Sweikert
I know you love to waste time on your employers dime so here is a cool game for you to enjoy
daviddMembersweikert925
That is not the case here at all.. just agree with everyone.. everyone here that lives here has added many helpful real life situations and understand that many times there is a big difference between..
what is supposed to happen and what actually happens.. and what is the acceptable behavior within those boundaries.
It amazes me how people still.. I dont know.. be so naive.. for lack of a better word with regards to issues like government etc.
I don’t quite understand it.. this bubble like mentality.
I can only assume that many people lack the ability to see things for what they are instead they see things how they wish them to be and unless an outside force comes and slaps them on the head.. they will never be able to see
david
PS. by the way.. this board is full of fine people and has been here for many years.. so it will be still around when and if you will break out of your comfort zone and make a move. although I doubt it.

Wow, you got snubbed by the owner, moderator, and general guru of the site…..didn’t win any points there mate.
Unlike you (apparently), I don’t post comments here with the intention of winning points with Scott.
You will not be taken seriously until you have a PO box other than Chicago.
I doubt my current place of residence has anything to do with it. The real rules here are “agree with the hard right wing views we express or risk being ridiculed and abused”. Once I arrive in CR and continue to post my opinions (if this message board is still in business) you’ll no doubt find some new reason why my views are worthless. The only views you take seriously are the ones that are 100% in agreement with your own.
[Scott, you and others who live in CR have much more knowledge about CR and I have NEVER said anything to contradict that. Never. But one thing I’m pretty sure your knowledge about CR doesn’t allow you to decide is where I will or won’t be happy. That comment was pretty arrogant. For someone who continually obsesses about freedom you seem awfully quick to deny me the freedom to make that decision for myself.]
I don’t suppose we’ll ever know what was on Scott’s mind since he considers it beneath him to engage in any further discussion with someone who has the nerve to have a different point of view. But I would love to know why, with all the advantages he has – wealth, health, a loving family, a successful business and a fantastic home in one of the most beautiful places on earth he got up one day and decided “Today the thing that most urgently needs my attention is to post a rant on a message board (which is supposed to be all about living in Costa Rica) about what is printed on page 3 of my passport” – something which has been appearing on British passports since at least 1951.
daviddMember
Yes! You certainly can pay directly into the municipality’s bank account but it ‘may’ depend on the municipality
Supposedly collection of all forms of taxes is going to be a priority for this next administration so make sure you are up to date.
Scott
100% correct on that one Scott.. since politicians only path they ever take is make new taxes up.. you can be sure we will have new ones..
i am just about finished of getting rid of all my S.A. here.. and will wind up with only 1..( I had 6 ) and I will only have 1 bank account here in this country with monthly expenses only..
daviddMember
Does anyone know if house taxes can be paid at the bank or do you have to go to the governing municipality to pay it?
I know you can pay your corporation taxes at the bank but was wondering about the house taxes. Thanks for for the response in advance!
chuckrobin
personally I go in person to the municipality and pay in person.. and always keep your receipts.
here is an inside tip.. since I live here fulltime π
every 5 years.. the municipality will send a inspector or perrito to make a new valuation on your property and house..
if you keep an eye out and make sure you go and do this yourself.. you will be able to get the form and submit your own valuation increase..
which obvious will be lower than thiers :wink::wink::wink: and they accept it :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
keep in mind costa rica does not follow any normal type of small increases.. you know like 1 or 2 % they always do it in chunks.. which may give you a slight heart beat irregularity 8)8)
daviddMembersweikert
I will have to disagree with you on that one..boy you really reveal your inner beliefs with some of your statements
you actually scare me..

And we are forced to pay for the privilege of applying for and receiving a passport….
What you are paying for is the application processing, not the thing itself. Carrying a nation’s passport is a privilege, not a right. A right can’t be revoked, a privilege can.
To answer the initial question you posed in starting this thread, if you do something that prompts the UK government to revoke your passport, your freedom may be restricted in much more serious ways than the loss of that passport. So no, you don’t have the freedom to behave badly and never did.
daviddMemberSweikert
spoken like a true sheeple π
congratulations..
David
All legal credentials issued by government agencies can be revoked at the discretion of the issuer – medical licenses, law licenses, drivers licenses, dog licenses….and passports.
Why does that come as such a surprise to anyone?
As for being investigated to make sure you have paid all the taxes you owe if you should decide to renounce your citizenship, that’s fine with me. It’s time the government went after these greedy freeloading tax cheats that have evaded paying what they owe.
daviddMember
Amazing eh?
And we are forced to pay for the privilege of applying for and receiving a passport….
truly amazing .. but Scott.. the U.S. has a leg up on you Brits..
each new passport also carries a RF chip..
we not only are forced to pay for passport.. but we also have to pay to renounce citizenship when that day comes.
I wonder if the U.S. is actually the only country that one has to pay to renouce citizenship
now here is a good question for Swiekert :?::?::?:

