Not from personal experience, but have heard of this happening in the past, so you will have to supply an up-to-date report.
Acquaintances have been waiting for 2 years and as far as I know, have not been required to update their report.
Didn’t you mention that you had a problem when you first applied for Residency? Could it have something to do with that?

Dry, uncooked rice placed along the path of leaf cutter ants will supposedly help…but have known some to resort to using dynamite! I’ve seen them eat the leaves of an orange tree…
It is very difficult to rid you garden or property without resorting to a ‘poison’ such as Mirex.

To know for sure, you must ask your ‘realtor’ if they are a Permanent resident or have a work visa, and request they show your their cedula. On it, it will state ’Libre Condición’.

Even if he ”…have been professionally involved with real estate within Costa Rica since 2006″ doesn’t make him legal.

There seems to be many who have returned to the US for surgery that would have to be performed privately here, unless you want to wait 2-3 years.
If the premium is that low, you can’t afford not to pay it. Realize that not everyone who moves here, stay for the long term, for many different reasons.

Brett, when you get the comprabante or Resolución Firma meaning that you have been approved, and so you are no longer required to leave CR except to re-set your drivers license every 90 days or less, if you wish to continue driving, however, it can still take a year or more to get to the next step. Once you have signed up with CAJA and paid your premium, it can still take a month to get an appointment for your final visit to immigration to get fingerprinted before you get your cedula.
Note: you used to be finger printed prior to your application, but this seems to have recently changed so you may have already completed this step.

Snodad, just don’t depend/presume that your CAJA premium will be ‘$55 a month’ because if it is $1855, as you mention, unfortunately, it could be more than double…

Hope on your return everything work out for you.

A few weeks ago, between where we used to live and where we live now, 4 men dressed in police uniforms, arrived at a friends property saying they had just caught a teen stealing cattle and did he want to lay charges. He said ‘no’ and one of the ‘policemen’ immediately put a gun to his older teens head. They tied them up, broke open a gun cabinet took the firearms …that he had legally purchased after a previous ‘break in’…and ammo and all the electronics in the home and fled, leaving the family, unable to get loose, for 20 hours.
The neighbors later told him ’we thought something looked suspicious' but they did nothing to check on the family.

It was reported that school staff foiled an abduction attempt on Monday morning, involving a specific 9 year old child, in Escazú, by a man claiming he was her father.

It isn’t often we hear of attempts like this, thank goodness.

Ongoing drought conditions continue to plague Guanacaste with 9 hotels threatening to close

Although I am a ex-pat Brit, a Canadian citizen and a long time resident of Costa Rica I, too, give thanks to anyone who serves their country as I did too, although in a small way.

A few years ago when the economy was doing well the Do-It Center was always bringing in new inventory, with the whole back area, kept full of nice items. Now, the back area sits empty…
Personally I would say, head for an Alis store located throughout ‘town’ and even ‘Pequeno Mundo’ which also offers some nice and inexpensive decor.

Either Do-It Center or take the time and go to shopping areas around San Jose, where the selection is much better.

Living here legally requires residency and although you can ‘manage’ a business you can’t physically work until you are Permanent resident which takes approx 5 years. It is very important for you to be able to speak Spanish if you intend to own a business as there can be an unbelievable amount of red tape.

Now, it is mandatory to be affiliated with the social healthcare system and being under 55 means your premium could be quite high depending on what residency status you apply for.

Both places are quite nice and are ‘high’ tourist areas and there are many great restaurants already located in the areas. Friends living in Quepos tell me many businesses there have recently closed.

You really would be advised to visit first.
