I am not aware of any formal companies that will lease for 6 months. You might have good luck with “informal” that rent older Elantras and Geo Trackers. I believe there is one in the directory on this site and they also advertise in the Tico Times Online and AM Costa Rica.

A possible option would be to buy a very popular car that could be sold quickly:

    Hyundai Galloper TD 1993 http://autos.fijatevos.com/listing-Hyundai+Galloper+TD+1993-717.html

    Suzuki Sidekick 1997

You could use it while you are here and sell it when you plan to leave. If you were dealing with a reputable dealer, they would probably even promise to take it on consignment for you when you leave. Obviously they would have to be VERY reputable in this case, because you would leave and depend on them to wire you the money upon sale.

There would be some costs involved (like transfer taxes – dealer’s commission), but it would more than likely work out to be more economical than renting for 6 months.

I would like to point out that a developer can’t call Facio and Stewart “partners”. Facio is a big name law firm here in Costa Rica, but lots of shady people have big name lawyers. Stewart offers escrow and financing in addition to their title guaranty, so you would have to verify what exactly is their standing on this development. A developer can hire the best architect in the country to do plans and perspectives, but that doesn’t mean that anything will actually get built.

Not to say that Costa Developers is shady, but I am saying you can’t say that they are reputable based on who their architect or lawyer is.

Hi D Rushton, I did not receive your emails, but it could have been due to confusion about the address. Our site address is autos.fijatevos.com (or wheelscr.com) and the email is info@fijatevos.com , although I should receive any email addressed to any address on our server – computers don’t alway work as we expect them to 😉

Anyone interested in buying a car can browse through the site in Spanish and contact the dealer directly. If you don’t speak Spanish, don’t want to drive around San Jose and would like a guide you can use our PASS service. For $250 dollars we provide the following services:
    – Assist you by email or phone in determining what make and model suits your needs and budget.
    – Advise you as to arrangements you might need to make in advance in order to complete the financial portion of the purchase (wire transfer PIN, debit card, etc.)
    – Pick you up at your hotel in San José
    – Take you to see quality cars that meet your specifications, either at dealers advertising on our site or other reputable dealers.
    – Assist you in completing the purchase. If the car is coming to Costa Rica for the first time you may need to wait one day in order for the temporary plates to be issued by the National Registry, so we will return the next day to take you to pick up your car.

Many of our clients want to make the purchase as quickly as possible, we have had cases where the person flew in to San José in the morning and drove off with their car in the afternoon. Other clients want to check every angle, need time for a wire transfer to go through, or just sleep on the matter; so the purchase takes a few days.

The best way to contact us is from the English page on our site ( http://autos.fijatevos.com/english.html ) Also you can see some testimonials there and more details.

I have asked to be notified of replies to this thread, so I will also be happy to answer any further questions anyone may have about buying a vehicle in Costa Rica.
