I’ve visited CR 4 times.
Only 1 . . . incident, if you can call it that.Tamarindo. My wife and I decided to walk back to our hotel on the beach one night.
A couple guys started following us. (we were still right in front of a resturant at the time). We stop, they stop. We walk, they walk. They couldnt have made it much more obvious.
So we turned around and walked right past them, up onto the street, and went back that way.My point – keep an eye on your surroundings, and you’ll be fine.
drummerdavebMemberI have to disagree w/ Jenny.
I’ve stayed in CR, and repeatedly found very clean places to stay from $25 to $50/night (and the more expensive ones were for 4 adults with breakfast and tax included.)
The ones for $25-$30 were basic, but never dirty.I wouldnt hesitate to go back.
Low rents with a Tico owned place usually means a family run business, who cares about their place. I for one have never seen mice in the room. Are you going to find tons of amenities for $35? No.
But I’ve always had hot water and clean rooms.September 21, 2007 at 3:23 pm in reply to: Do I really need an SUV or is a Midsize car enough #186760drummerdavebMemberI personally would recommend a 4×4.
A couple years ago we were down, and we were headed to La Fortuna. About 1/2 hour out, there was a landslide that blocked the road. They were clearing it, but the backhoe broke down.
So it was go back and stay somewhere else, or go around. The locals in the 4wd Toyota vans (w/ the snorkels on them) were going around. They said we could follow (in our Terios). If we tried it in a Sedan, we’d still be there. There would be no possible way to make it in a non-4wd. It was technically a road, but more like rock climbing w/ a bit of mudding thrown in.
I personally loved the experience. I couldnt have done it w/out my 4wd.drummerdavebMember🙁
drummerdavebMemberI find it interesting how closely Paragon monitors this message board.
drummerdavebMemberOh, I dont know about that.
Unless it’s due to rust, VWs have some seriously good suspension for offroading.
I’ve owned a ’69, ’70, ’71 and ’76 Bug. 2 were Baja bugs.
All you need to make them off-road ready is some coil-over shocks and big tires. Thats it.I remember my VW being able to go places (in winter) that my buddy couldnt do in his 4WD Jeep.
I wouldnt hesitate to take a bug to CR.
Although, I’d probably look for a VW Thing to take instead. More ground clearance, and beefier suspension parts.drummerdavebMemberTake a look on craigslist. I saw some carribean properties there (seemed to be pretty cheap).
drummerdavebMemberWell, I found and booked my tickets.
I used Kayak (thanks for hte link!), and it tracked down the best fare for me.
Delta had tickets (booked on delta.com) for $514 total from Cincy (only 2 hrs from home) on my dates over thanksgiving.
I suppose I could be missing out on some future sale fare, but a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush, right?
drummerdavebMemberIm in Louisville (SDF), which sucks when you’re trying to find reasonable airfare to anywhere.
So far, Frontier’s new service is the best deal I’ve found, for $520 from Louisville, or $500 from Indy, but then, they’re not the ideal dates either.
I might mention, we took Frontier down to Cancun last September, and it was really really nice. We were extremely pleased.I’ll check out those other sites.
. .. .It must be nice being able to get a direct flight to CR. . .. or anywhere for that matter.
drummerdavebMemberI was in Tamarindo for a few days I guess 2 years ago?
Both at night:
I was offered drugs.
My wife and I decided to walk back to our hotel on the beach (from the circle). A couple guys started following. We noticed, so we stopped.. . . they stopped & pretended to look at the ocean. We started walking, they started walking. We stopped again, they stopped & pretended to look at the stars.. Obviously they were following until we got to a less . . . lighted & visible spot.
We walked back up to the street (past them), and had no further issues. You have to keep your eyes open, but I dont expect to be accosted on the street either, but watch dark alleys & beaches.
Im not sure I’ll go back there next time Im down. Probably not actually. Im sure there are plenty other nice beaches with less crime.
drummerdavebMemberIf you only know how to order a beer, the key words are
“Imperial” and “Bavaria Negra”.
🙂You want to learn a few phrases like:
“I am lost. How do I get to . .. ?” — You’ll use that one a lot!
“Where is the Bathroom?”
“Check please” (They wont bring your check until you ask for it.)
“How much is it?”drummerdavebMemberI’ve stayed at Los Lagos outside La Fortuna.
Its at the base of the Arenal Volcano, and if there are no clouds, its a good location to see the volcano.
They also have a geothermal heated hottub (also heated) pool w/ a waterslide, as well as a cold pool.
They also have a little zoo w/ crocs & frogs & stuff on their grounds.drummerdavebMemberLiving – 2 syllables
United – 3 syllables.;P
drummerdavebMemberI’ve used Tri-color a couple times. Never any problems.
drummerdavebMemberOk, just as long as you’re only window-shopping. 🙂
And good point about the people. They’re one of the best things about CR.
