Actually, iodine, among other micronutrients, is deficient in the typical Costa Rican diet as it is in the American diet. Adding a trace amount of iodine to a commonly consumed foodstuff like salt can prevent the very diet-related problems that Pharg outlined above.
This is the same basic rationale as that for adding iron, vitamins A and D, and folic acid to milk. There are few or no arguments against these inclusions and the arguments in favor of them are compelling. Folic acid, for example, is known to prevent spinal column birth defects (can you say “spina bifida”).
DavidCMurrayParticipantWell, they’ve added it because iodine is missing in the Costa Rican diet, as it is in many places and it’s preventive of depression and hypothyroidism, as Pharg has already pointed out.
The iron, which is added to milk and some other products is there to replace that lost through menstruation. Unlike iodine, it is closely associated with cardiac disease in males and post menopausal women.

There’s no need for any reservoir or holding tank. And by the time it reaches your home,it will have done its antibacterial job and be dissipated into the air as it flows out of the faucet.
DavidCMurrayParticipantdavidd, you promised . . . “being that David Murray is now forum moderator I must bid you all farewell . . .”

oh, david, did you really ever once agree with me? I must’ve missed that post. we must have been talking about the weather or something really innocuous. jajaja
It has been a very long time, maravilla, you’re right. Seems like it had something to do with the North Pole being at the top of the map, but it’s been so long I can’t remember.
Oh! and speaking of the North Pole, Merry Christmas to you and everyone here.

How recent is your information, maravilla?
DavidCMurrayParticipant
Left or right, some of us came to Costa Rica to escape the U.S. political dog-and-pony show. Pura Vida.
Ain’t that the truth!
DavidCMurrayParticipantYou are overly kind, Scott.

Good Grief! Maravilla and I have the same opinion??? That is just too odd.
Now, now, Victoria, don’t take it so hard. That happened to me once, too, and I got over it.
DavidCMurrayParticipantMarcia and I got our license numbers changed to our cedula numbers at the driver’s license office in San Ramon in October. Despite speaking only pidgin Spanish and without any sweet talking, the process went perfectly smoothly.
DavidCMurrayParticipant
Well Ladies and gentlemen
being that David Murray is now forum moderator I must bid you all farewell and wish you all a merry Christmas.
Having Him as forum moderator reminds me of a cross between nancy pelosi and Barney frank

For those who may not know, I have been Scott’s assistant moderator since davidd was in short pants. Prior to that assignment, I began moderating online forums in the mid-1980s.
As for the comparison to Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank, I take that for the compliment I know davidd intended.
DavidCMurrayParticipantWell, Amazon sells ’em and Mike Rappaport’ll import and deliver it for you.

December 21, 2012 at 6:01 pm in reply to: Wal-Mart: How a retail giant fueled growth with bribes #173583DavidCMurrayParticipantIn Costa Rica’s Napoleonic legal system, every infraction and the associated penalty is defined to the nth degree. There is no provision for paying a traffic fine “on the spot”, so to do so is to participate in bribery.
I once had a Transito officer offer to let me pay the fine I rightfully owed on the spot for c10,000. I politely explained (lied, actually) that I didn’t have the cash, so he’d just have to issue the ticket which he did — for c5,000.
You may be solicited for a bribe, but you don’t have to participate.
