I’m now living in the mountains around San Isidro de General. In another year, I might consider building a home.
Does anyone’s now a builder in this area to recommend? Or to avoid?
critterhillMemberI have been very happy with Kolbi. As you are leaving the airport, you can stop by their desk and get a new SIM card and buy some minutes. You can add minutes at any place with the Kolbi sign across the country………and they are everywhere. The cost of local calls is 1.5 cents/minute. You can also make international calls but I can’t remember the cost as we use FaceTime.
Very easy to use.
critterhillMemberI agree with those who advise renting a car with a Garmin in hand and just explore. I’m moving down in 3 weeks after 8 or 9 trips in 4 years. I’m renting a house in an area I found by making a booking mistake.
I also recommend that the two of you sit down and discuss your priorities. What kind of climate? View? Medical access? Once you establish YOUR priorities, finding your home area will be so much easier.
Good luck and have fun exploring.
October 7, 2013 at 11:54 pm in reply to: Do I Pay The ObamaCare Penalty Living in Costa Rica? #169924critterhillMemberI haven’t been checking this site much lately because I just hate the petty, personal BS. So I see not much has changed in the past few months………
critterhillMemberThanks so much, Barbara Ann.
I needed this list the past month. I just returned from CR yesterday. This list has been pasted and saved for reference for our next trip.
critterhillMemberLove the Kim Che. Didn’t know that about the odor, but it makes sense. Too much garlic consumption = smeeeeeeelly.
David, if you have access to some fresh goat’s milk, you can make some kefir.

critterhillMemberI love the Toucan map as well.
critterhillMemberFor clarification purposes, are you looking for books on the history of Costa Rica? Retiring and living in Costa Rica?
Try Amazon as they have a book for any and every subject that interests you. And it goes without saying that just being here in different parts of the country is an education few books can provide.
critterhillMemberWhat am I missing here about all the U. S. citizens who abhor socialism yet are supposedly getting a free medical ride in Costa Rica? The expats I’ve talked to are all paying for some type of private insurance just as we plan to do. So how is that being a parasite on a socialist benefit?
critterhillMemberThank you, Waggoner.
critterhillMemberThanks, costaricafinca. I’ll check them out. We’re coming down next year and I’m trying to get all my ducks in a row.
critterhillMemberThanks! Farmer’s markets are “must do” on our list when we are visiting an area. I’ve heard this one is an excellent market and we can’t wait to check it out.
critterhillMemberWhat is INS and how can I contact them? I currently live in the U.S.
critterhillMemberIf you have AT&T service, here’s a link about unlocking your iPhone. It you don’t use A&T&, I would recommend contacting your carrier.
critterhillMemberkwhite1, you are absolutely correct. It’s sad that it takes such tragedies to remind us of what’s really important in our lives.
I am so sorry for his tremendous loss.