Hurling insults at you is a little dramatic do you think???
:shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock:
I have already given you my honest assessment to you privately .. 8)8)8)
you have to be open minded enough to at least admit that you sometimes are a bit presumptuous in your dealings with people here.
I come back to this forum to see who is sweikert engaging with next..
the endless debates..
I am surprised you are not in politics… you would do well.
[If the topic under discussion is “What is the plot of Hamlet?” then Cliff’s Notes would actually be a better source of information.]
If you don’t think my comments are worthwhile then you are perfectly free to ignore them. But one of us posted a comment that actually concerned the topic under discussion and one of us posted a comment purely to take a potshot at the other – so who is lecturing whom?
You seem to be following the pattern of another regular who does nothing here lately except to wait for a post of mine and then hurl another insult at me. (He is obviously obsessed with me, and some private comments he sent me when I first joined explain why, but tact forbids that I say anything more).
You are perfectly welcome to post comments on any topic – including detailing my supposed shortcomings – but I suspect the people who read this board for useful information about Costa Rica might prefer some of that firsthand knowledge that you have gained from living there instead. I know I would.
daviddMemberanother one bites the dust

I wonder how many economic hits costa rica can take before we start seeing some action??
there will be a large influx of higher educated costa ricans in the marketplace..
again.. sad for those that depend living here.
I met a young tico that spoke perfect english and is in the tech industry he works from home and builds websites for clients outside of costa rica..
they pay him in dollars and he converst to colones.. no permits.. no taxes..
I say he is a smart young man
daviddMemberDoug
I cannot say I am that far from agreeing with what your saying..
although I dont think Costa Rica is over by any stretch of imagination.
at least in our lifetimes. the great thing about this country is that its small.. and because of that 1 person can make a difference as opposed to a large country
people here are more awake than the U.S. so they will respond when its gets to that point alot quicker.
successful Ticos do exist here and they know their shit that’s for sure.
what your referring to is the working population, the ones that are semi educated and working for some corporate company here.
you say in your tag heading for chile
share with use some of your findings because chile has been on my radar
thanks
With the labor laws here only an idiot would set up shop.
Once Intel goes, the rest will follow. Coffee is dying . Bananas now have huge problems. The law is a joke. The meatheads want more taxes(from furrnerz) since they have no way to enforce the existing tax laws.
We’ll see how the new pres reacts but I doubt it’s possible to change anything. He’ll throw proposals and they’ll be shelved. Like the poisoned banana workers waiting for a 3 page case to be looked at for 11 years. Costa Rica is over. They BEGGED for it.
A sane society would walk around with a machete and protect tourists visiting his country, hoping for many more to come. The opposite is fact here.Take advantage and hope another dummy shows up tomorrow. If not ? Pura Vida. Sell grannys wedding ring. She doesn’t need it. Grandpa died years ago.
Ticos on all levels can’t handle success of any sort, from monetary gains to a simple name tag that says “assistant to the assistants assistant”, the abuse takes off like a rocket.
They need to go back to dirt floors and no windows or electric(or perfume or iPhones). Poco a poco. It’s coming.
daviddMember
Great Info. Thx.
here is a little first hand REAL LIFE experience.. not some internet search info π
if you have not moved here you will have to re evaluate many of your assumptions and ideas because they are very different than back in the U.S.
for example. I originally always had certain kinds of cars in the U.S. so of course when i first moved here I learned first hand the difference between owning a car here and owning one back in the U.S.
Riteve for example is one big giant pain in the ass here as opposed to getting a car inspected back in the U.S.
also having parts easily available.. otherwise your a prisoner of the dealership where the car is sold and they RIP you OFF>> big Time
The roads here are also NOT like back in the U.S. pot holes and such can do damage to a car that is already 50% more expensive. I had a nice sport car porche that cost me alot of money from damages from driving the streets here.
then the ease of selling the car in the future.. you spent all this money to find out there is no market for your car so it takes you a long time and dropping the price until you move it..
fast forward I now drive a Toyota suv used.. where there is always a market and after market parts are available.
I just sold my car within 30 days and bought a newer model.
always trying to stay within 3 -4 years from new as I find this to be the sweet spot for me personally.. then I keep it 2 -3 years and I sell.
just a few nuggets of experience.. your mileage may vary π
I almost forget gas prices here are roughly $5 -6 per gallon.. which can add up real fast..
I also also forgot.. Transit Tickets.. if you get a ticket here are one of the MOST EXPENSIVE in the WORLD:!::!::!::!:
its expensive to drive here in costa rica
daviddMember
Any way to get an “approximate” idea on what the cost of buying an Audi A4 would be? I know there must be an Audi dealer in SJ since I remember 4 or 5 years ago while walking through Multi-Plaza there was an Audi showroom in the mall. “Average” cost here in US is around $35K (I stress “average”). I’m mainly interested in determining whether the same type of vehicle purchased locally would be 10% more….20% more…30% more…etc. Thank You.
Bogino
Cars here average 40 to 60 % more than the U.S.
you can get an idea here http://crautos.com/usados/economicos-usearch2.cfm?p=1
these are actual cars for sale.. not some article explaining theory

