Thanks David. With all of the one-liners and off the wall speculation it was becoming very confusing. Now, with your explanation, it comes back to what I had felt all along. Thanks for, once again, being able give a reasoned synopsis of the situation and getting this discussion back on track. I don’t know what we would do without your help.

I read the original article in AM Costa Rica and I have tried to go through the postings on WeLoveCostaRica but there is so much speculation and so many trips down cul-de-sacs that I think we have lost the sense of what it is all about. Can someone please state the facts again in simple terms and plain English. Just what are they trying to get passed and how will it affect pensionados if it passes? Also when will it take effect?

    Thanks Arden:

I did finally reach Barry and we talked on the phone. Sorry your website broke down. They are so important. But one more little tip. I frequently do not leave a message on a voicemail that says “Leave a Message.” You never know who you are leaving a message for. It could be a voicemail for someone really weird that you don’t want to hear back from. A simple statement “This is Barry, please leave a message.” would save this dilema. Or as Scott and I used to hear in Britain “This is Whitehall 1212. Please leave a message.” And for you non-Brits I should explain that Witehall 1212 was the number for Scotland Yard and that was an inside joke.

So – can anyone tell me how to contact Barry Wilson? I had an email address for him and a phone number. The email address comes back as a failure and the phone is answered by a message curtly saying. “Leave a message” in a decidedly uninterested mumble. So I have no way of telling if that’s his number or not.

So now we’re going to start hearing the truth about “our” Embassy.
Perhaps the guy from Maine would like to tell us how we can corner Mr Peter Cianchette and find out why he employs that woman and probably others like her. But I doubt it. He’s probably like my Congressman and Senator in Florida who refused to talk to the people who were paying his bills. Does anyone remember what the Boston Tea Party was about? No Taxation without Representation. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that still applied in the United States. But one silver lining to that story is that Congressman Tom Feeny was finally defeated – by a landslide.

Two months ago I went with my office assistant to the U.S. Embassy to help her get a visa for a one week visit to Florida where she was to stay with my wife and visit Disney. This young lady is a dedicated University student and a very loyal employee. But, I guess the problem is that she is 23 years old and very pretty. She had letters from the University, from her parents, from her employer and from my wife, but nobody even looked at them. We were assigned to a very rude and nasty young woman who shouted at me to leave and then told the applcant she could not have a visa because she did not qualify. I think it is not too difficult to realize what the woman’s problem is. She has seen American men taking young Ticas to the U.S. for personal reasons or even to get them involved in the sex trade there. but she failed to take into account the possibility that this was something different. My wife was looking forward to intruducing the young lady to the country she has always admired and wanted to visit. But this mean and nasty woman at the Embassy has no heart and only a nasty dirty and very small mind. Yet, I suppose there is nobody to complain to.

I’m happy that three people had good experiences with the U.S. Embassy. But I am disgusted with it and I for one have no wish to return for such unwanted and unthinking treatment.

Here’s another fan of Don Paul (Dr. Dish). I tried the ICE system to save money. It took six weeks to get it in and four months so far to get it OUT! They just will not come and take the box away and – they keep charging me for a service I can’t use. It’s useless.

Don Paul is fast, he’s reliable, and he’s a real gentleman. Yes, his service is expensive but like Curtiss Mathis, it’s darn well worth it.

    Thanks Scott:

I will try AutoMercado. I was avoiding that because every time I make the ninety minute treck to the Capital Hypermas has almost everything I want and one stop is surely best. But I guess I need to make that extra stop once a month anyway.

You are right of course there are many wonderful steaks to be had in restaurants all over San Jose. That Brazillian Buffet in LaSabana has a dozen different meats, all of them perfect. The only problem there is knowing when to stop.

I will also give Don Fernandos a try.

I do not think that is at all a foolish suggestion. For all I know it might be quite acurate. However I do wish we could hear from some builders directly and I think many people who are contemplating building in CR would welcome their input. One thing that may not quite add up in your suggestion is that not all materials have gone up as much as steel and concrete and also I don’t think the labor costs have gone up.

    O.K. Building costs are up.
Up from what – to what?
Can anyone tell us what is the cost of building a house in the Central Valley (for instance)excluding architect fees, permits, connections etc? Obviously the answer will depend on whether we’re talking about a medium quality or a high quality structure. But let’s find out what the costs really are now that everything has gone up 30%.

I have three fast moving streams on my property. In fact my main concern right now is how to tame them in the rainy season. So, are there any simple ways to harvest their power to make it into electricity?

Oh! Oh!. Hold your horses. I told you I was going to deal with Teja Real and I did. Now I wish I had not. Looks like this is another colosal rip-off. And they seemed so nice. I am trying to get all the information together to give a full report but for right now I strongly suggest that you not deal with Teja Real. I’ll be back in a few days on this.

Thanks jcmcgee. I think this is the best place. I did try to find other comparable tiles but failed.

Jorge at Teja Real speaks excellent English and the compnay has a good reputation and (I think) reasonable prices. We have their tiles on one house and I’m happy, so now I’m putting them on the next one also.

You can reach Jorge at the office number 2235 0201 or on his cell phone 8829 4887. Please tell him you heard about him on WeLoveCostaRica.com or tell him David sent you.

    Scott:

I said that as far as I am concerned this thread was closed once the rabid anti-semetic hatred started. The thread started with someone asking how many Jews are in Costa Rica and then a few friendly people added their own comments. But now the party is over as far as I am concerned. We were all using good manners and common sense. But now that has changed. Of course I could answer his accusations. But I will not. Jews are no more perfect than any other race. But I believe they have a right to exist on that tiny piece of land that the Bible says God gave to them. On that little piece of land they say – No, we will not walk wordlessly into the gas chambers again. If you want us this time come and get us. But this time we are prepared with nuclear weapons. We will not use them unless our backs are against the wall. But just be warned. Never again!

Jews have lived in the Promised Land for more than 3000 years. Palestinians are not of any particular ethnic background. They came from many countries to try to occupy Israel at a time when most Jews had been deported from their homeland. But there was always a remnant of Jews there so nobody can possibly say that the Jews “occupied” the land. Now tiny Israel is surrounded by enemy nations. 5 million Jews surrounded by 1.3 billion enemies. Who wouldn’t arm themselves with the best protection money can buy? And now the United States Government has supervised the division of the land and handed it over to the people whose aim is to wipe out every Jew from the face of the earth. Shame on America!

I could answer every one his hate-filled suedo facts but this is not the place to do it. This website is, as someone else said, “We loveCosta Rica.” Let’s keep it to that. But Scott we can certainly talk privately if you want to know more.
