Bob,
Try http://www.expatfocus.com/ This discussion forum is for expats around the world and has a list of countries, including Panama, that are covered specifically. Because the site is not as focused as Welovecostarica, I can’t say how detailed the posts are.
I’m sure that Welovecostarica correspondents are much better-looking.

editerMemberSorry Scott,
I was afraid that posting the message in the original thread would place it too far down on the page and it wouldn’t be seen by as many readers. I was able to find my answer elsewhere, though. I’ve been assured that there should be plenty of B&Bs that with available rooms. They might be a little frayed around the edges, but my companions and I just want clean beds and showers.

editerMemberJust one extra comment, and not political, from someone who’s been reading this discussion thread. One reason that I’m contemplating a move to CR is that the Ticos have a reputation for courtesy and a desire to avoid unnecessary confrontation. When I read the initial message in this discussion, I recognized that this was a person who likes to stir up squabbles; in other words, a troublemaker. I see that several responders admire this trait. I don’t.
There are enough real reasons for confrontation in the world. We don’t need to manufacture artificial disputes. I witnessed a of lot ill will generated in this discussion that really didn’t need to be raised. Hopefully when I am able to make my move to Pura Vida, I can avoid people who like to argue over trivial matters. I’ll try to keep my acquaintances limited to people with a more Tico attitude toward life.

editerMemberAhh, so it’s a regional word. Thanks Phil. Maybe next trip I’ll head out to Guanacaste and try to record the elusive gui-pi-pia.

editerMemberSo I guess that the word is just a concoction of some Hollywood songwriter. I’m glad I asked. I could have been walking around Costa Rica saying “guipipia” to everyone. and they’d be thinking “What’s this idiot saying?”
Thanks for the info,

P.S. If you get a chance to see Carnival in Costa Rica, watch it. It was filmed in 1947 and they make fun of the streets not having names or numbers. Nothing’s changed much in sixty years.
editerMemberThanks jrego,
I will definitely look into GSM. It sounds like an ideal alternative to taking my laptop. Thanks for the tip.
We’re also planning on bringing three small two-way radios to keep in touch with each other during times when we split up. They are supposed to have a range of up to five miles. Does anyone have an experience with these devices in CR. On paper it sounds like a good idea, but I wonder if they would just be extra weight to worry about.

editerMemberI understand about the laptop. I had mine with me on last May and was worried about it the whole trip. I didn’t know the internet cafes had computers to use. I thought you had to bring your own to connect to the internet. So, thanks. I’ll leave mine behind.
We were planning to do most of our traveling away from the beaches. Part of the reason for this trip is to scout out possible properties to purchase for retirement. I’m particularly interested in the Central Valley around Alejuela, Grecia, and Atenas. Would we be seeing many Costa Ricans vacationing in these areas?
Scott, I can’t begin to tell you how helpful Welovecostarica has been in educating me about retirement possibilities in CR. Thanks for providing this excellent source of information.
