Scara – please post what you discover on current freight forwarding. I’ve seen a post on another board from someone who apparently uses freight forwarding regularly, with CargaTica for speed and Transportes a Costa Rica for slower but cheaper shipments. I haven’t found references to the second.

Are there any known freight forwarders to investigate? The only one I’ve seen mentioned was CargaTica, in a thread on another forum. Does anyone have personal experience or suggestions using them or others?

When sending a few boxes of “essentials” for life in the months (or years if you’re building) before the container can be shipped, a freight forwarder at 15-20 cents a pound in the weekly container sounds better than DHL, FedEx, etc.

The “lower than these proposed increased levels” will also depend upon the implementation. If the Rentista $5K/mo requirement is still per person as it is today, that’s $10k/mo or $120K/yr for a couple. The current five year ($60k/120k) requirement is rolled into a single year requirement. I’d guess not many couples have or spend $120k in the U.K., U.S., or Canada in retirement.

If the legislation actually passes, that means consciously evicting (I assume) a huge percentage of Rentistas not to mention Pensionados. So I’d hope you’re right Scott. I’ve seen other legislation arise and go poof, but the very existence of this one seems to indicate an anti-resident sentiment.

Thank you Sprite. I understand frustration and finger pointing exist on all sides. Even friends and family have strongly held, differing beliefs. Fortunately, mine tend to make their arguments with supported facts, avoiding generalities and name-calling, or they agree to disagree. As you say, we shouldn’t have a problem talking to each other. Thanks for clarifying.

Glad I could give a couple of vehement Democrats a target for their “vitriolic U.S. Bashing” and “Rabid personal attacks on (I guess Republican) political parties”.

I see that “rabid personal attacks” was a pretty good description.

Andy, you’ve undoubtedly learned, the most common methods of legally residing in Costa Rica are as Pensionado (retiree w/pension of $600/mo or more) and Rentista (w/funds equivalent to $1000/mo per adult, $500 per child for a period of five years). With either of these you are not allowed to work, which doesn’t seem to match your question. Processing on these, assuming no problems, takes a year or more.

There is a vanishingly small possibility of getting a work permit. Small because your work expectations are in fields that Ticos can and do work. You would be taking a Tico’s opportunity.

If you are able to start a business, you can hire Ticos to work it, but you cannot perform any function other than manage it. The return on businesses is low, just as the living costs are low.

There is no restriction on being a Rentista and working online for a company outside C.R., as long as it doesn’t include doing business in C.R. That also doesn’t seem to fit your criteria.

So this long reply was to give you more insight rather than just tell you it didn’t look promising based upon the expectations in your original post.

And since it is the rainy season, take an umbrella, raincoat, poncho, etc. and just enjoy the country and its wonderful people. I’d suggest activities such as La Paz (Waterfall Gardens) near Vara Blanca (north of Alajuela) as an all-day trip. They have monkeys, orchids, butterfly and snake enclosures, a traditional Tico farmhouse, frog house…. lots to fill a day (particularly with camera.)
We just enjoy the rainy time with friends and a good book.

Nope. It probably won’t work for Immigration unless it has specific wording that says that:
    1. You’ll receive the required amount (or greater)
    2. It is guaranteed for life (Pensionado) or 5 yr. (Rentista)
    3. If a change occurs they will alert Immigration in C.R.
    4. Signed by an executive (mgr or higher)
    5. It is notarized and authenticated (2 separate steps)

The good news is that others have gotten an acceptable letter, and I hope they’ll post.
