I only have one question! I pay the new corporate tax, and the property luxury tax, on two properties; in Guanacaste. Where the hell is the money going! I have friends who relocated from Costa Rica to Panama, who constantly send me their sympathies!
yep

it’s that double tax..actually in your case your paying taxes 3times.

    corporate tax
    normal property tax
    and the luxury tax :D:D:D:D:D

I am proud of the progress costa rica achieved on relation to this taxation.

all these new taxes.. and everything stays the same 😀
I’m no nutritionist but can confirm one thing…

I have always eaten a huge amount of raw salad as part of my diet every single day but in late November I gave up all animal protein – all pork, chicken, beef, cheese and all dairy products and I gave up eating lamb which I adore…

I still cook the other foods for guests etc., but I am now only eating fish for protein and my grocery bill for December was half of what it normally is ….

    Scott

PS. For New Year I also gave up all alcohol and cigars so this could be interesting…
scott

I can understand giving up meats and alcohol. BUT cigars???

how many cigars do you smoke???

I smoke maybe 2 or 3 a week and this is when it’s optimal.

I enjoy a good cigar in an atmosphere of close friends and bonding.

so curious as to your decision in this
I think this post has to do with what is the reality of living in CR and what is the fantasy???

You want to sell something – appeal to peoples fantasies of Costa Rica. You want to maintain your personal honesty and actually be of service to other. Tell you personal experience.

The truth is your personal experience. Outside of mathematics, there is no absolute truth. None.

One and one always make two. That is absolute truth.

Everything else is a lighter or darker shade of grey.

As a man or woman you do your best with sincere intentions. if you trample people’s illusions, their higher dreams, you will be demonized, no matter that you are trying to protect them.

They think you are telling them their dream is a lie. Even it it is, its their dream and they protect it viciously.

That is why the guy was ate by the lion.

His dream, his story, was greater than reality (lions are dangerous and you must be cautious (just like Costa Rica).

People do not like you messing with their fantasies.

Great sales people are loved. Why else do you think they can con people into giving them thousands of dollars. They are loved because they speak sweetly and tell you what you want to hear. They play to people sense of rightness, to their ego, their sense of knowing best, their superiority.

Be a straight shooter and tell what they need to hear and you are practically hated. Why, because you made their dream less, inferior.. If someone made the guys dream inferior by saying “watch out for that lion,” he probably would have said, “Your crazy, that lion is not dangerous, look at it! Does that little kitty look dangerous to you?”

    So go figure.

It falls into the “no good deed goes unpunished” category.

People don’t want the truth. They want to hear what they want to hear.

You play to that and you make a sale or a con.

You play with a sense of personal honesty you lose money when it comes to telling your experience (truth) to others that are so sold on their own stories of what they want to experience, because your truth violates their hopes, their illusions and you are the bad guy for doing so…

The question of truth is one thing,

The question of who wants to hear it is another.

Yet still there is the question of who deserves to hear the truth.

The more I learn about human nature the less I believe that there are many that deserve the truth.

It’s like casting pearls to swines…

When it comes to Costa Rica, most don’t deserve the truth… Why, because they are not interested in it. You tell them the truth and they dismiss it and go right on believing their comfortable story, there illusions that fits their world.

Why do you think people are continually ripped off here?? They hear what fits their truth and that is all it takes…

Like in the video Scott posted that illustrated it’s in their nature to want to believe their story, at times without investigation or logic applied.

Its like parents that cannot accept that their kid stole candy, Not MY KID! Not my darling story! Its mine, I love it (even if its unture).

that was some great tips.. although there is a fine line balance between

    doing what you do because

    you want to

    as opposed to

    you have to

being frugal the way you are is great if you were doing it for personal reasons

but doing this because you have no money and have that stress then its not fun

    after all this tax talk

I think this may be the largest thread on welovecostarica.com 😀

what we should discuss and share are ways to create

    CASHFLOW in costa rica.

so aside from real estate commisions

are there people on here that make money using the internet here???

I met a 82 year old gentleman who is making a nice living publishing kindle ebooks on amazon

    I disagree 🙂

there is plenty one can do in these troubled times

living in costa rica on a self sustaining urban compund could be one

another is to develop skillsets that would be in demand in the near future

how about designing and building small footprint turnkey aquaponics for clients

as more people start to relocate to countries like costa rica I am sure these services will slowly be needed.

just by taking action of the sort separates you from the 99% of the populace that does not even have a passport.

so yes I believe being here is a great start.

I think costa rica is poised to withstand a large crisis.. as they have done pretty well when the crash 2008 real estate.

prices here have been slower but steady

    not really crashing.

