Thanks to you all! Liz & I visited most of the shops you folks recommended, and now my credit card hurts. 🙂

Seriously, the car was pretty much loaded on the way back to Playa Hermosa and we had a good time in Escazu. We found a little ’boutique’ hotel called Out of Bounds that we both recommend. Almost directly across the road is the Taj Mahal, a a really fine Indian restaurant. We ordered ‘medium’ spice, which is’definitely ‘mild’to the Canadian palate. But great food and lots of it. Go there hungry.
I will not wish my life away but, that said, I can scarcely wait to retire in Costa Rica.

[quote=”Scott”]Would love to hear our VIP Member opinions on the recent letter I received from a retired U.S. citizen now very happily living in Costa Rica…

A couple of things come to mind…
Yes, some people are negative or lazy, but not that many. Culture Shock, however, is very common and manifests itself in largely negative attitudes. Been there, done that, and I wish it on everyone. It’s a very forceful way to learn that the rest of the world does NOT think like oneself. They don’t teach you that in school or at political rallies.

Even the Tico’s get frustrated with the lack of care encountered in both private & public enterprises, and so they should. There is no excuse for ignoring the people who pay your wages. It’s hot and humid so, sure, move slow. There are a myriad of government stamps, get used to it. But at least pretend you are interested in the person shelling out the Colones. Like it or not, the younger and educated generation of Tico’s will tend that way, too.

Now, the good part of inefficiency: employment. It may be “under-employment”, but better that than no job at all. Unemployment drives civil unrest and crime. So, somewhere there is a balance.. and it will likely still drive some Gringo’s a bit stir crazy. So grab a book/Kindle/Nook and have a read while you wait. 😀
