It’s a difficult question to answer. I would say that if you cannot live without them then take them. What area are you looking to live in Costa Rica? I think befor you worry about what to do with your antiques you may want to visit the area that you are looking to purchase a home or build, to get a feel of the area. As there are certainly multi million dollar homes, there are as many if not more in the price range you listed. Take a look at the numerous articles about affordable real estate that Scott has on the website. Each week he sends out an email with NEW articles or do an archive search. There is a ton of info that is very helpful. At least it has been to me. Sorry for not a more definate answer, but as stated earlier it’s difficult to answer.

    Thanks Bill,
I had read the article, and it was very informative, but still didn’t seem to answer the question regarding any LUMP sum amounts. The other sites you mentioned I also look at on a regular basis, but there haven’t been any new updates. I guess where I am confused is about the time frame from temp to perm residency and if that is linked to the lump sum amount for rentista status. Since we will not be coming down till Oct. I still have time for any new info and will definately be in contact with an attorney when the time arrives.

ps I had corresponded with you earlier regarding San Ramon. We will be visiting with Ben and Jose to look at several properties when there in Oct.

I think that it is safe to say that with your current income you should have no problem if you wait for 4 years. You may want to take a look at this article regarding the new residency laws. It will explain more in detail of what is required, since it really doesn’t have to do with how much you make each year. The other concern is that internet is not always available in all areas, this may be much more inmproved in 4yrs, but I assume that since your husband works from home that he MUST rely on having a reliable connection. Here’s the link that I mentioned above. https://www.welovecostarica.com/members/953.cfm

    Scott,
Just a thought, but how about having to buy your book FIRST, for free VIP status to articles and discussion forums! I can only say that this discussion forum is by far the BEST for information out there. I for one would have no problem if their was a fee involved,(I did however buy the book) Please keep up the great work. Please don’t lynch me vip members LOL

    Ben & Carol,
Just a thought, but since none of the jewelry other than wedding ring and tennis bracelet are worn, why not leave them in the states, or designate them to a daughter, grandaughter since it would seem that they should be passed down through the generations. I don’t know if that even applies, but I know when the time comes for us to make the permanent move my daughters will be RAIDING my jewelry box!
    Good Luck with your decision.

    Scott,
Lotus is correct, we have frinds and neighbors from NYC that own a home across the street from us in Florida as a pert time residence, they sold their co-op a few years ago, and rented an apartement in NYC as they also own a home in Long Island. They told us the same when they decided to purchase another condo in Manhattan that they are about 1000.00 a sq ft! It’s needless to say Mind Boggling! Just when I thought that we did well paying about 56.00 a sq ft to now about 220.00 a sq ft in 11 years! I think I would be dead befor we hit 1000.00 a sq ft! LOL

For anyone STILL interested in Paragon, there is a recent post on the ARCR Forum, describing their recent nightmare.

Here’s another one for floor plans that you can use for FREE as well. I can’t seem to get the hang of them, but they are fun to play with.

    Dave,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this(not long winded at all)!! LOL. It really is helpful info. Ben does sound like he is stretched a little thin with all those projects at the same time. We will have about 17 days to explore when we go in Oct and I am also going to look at some property in the same area called Butterfly Dance(cann’t remember the spanish name right now. I also have a friend that I work with who is originally from Puerto Rico, but his brother lives in Costa Rica and said that he knows of alot of good deals. He loves it there so much he won’t even come back to the states to visit!
    Thanks again,
    Debbie
    PS Where did you buy?

Ms. Bryan, your resume’ is quite impressive. I am sure that in your 81 years that you have come across MANY different personalities, and with your background that you would have handled these encounters in a professional manner. It seems that you keep adding fuel to the fire! I would hope that you have taken the time to read ALL the other posts on this forum and you will find alot of valued information. I know I have. While I may not agree with everything that is said, I would certainly NOT insult anyone. As in my prior post SMILE !!! life is too short!

Alot of people seem to confuse Residency with Citizenship. They are 2 different things. I try to explain it to my friends and family in the states as such: For example: John and Jane live in New York, but also own a home in Florida. They will still be a US citizen, but they need to decide where their permanent residency is since there time is split. Whatever tax advantage works for them is usually where they will pick as their permanent residency. I know it is a different and harder process to do in CR, but it seems to satisfy family with that explanation. I have NO reason that I would need to become a citizen, but only a resident. I don’t think anything was meant as an insult. I for one never ever thought that I would be looked at as second class. I was born a woman and will always be one! Smile life’s too short

Regular gasoline hit at about 2.84 a gallon yesterday. Since I live in an area with alot a snowbirds it hasn’t seemed to affect the traffic around here. There are still too many cars on the road! Most will be heading back up north shortly. Housing has slowed down. With NO insurance companies wanting to write homeowners polices due to hurricanes, the only company that is writing is the state plan. Premiums are expected to go way up again, and again. Retirees years ago that bought mobile homes can no longer afford to insure them, and thay most likely will not even be able to sell them. Yet people still ask “Why do you want to move to Costa Rica?”
The answer is clear to us.