my friend just moved out of Belize for many of the same reasons you stated. Belize looks great on the surface but they have lots of issues.. and the problem is that there is no middle class there so your either a rich gringo.. or dirt poor.
you can’t blend in..if that makes any sense.
you should read up on http://money.cnn.com/2014/01/08/technology/john-mcafee/
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tag/john-mcafee
pretty wild :D:D
Costa Rica is changing also my friend.. if you are able to NOT need to do any kind of business here then its a viable option..
you need to minimize your footprint here with regards to engaging with any bureaucratic agency here.. and live life.. its great.. but in 10 years this may change..
since your in your diligence stage.. look at other options also..
Too many Americans that are looking to leave the U.S. for some reason Costa Rica is always an option for them.. which causes its own issues..
god help us if Swriekert actually moves here LOL
just kidding Sweikert π
daviddMemberaguirrewar
I know that feeling.. my tica wife is the same way.. except I am the one that provider her very comfortable lifestyle.. so she will go where the money goes π
these incompetent and corrupt politicians are babies compared to the U.S. but incompetent and corrupt nevertheless .
here is a very interesting video
http://www.caseyresearch.com/lg/meltdown-video
keep in mind that doom and gloom is these guys business model.. but this still does not diminish the validity of the content..
notice the Australian guy who saw the writing on the wall and made choices before the masses
The rising costs of Costa Rica and doing business in Costa Rica are going to cause more problems and less investment from expats and business.
not only that … there is more
the level of corruption since 8-10 years ago have saddled this country with a HUGE debt. The salaries and bloated workforce in the Gov. (un Diputado) makes 5 million colones a month, then add ICE, CONAVI, RECOPE, CCSS and the rest of the agencies and you get the picture.
and YES, Panama and Ecuador are looking more attractive than CR by a long shot
unfortunately I am married to a TICA and she isn’t moving ANYWERE else π
daviddMemberwhat you say is FACTS!!! that are occurring in today’s environment. NOT some silly report from some silly government agency telling you how wonderful things are going etc..
ICE is a perfect example of this..
I would not place any hope of any political figure to reverse any of this..
if anything they focus on legacy items.. things that in thier mind will make them legends..
all of these guys use the same playbook.. is to take from the productive and give to the unproductive
pure and simple.
and how they do this is thru taxation.
and what will get better… is the way they can create and ENFORCE taxation
the S.A. corp tax was a nice milker for them.. look for more of these and they will use services that you already pay for to collect ..like gas, and communications..
when the day comes that some government official starts to talk about creating a program that will give poor people cell phones.. and we will pay it thru our cell phones
I am packing!!! :P:P:P:P
The rising costs of Costa Rica and doing business in Costa Rica are going to cause more problems and less investment from expats and business.
Five years into our development project we are still spinning wheels because of the complexity and ever changing rules regarding development.
We now are saddled with rising property taxes, luxury taxes, corporation taxes and the insane banking rules that make it almost impossible to transfer the large sums of money that it takes to build.
More and more folks I talk to in regards to investing or retiring to Costa Rica are saying they are going to Panama or Ecuador.
Hopefully Solis can reverse or at least slow down some of these trends.
