Planning an extended trip next January to Costa Rica with our dog and was wondering is it possible to drive to Costa Rica from the states? If so what are the pros and cons? Anyone done it? Let me know and thanks in advance.
Stuart
Scott’s right. There have been extended discussions on this matter.
Bottom Line: With the current situation in Mexico plus the headaches of crossing seven or so borders, and complicated by the four-legger’s need to cross those borders too, it’s not to be undertaken lightly. You’ll lose time in transit and you may very well not save any money.
Know, too, that your vehicle can only legally be in Costa Rica for ninety days. You must obtain the necessary permit when you enter and it cannot be extended. Should the Transitos catch you after that, there’s the real possibility that your vehicle will be impounded. Then what?
The smart money says not to do this.
Thank you for your input. I just thought I would ask. We want to bring our dog with us and were planning to fly out of JFK next January. That was until I read the fine print in the pet policy that states if it is above or below a certain temperature the airport does not allow the pets to fly. If we pre buy tickets, then we would be subject to a change fee and fare increases, that may be waived by the airport personnel. Unfortunately that can’t tell you in advance how this will be handled at the airport and you have to drive down to the airport on the day of departure. Flying out of NY in January there is a great chance that they would not let our dog fly on the date that we booked our flight. I guess we could buy a changeable flight, but that would be an additional $500 a ticket at least. The other option is to drive down to Miami. Therefore I was thinking that if I was going to drive that far why not the whole way, since we are planning to visit for around 3 months. But after further review I don’t think that would be a good choice. But I figured I would just get the feedback. So thanks again for your insight. Have a great day.
