We combat veterans are never in “The stupidity mode when traveling.” We learned to see and listen to everything in our surroundings. You were almost skinned, if you lost or left you weapon(s) unsecured! To this day, the only thing I keep in my vehicles are wet wipes; only because my wife insists!

I am in the first stage of considering purchasing a convertible second car for my wife in Costa Rica. Anyone have any insights or suggestions?

Be a man, we all have to pay for the mistakes we make! If you do not, be prepared never to return to the U.S. You will be arrested. And, once your passport expires, I assume you are a U.S. citizen; you are screwed in more ways than one! I currently work for the Justice Department, believe me, maravilla is right on point, there are international agreements between the U.S. and Costa Rica, that will make your head spin! And, you will be listed on the federal NCIC data base, with information provided by your State of residence.

trish, I also live in Playa Hermosa. The roads are challenging in Playa Hermosa and El Coco, to say the least. I like many others, have been debating whether to ship, or buy in Costa Rica. We finally decided to ship my 2006 V8 4Runner Sport Edition SUV, with only 9,000 original miles, to Costa Rica, via Arden, Shipcostarica.com. I have rented several SUVs, however, nothing beats the ride and comfort of the 4Runner, not to mention four wheel drive and down-hill-assist, standard with this SUV. The other positive aspects of this vehicle is, it can tow a 7,000 pound boat or trailer. I was pleasantly surprised to see several 2005-2006 4Runners in Playa Hermosa. I also purchased an expensive custom make car cover for my 4Runner, to keep it clean, dry and protected, when parked for long periods.

costaricafinca, you are right, I did see one on display, when I was there last. However, at their asking price, they would have to put a gun to my head to buy it!

Any day above ground, is a good day, even in Costa Rica!

I currently have one corporation for my house, and another for my SUV. I will soon be getting a third, for my sailboat. I consider the possibility of paying $300.00 for each, a small price to pay for protection of my assets!

A four tour Vietnam Chief Warrant Officer, by the name of Rambo (his real name;) who trained me to fly Army helicopters in 1973; would stall the aircraft, at the drop of a dime. He pounded in my head every day, “Always have a plan B!” He was right in 1973, and he is still right today! I will believe the proposed tax situations, when I see them. Until then, I remember why I relocated to Costa Rica, and enjoy!

The suggestions to rent for a period of time, are very valid. In my case, I did not rent first, however, I have been traveling to Costa Rica for the last thirteen years. In 2009, while vacationing in Guancaste, I stumbled upon a must buy beachfront home (35% discount because of divorce.) I questioned the expats in the area, as to who the best realestate broker in the area was, I was proved with an excellent recommendation. Within two days, I hired a Costa Rican attorney, hired a property management company, formed a Ltda. corporation, and had a signed sales agreement in my hand. We returned to the States two weeks later, one month later, my Costa Rican attorney completed the closing in Costa Rica for us. We were lucky in terms of the property, however, over the years, I have researched Costa Rica and Costa Rican property matters.

To each his/her own……however, I feel safer in Costa Rica than Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are at least two or three murders a day in Philadelphia. I am always in combat mode in Philadelphia. Hell, I felt safer in Vietnam! In Costa Rica, I can finally relax. It all boils down to expectations and experiences. Good people, clean air, good food, relaxed lifestyle and beautiful nature; what more could you ask for.

Like alewis, I have also read the forums regarding this subject matter. I have a small 11 pound Pomeranian. I am still unclear whether I can carry her in the passenger compartment with us, or not. Can anyone enlighten me on this matter?

In short, the U.S. is putting pressure on Central American and South American countries, to control money laundering. However, the worlds biggest money launderer, is Russia.
