Axelgil, we too, have planted 1,050 young trees provided by ICE last year. Plus, the trees we have bought ourselves before that. This year we intend to plant more.
I encourage anyone to invest with one of the established orginizations that you mention.
Many, have set up ‘non-profit’ with the only intent of improving their own pockets.costaricafincaParticipantMaravilla added this link on an earlier post, and there are a couple of photo of the buildings.
http://news.aol.com/article/costa-rica-quake-death-toll-rises/299026costaricafincaParticipantThere was two more earthquakes yesterday, the strongest being 4.3. Numerous aftershocks are still occurring.
The road to La Paz is now accessible. Damage has occurred to the La Paz restaurant and other buildings.More info: http://insidecostarica.com/dailynews/2009/january/16/nac01.htm

costaricafincaParticipant¡Gracias!
costaricafincaParticipantWhy don’t you consider helping a community rebuild their lives after the earthquake? It is a more immediate need. Schools have been razed, along with equipment required to operate them.
costaricafincaParticipantWe heard that it was an immediate reaction that the restaurant collapsed/exploded, with no warning, so as you said, how/who was supposed to ‘provide them with food’?.
Maybe, when they think back on this awful experience, they will relish the fact they they survived with a tale to tell.costaricafincaParticipantThere was four 2-4.5 earthquakes in the same area last night/early this morning. One more death.
Maravilla, after looking at the photos on the link you provided, I felt shame for the tourists, who sat on their chairs as if they were at the beach. And read elsewhere that some complained, quote “‘(The hotel staff) told us we would get some food at 3 p.m., and then there was no food. … They told us we would get blankets when it got dark, then there were no blankets. … Then they told us the army was coming to pick us up in the morning, and all we had were news stations and photographers.’”
People all around them, had lost everything, including their loved ones and their livelihoods!

costaricafincaParticipantThe ‘group’ I am involved with eventually ‘pulled the plug’ on their non-profit charity status to benefit Costa Rica’ after 10 years. They have now changed their status due to the costs involved with both legal counsel and the near impossible task to please the Costa Rican banking/securities. We had on the board people who have been in the US and European banking industry for many years, and even they said ‘enough is enough’.
Yes, we still do fundraising and pick a ‘specialized’ party to help,i.e. schools which need refurbishing, but getting involved as a non-profit is going to cost, you, big time!costaricafincaParticipantI ‘think’ it was in Friday edition of the TicoTimes.net that company names were mentioned in regards to charging for transportation. Presently this site is down so I can’t find the link.
I do know that locals were forced to wait, until tourists were evacuated first!costaricafincaParticipantAlexgil, by no means, please do not think I feel this is a minor ‘earthquake! I feel awful for all of those have died, trapped and have lost their livelihoods.
I have been through other earthquakes here, but cannot imagine living through and experiencing first hand, what has happened with this recent one.
With reports I have heard of tourists being charged, it was because they didn’t want to wait their turn, since it was ‘woman, elderly & children first. But, it was still wrong!
It turns out, some neighbors 5Kl. down the road from us, still in Quanacaste. felt the earthquake.
And thank you for posting such an informative update.costaricafincaParticipantThe one in 1991 in Limon was much larger, at 7.4 with more people killed.
In Turrialba where we used to live there were and still are many structures still in disrepair.
There has been more over 6.0 than is on that list. We have experienced, more than a few here, including the one on Christmas Day, 2004, http://www.amcostarica.com/122503.htm
So far, 18 confirmed during the one with more deaths expected.
Lets hope for the best.costaricafincaParticipantAnother link, http://www.insidecostarica.com
According to info on this page, this was the worst in 150 years.costaricafincaParticipantUpdated info, reflects much more damage than originally thought. Many tourists trapped up at the La Paz hotel due to blocked roads and folk caught between landslides on a bus heading to the Caribbean. The media is reporting to expect more earthquakes/aftershocks today.
We are in Guanacaste, so never felt anything, this timecostaricafincaParticipantColinMIUS, you didn’t answer the question, in regards to if you have ever been to Costa Rica?
I have seen only a few RV’s in the 9 years we have lived here. And can you afford to risk the millions of dollars it will take to ‘set it up’?costaricafincaParticipantYou may have posted this info before, on this forum, but could you give us an ‘idea’ on where your residence is located?
