I have applied for my CR residency and have proof of my application. I am waiting for my application to be approved. I need to do a second border run in order to be able to continue driving my car on my California Driver’s License. Do I still need to show an airline ticket back to the US and $500 in cash at the Panama border? I did do that the first time I went to the Panama border, but it is a real pain in the neck to get a airplane ticket and then request a refund. Can’t I just show proof of my Residency Application at the Panama border?
Why not just obtain your Costa Rica drivers license?
I did this in 2008 while my residency was in lengthy process and never left again. I still have my CA drivers license in case I go back but the CR license is also valid in California.
Unfortunately, under the current traffic law you must have residency to apply for and receive a CR drivers license.
Yes, if you go across the Panamanian border but ‘no’
    if you head for Nicaragua.
It could take a year or more to receive your cedula, so be prepared to repeat this again…and again…
I think “Finca” is answering your questions:
“yes” you will need the onward travel ticket and cash at the border with Panama, and
“no” you will not need it at the border with Nicaragua.

In either case, Panama or Nicaragua, I have not experienced them accepting your application or expediente document as proof of anything.

    Good luck, and safe travels!

Unfortunately, most changes and/or updates to your account must be done in person, because new “signature cards” are usually required.

Just yesterday I went to BNCR to update my account from my passport as ID to my cedula. Only took 10 minutes but I did have to sign new card.

I had a copy of my wife’s passport and a copy of her cedula, but they said she must come in in person.

Also, I hope you are complying with the US FACTA law and reporting your account (IRS form 5471).

If you have all of that sitting in a checking account you could be earning some good interest if you desired. 7% +/- in a dollar savings CD and 12-14% in a colone CD at one of the “cooperatives”. Check out the rates and terms at Coopenae.

The bus from Tamarindo to Santa Cruz should be closer to one hour, then it is only 17km (11 miles) from Santa Cruz to Nicoya. Buses to Samara and Nosara leave every 30 minutes or so.

Then you have about 30-45 minutes to the turn off to Nosara just 6km outside of Samara. All of that journey will be on paved roads, and the bus will make frequest stops to pickup or drop off folks along the way.

The road to Nosara is in miserable shape, so that could take an hour or so for the 30 minute (normal) trip.
The bus service in CR is how this country moves everything.

Just keep your luggage with you and keep an eye on it. The trip will be part of your CR “experience” and you will recall it for years to come!!
My wife and I have Social Security income and are considering relocating to CR. We plan to arrive in Jan, ’04 and stay for about 3 months to “scope things out” and decide whether to stay and if so, where to settle. I plan to purchase a vehicle and keep it if we decide to stay and sell it if we do not. I plan to buy the car before we arrive and to spend in the $8,000 to $10,000 range for something reliable. I hope to find someone to look one over and give me an opinion as to condition. Some questions.
    1. With a 90 day temporary Visa, am I allowed to own a vehicle?
    2. If so, approximately what will insurance cost.
    3. I have read some about owning cars in corporations as apposed to individually. What does a corp cost and what is the advantage? I will consult an attorney for details but need some reliable general info please.
Hi Judy –
the ability to live on SS depends on how much that monthly stipend amounts to, where you intend to live and what lifestyle you want to maintain.

    answers:
yes, you can buy a vehicle upon arrival, but keep in mind that if/when you decide to leave you may not be able to sell it before your departure date unless you want to “dump” it at a used car lot. As far as I know (which may not be the entirety of the real situation) insurance is sold on an annual basis with payment available monthly, quarterly, or on a 6-month basis. The costs will be based on the value of the vehicle, the coverage you want (without “theft” you can save 35-40%), the deductible you select, and what amount you are willing to self insure,(under value the car). You can buy in either a corp or as an individual. Buying in a corp offers some degree of additional liability but not as much as in the past and the corp will cost you $400-$600 depending on the attorney you choose to use.

Let us know what part of CR you are interested in and you will get a lot of valuable information!

They may react, but I hardly agree that they “excel” at reacting. Positive results generally fail to follow the reaction.
So, here we are living in the Arenal area and I need a nice vacation on the coast. White sand beach and nothing to do (we have a little finca and there is always something to do). Maybe an all inclusive. Who has a suggestion?
You know, it’s hard to beat the white sand beaches along the west coast of Florida. If you are thinking “all inclusive” and not “the real Costa Rica” you might want to try Clearwater Beach, or Lido Key, or Destin – they are all beautiful and offer all of the maddening haste and confusion of an “all inclusive”.

Can you do it sooner than your designated period? My plates are so faded that I get stopped routinely and told I need to get new ones. Before going to RTV inspection last month I used a blue magic marker to “refresh” my plates. The guys there had good laugh at my artwork, but insisted I get new plates before next year’s inspection, But the designated replacement period for my plates ending in “6” is not until after next year’s required RTV inspection.
I’m curious as to whether those of you currently living in CR take the precaution of using insect repellant? I have mixed feelings about slathering chemicals all over my skin. I’m sure they do a decent job at repelling mosquitos but I’m sure there must be some effect on the wearer too, however small.
Yes, I use insect repellant and so do many of the people I know. Most bars and restaurants have it available for their clients upon request. Our area is not near as “buggy” as some other areas I have visited in CR, but at times they can be annoying.

We also take B vitamins that help you build up a resistance to the smaller insects.

And, a friend of mine has an iPhone app (“BugsAway”, I think) that she swears by. We were at a beach restaurant and the flies were annoying. She pulls out her iPhone, opens the app and sets it on the table. While she was telling me how effective it is, 2 flies landed on her phone!!

Anyway, here is a vote for repellent – now, if it only mixed well with Rhum!!!

Actually, I wasn’t being sarcastic but the comment about sitting around all day was uncalled for and an unjustified assumption so I apologize for that.
Thank you for your apology. Even though not all of us have “jobs”, most of us stay busy with household activities, community service activities and programs, volunteering, group activities etc.
However if you are that busy then I am puzzled as to why you were so surprised that I hadn’t posted any messages for a few days. Is it a surprise to learn that I might lead a busy life too?
OK, I have to inquire. Please do tell us what it is that you do when your busy life involves you doing it. I think you have to admit that based on the frequency of your WLCR participation in the short time since you have joined us, it may be difficult for some of us to understand how you can be so “busy”. Now, if you had said that you had been busy enjoying the long holiday weekend, that may have been more plausible, at least to me.

I have regularly been insulted by posters who include all kinds of faces as if that made the insults OK.
Now that is truly an interesting statement! “I have regularly been insulted by posters……”
Honestly, why do you feel that people are insulting you? And even more interesting, are they really insulting you or do you simple perceive their comments to be insults simply because they may disagree with you? Another interesting consideration is that the majority of them may indeed be intended as insults, and if so, why do you think that people would take the time and effort to do that? Is it at all possible that it may actually have something to do with you or your demeanor?

In you haste to respond sarcastically (which unfortunately is your norm) you failed to notice my happy face avatars I left for you.

And as far is my having NOTHING to do, you are wrong on all counts …..
