Thanks, David, for your answer. I still don’t know if I can buy DE in CR or if I need to ship it. It is a very good, human- and animal-safe pest control, and I was hoping that it could be used to stop leaf-cutter ants.

We don’t speak Spanish. Do you? From the other post about the people who drove from Illinois to CR, they said that is the most important thing. From the fact that you say you are “moving back” to CR, I would infer that you do speak fluent Spanish. When are you intending to go? Do you know about taking pets across all the borders? We would be taking our boxer dog.

My husband and I have considered driving from Texas to Costa Rica. We don’t speak much Spanish, which has been one of the deterring factors to us. We thought if we could get a convoy together, we might consider driving. We want to take our dog by vehicle and would have to check on all the various country’s restrictions on animals. If you’re interested in convoying, please reply on this discussion board.

My husband and I live in Texas and have wondered about driving to Costa Rica to make it easier to take our pet. However, right now there has been so much violence on the border between Mexico and Texas that we couldn’t imagine driving through Mexico. Sounds like you never felt threatened. If there had only been two of you (1 man, 1 woman) would you have felt safe? We figured we’d need a convoy to feel OK. Also, did you take a pet? Don’t know what the laws are for transporting animals through the various countries.

    Thanks for any info.

The last time we were there (in December 2007) we rented a cell phone from the rental car company. It was very reasonable–I think about $3.00 a day. I don’t remember the maximum daily minutes, but we wanted it to be able to reach the US in case of an emergency. Anyway, if you’re renting a car, it would be worth looking into.

Thanks for the info. Yes, it would be smart to build on one level, however the lot is at the top of a hill which has been leveled. The leveled area is not quite as large as what our house will need. We could put the house at an angle, but that would block a lot of our view. If we come in off the road behind the house to a garage, our driveway will be a lot more level and a lot shorter. If we make the leveled area of the lot larger, we will be lower and lose much of our view. Do you know anything about dumb waiters? We could probably load our stuff on that, and maybe ourselves one at a time? Will look into the stair climber.

Thanks for the information. I went to the website, and it is in Dutch (I guess that’s the language). Do you know how to get info on them in English?
