Well here is the issue:
My father in law only has a few thousand dollars to invest. My wife and mother-in-law know that if he has the money “laying around” he will spend it on “luxuries” like a new fishing boat, television, etc.. Let’s take into consideration that they are of humble means, but not poor, just average ticos, financially speaking. That being said my mother-in-law wants to put it into something that so that he cannot spend it for sometime i.e. a CD. I was just wondering if the banks there have anything like that.cp1436Memberdo you know what company your neighbor went with to build their cabin?
cp1436MemberMy wife (who is Costa Rican) and I use a company based out of North Carolina and New Jersey called Transportes a Costa Rica to ship to her family in CR. This company picks up boxes at locations all over the Northeast and Southeast (we live near Nashville), and guarantees delivery to your doorstep in CR. You may try them to see if they come to your sister’s area. 1-866-730-1776
-Chriscp1436MemberWow, any specifics on why you chose not to represent them?
cp1436MemberThanks, Scott!! Once again your on the ball.
I’ve looked at the developments. In particular, do you know of any in the “zona norte” near the Arenal, Tilaran, Ciudad Quesada?cp1436MemberI think that “tuanis” is the Spanish derivative of the English phrase “too nice”..
cp1436MemberI am still a few (20+) years from retirement, but it was something that I had in mind. My wife and I have got some land between Ciudad Quesada and La Fortuna which I thought would be a pretty good location.
I think that to be successful it’d have to appeal also to the tico palette as well as the “extranjero’s”. I find that the taste of Barbecue, in particular the sweet tomato based sauce, is not appealing to Ticos. My wife, who is a tica, and her family do not like barbecue sauce. They claim that tico’s do not like sweet flavors mixed with salty flavors (now explain to me why they can eat tons of sweet platano with sour cream?).
cp1436MemberAre there any good southern style barbecue restaraunts in CR?
cp1436MemberThe little “barrel” type charcoal smokers do amazingly well and they are really inexpensive. That’s what I have now, and It’s perfect for a medium-sized shoulder or a couple of racks of ribs, but if your looking to throw a big fiesta they are small. I know Scott mentioned using coffee wood (which I assume can be found in abundance), but has anyone else tried using any other types of wood. I find that wood from fruit trees works well here (i.e. cherry, apple, peach), how about guava or lemon?
cp1436MemberScott, sorry I was not more specific about size. We were looking at plans for an indirect heat smoker that uses 2 old propane tanks (one large for cooking, one small for the fire box), so size would be in diameter(inches). The plans we have call for one tank 20″ in diameter which is big enough to smoke a whole hog (a little big for me), so were looking for one about 14″-16″. I’m waiting for my father-in-law to determine a price. I know that here the material is inexpensive but the labor is what is so expensive. If you want I could send some photos of what the final product should look like.
cp1436MemberWhat size smoker would you be interested in? I’m sending him some more plans for a smoker made from old propane tanks. I like design of this one better.
cp1436MemberI wouldn’t say that I am a normal “student”. I am a 30 something grad student. I do think it would be a great “base of operations” for the Central Valley (Poas, Sarchi, etc.), much, much better than San Jose. You probably want to move elsewhere if you plan on exploring other areas more remote. I am sure that they would take care of your things if you leave them there during your treks. Tell them a student of Doug from TN recommended them.
cp1436MemberGreat Place! I have stayed there on numerous trips, after a reccomendation by my professor. It is located in a quiet neighborhood away from Central Heredia, but still within walking distance. It is run by a nice Chinese family. Nidia is wonderful and will take great care of you. Ask for the room by the office, you can sit on the patio and sip a cold one.
cp1436MemberScott, Thanks for your reply.
My wife is infact a Tica, and I lived in the area for about 1 year in total in the last 3 years while working. At that time I was not looking into purchasing land, but my wife is now wanting to purchase. I had previously started to do just as you have suggested.1. My father in law has found some land near Santa Rita for a good price and has sent me photos.
2. We are positive that we want to purchase in the general area near Florencia, Platanar, Santa Clara and Javillos.
3. Being married to a Tica and having lived there who I am accustomed to the food, culture, and location.
4. This I have yet to start this, I have a personal friend who is a judge, is this a process that he may be able to do?
5. I’m sure that cash talks louder right?
In general I would be curious as if anyone has purchased land (w/ or w/o casa) in this general area, and if so what the costs were.
