starting to make more sense?
The problem with the “Residency en tramite” policy for not having to leave the Country to renew the Tourist Visa every 90 days while waiting for Residency to be granted, is that it is an unwritten policy of enforcement and not the law, nor an Immigration Directive. It has been followed for many years by most police and Immigration Officials. I’m not aware of any change to this unwritten policy of enforcement, but at the same time, it is at the discretion of the police, or Immigration Officials to apply it. Likewise, the Airlines are not able to rely on a Residency en tramite document to allow for a one way ticket to Costa Rica, only Residency which has been granted.
Watchdog, you sound like you know from where you come; therefore, I am prone to believe you although I don’t want to.
So if I am understanding what I think you said –
It is indeed the law that you must leave every 90 days (or whatever period granted on most recent stamp), whether “en tramite or not”, but that for “many years” officials have looked the other way and not enforced this part of the law, but if officials decide to enforce it, the law is on their side.

Be that as it may, please don’t tell the airlines!

I hope it is BS, but I heard it from 3 different people tonight that were told (at different airports, 2 in the US, 1 in Canada) that they needed round trip tickets even though they had their entramite with them and in hand.
Also, 2 friends were detained for several hours here in Samara last week during a check for illegals. They had their passports and entramite, but had been in country for more than 90 days. I’m flying out of SJO on Friday, and I have been here over 6 months, and my return ticket in 2 weeks is one way. So, I guess I’ll find out and when I do I’ll let you know.
I must agree with smekuly that seperaton of our discussion of U.S. politics might be better separated from our responses to those about living in Costa Rica if it is feasable.

I have other sites on which I discuss U.S. politics and economics and as these things affect us here I respond.

I am sure that those who come here for information are looking for direction and have little interest in the situation in the U.S. They are living in that mess and probably looking for escape rather than a rehash of our opinions.
Perfectly expressed – I wish we could convive “el Jeffe” Scott to expand the “rules” to exclude political bashing of US, European, Iranian, etc., politics (on either side).

My personal preference would be to extend the restriction to “gated communities” but we would loose Sprite, and although I seldom agree with him, I would hate to loose his perspective because it is great fodder for discussion, which is what this forum is supposed to be all about.

Even though we are at the political extremes, I would welcome Sprite into my home and enjoy his social company, share my home, my wine and my food – all he has to do is “buzz” at the gate and I’ll let him in!

And Sprite, in addition to the great song by the Beetles, please remember that everything points to Heaven being a “gated community”.

I did not “Reply With Quote” because Scott’s reply is so comprehensive and lengthy, but his reply is so demonstrative of the value of this website! If people want to take the time to RESEARCH their considerations BEFORE they become decisions, the information is here and available!

All they have to do is remove the emotion from their decisions and take the time to read, take the time to consider and take the evaluate the available information – it’s there for the taking, on this web site (in particular) and others as well (sorry Scott, your site is great but there are others that add to and reinforce what is available here).

Remove emotions, read, consider, evaluate, RESEARCH. Don’t jump into something you don’t understand and then whine or cry about it!

If you can find a Dos Pinos “ferria store” in your area, see if they have it or if they may know who does. I have found them to have a good supply of foods, vitamins and preventative meds for animals – domestic & farm.
Good luck and give her lota of love! Pets are great friends and I am confident that we all want the best for your’s!

The past differential in cost for tickets to LIR is for all the reasons detailed above.

The reduction of prices by othther airlines (especially from destinations in the northeast) is for one reason and one reason only – – JetBlue initiates non stop service NY to LIR tomorrow, with flights 4 days a week!

Now that they have LIR gate space and employees, I am hopeful they will add additional flights from other states, especially Florida.

If you fly in/out of Florida and would like to have them serve LIR, please go to their website and click on the “Speak Out” link and ask them to do so. If enough of us do it, maybe they will consider it.
