Membercostaricafinca,
Thanks.Disabled Veteran
MemberI have enjoyed many adventures around the world. My recommendation would be, do lots of homework and more home work. I am retired military, with two combat tours; my main concern would be Mexico. The drug cartels and bandits are out-gunning and running circles around the Mexican Army, Marines and police. Remember, your motorhome, will be a big target, announcing, “I am a rich gringo.”

MemberScott,
I am a former Army Vietnam helicopter pilot. We taught Marine helicopter pilots, how to drink, shoot the shit and chase women from 500 feet, through AK-47 and RPG fire. Thanks for bringing back some good memories!!!!!!!!!!Disabled Veteran
MemberGreat information. Thanks for sharing. I am a dog lover. After years of research, I guess I still have more to learn about Costa Rica!

MemberI would concur with Scott. Assume that the IRS knows everything you do in Costa Rica or anywhere else offshore! Costa Rica and the U.S. share banking and other data. Unless you want to do additional reporting to the IRS and The Department of Treasury, keep less than $10,000 in any Costa Rican bank account. You would be surprised at what our government computers can do! The watchers are also being watched by someone else!

MemberSprite,
I would agree with you in part, and disagree in part. I am a federal employee with the Department of Justice (two more years to retire.) Once we bought our home in CR, I spent hours upon hours researching everything I could find about CR taxes and U.S. taxes, I consider this a personal responsibility. Federal agency budgets have been cut to 2009 levels. The IRS has reduced the number of its investigative agents. Tax audits have been reduced, for earners under $150,000. There is currently a federal hiring freeze. Federal salaries have been frozen for two years, possibly five; if proposed legislation is passed. The truth being told, because of the two year salary freeze and the proposed five year salary freeze, most federal employees, including the IRS, could care less about doing their jobs. The IRS knows less about the tax code than you do, the head of the IRS has his accountant do his taxes; because the code is too complex for even him.Disabled Veteran
MemberEnjoy mayonnaise while you can……here in the U.S. you almost need to obtain a equity line of credit, to buy a jar! They reduced the jar size and raised the price.

MemberWe bought our home two years ago. WeloveCostaRica.com had a guest U.S. tax attorney who wrote about the IRS Form 5471. I prepared our IRS 1040 Form using TaxAct, I also downloaded and prepared IRS Form 5471, which I attached to my IRS Form 1040. I followed the exact instructions provided by the WeLoveCostaRica.com guest tax attorney. I also claimed the Costa Rican property tax deduction, on my 1040. I have not had any issues with the IRS, in terms of the CR property tax deduction. I maintain less than $10,000 in our CR bank, thus, I do not have to file the additional form with the IRS and The Treasury.

MemberMaravilla,
You are not the only one! I bought an expensive digital camera last year, only yesterday, did my nephew teach me how to upload on my computer. I would love to see the piece you had made. It appears we have similiar furniture tastes.Disabled Veteran
MemberDavid and Maravilla,
Thanks again, you both have been extremely helpful, I really appreciate it.Disabled Veteran
MemberDavid,
Our home is in Playa Hermosa. We are still trying to figure out how to dispose of the furniture in the house now. We pack small appliances, etc. in our suitcases, when we return twice a year. I will be shipping my 9000 original miles, 2006 Toyota 4Runner, packed full, in a container. Thanks for reminding me about Sarchi.

MemberThanks everyone,
We bought a home in 2009, and placed it within a corporation. Like most people, I never thought about the death aspect! The info was very helpful.