I just sold 2 homes in 3 months

now can I say this in another 20 years ahead

I don’t know.. the culture here is also changing and not for the better in my opinion

    but

we can always move somewhere else

Of course, the same can be said for the German rooster that picks Super Bowl champs.

    so

    according to David Murray

everything is just peachy in the U.S.???

you have complete faith in your government to save you.

you know I would love to be naive and ignorant as you are regarding these issues

I really would feel so much better

I am tired and would love to just give this big ball of responsibility to the government if I thought they really had our best interest at heart

    and that they were capable

    but they don’t

    and they are NOT
Sorry, k, but the wealthy and powerful DO write the laws. They influence who gets nominated to run, finance the campaigns of their chosen, and pay the lobbyists to be sure that those who are elected toe the line. And they accomplish a great deal of that with resources unavailable to the rest of us. In every meaningful way, the already absurdly privileged do run the show primarily for their own selfish benefit.

If you cannot tolerate the prospect of giving up just a little of what you have to alleviate the needs and suffering of your fellow citizens, that simply puts you among a large minority (or maybe a majority) of your uncaring fellows. No one can make you feel empathy. Just don’t expect anyone to admire you for it.
David Murray

I would love to see your balance sheet of charitable donations

I would speculate without ever seeing it that you it’s very little

    why

because people that hold your beliefs are generally the cheapest people around when it comes to donations.

you love to preach about giving and you usually do this best with other peoples money.

do some research on our current president and vice president.. and see how generous they have been. obama has only increased his giving in the last 6 years because of attention to this area.

just spending your life in so called pubic service is the easy way of saying I never had the cajones to stake my claim in the real world

and settled for a government paycheck and pension after 20 years

    let me ask you David

in the last 3 years of working did you juice up all your overtime so you can max out your retirement salary..

    you sly dog you. 😀

I myself admire K for being a self reliant individual

taking a risk in the real world

creating REAL jobs in the marketplace from the profits of his efforts . not creating jobs off the theft of the taxpayers.

I admire you because your probably teaching your children some great qualities of self reliance and great core values.

which will help them become productive citizens of the world.

NO ONE can tell you how much to give or spend your money.. you simply give because you want to.

good for you and I hope the pleasure of meeting you one day.

think about the mass exodus that will occur over the next 10 years of affluent productive people in our society.

this is what needs to happen in droves..

True, if God grants wealth, it is to be used not of flashy, look at me crappola and a 3r yacht……money is to be at the service of man, not in control, nor as a end. ALso, flashy gets one robbed a lot…..
Interesting how many Church Fathers wrote about wealth, and the responsibilities it brings-not for flashy Things…..St. Thomas Aquinas wrote that greed is limitless and destroys the soul, family, nation, etc……
camby

your comment on money sounds really wonderful.. if we lived in a perfect world

    but its not

MONEY in our current society is all about options as money can buy you the best

    legal
    healthcare
    food

    etc

I agree with the stupidity of people that have been brainwashed that buy these exorbitant items

but i respect the idea that its there money and they can do what they want
In regards to what countries will do better in an systemic collapse, I have my doubts about countries like Costa Rica etc. Sure the peoples are resourceful and can live well on very little. But in the Armageddon scenario I believe that the corrupt elements would seize power in the chaos that would result with no military to enforce marshal law, “keep the peace” so to speak. We have seen this happen in many countries after a systemic collapse of government or financial markets.

I am not saying the USA will be a pleasant place to be, but our strong, well organized/armed military/law enforcement will be able control the chaos. Americans are resourceful people as well and the majority don’t live in big cities like Miami, NYC, LA, Chicago etc places I would not want to be. But rural parts of the US will fair much better. We also produce a great deal of food and have a fairly good (yet ageing) infrastructure.

If I believed any of this could happen (which I really don’t, just playing along) I think the large nations will do just fine relatively speaking. There will be no controls in Costa Rica, the “bad” elements, gangs etc will have no one to interfere with their activities.

A lot of tough talk on here, but when confronted by a roaming gang on your farm in CR with zero law enforcement to back you up? We’ll see how you do with your guns. Hoping we never have to find out:)
what makes you think we in costa rica have law enforcement back up??? :D:D:D:D:D:D

the police here come after the crime is committed to fill out paperwork.

you do NOT have roving gangs here and my original point is the majority of the population have some sort of agriculture skills and you add the fact of mild climate year round I have grown vegetables here just throwing seeds on the ground.

I am well armed and live in a community of also well armed neighbors so we can protect our selves if need be.

I think costa rica is very well prepared than the U.S. because most of the people here live on alot less with virtually NO GOVERMENT ENTITLEMENTS

this is the key words here.

    so there are NO

    food stamps money
    welfare checks
    unemployment benes for 99 weeks
    etc

you watch when the entitlements stop coming back in the states and you will have civil unrest my friend.

add to the mix that the U.S is one of the most violent countries in the world.

its a time bomb waiting to happen.
He certainly made a very stupid decision and he paid the ultimate price for that …

My immediate reaction was the horror of his family as they watched their father being mauled to death.

PS. But does this have to do with Costa Rica though?
Scott

it was horrific I know it was a bit extreme.

but my point is his perception of reality regarding the situation was so out of whack.. it caused him his death.

this is how most people are in the U.S regarding how they perceive the current situation in the U.S. . .. they are so ingrained with soundbites and misinformation propaganda..

they think all is well when its NOT. it’s like common sense has left the building in most cases.

here is a less intense article that gives another example.
