Too bad. I was thinking about brewing in CR. More of a hobby than a business. Scott, I’m single and do make it out for a beer and a game of Futbal. You are correct about the women.
frettlessMemberMy main reason for wanting to make a move is my love of Costa Rica and the Ticos. My secondary reason is that things are going down hill in the USA and I don’t see anything changing that, regardless of which liar gets elected. I think that a more interesting discussion would be about what is going on in Costa Rican Politics. While ex-pats can’t vote it is without a doubt going to impact us.
frettlessMemberGood point. No one has had the political courage to do anything about it because they would be voted out of office. I remember the Governor of Illinois, Ogilviy losing his bid for re-election soley on the basis of his passing a state income tax. It was the financially responsible thing to do. That was over 30 years ago and as far as I know the state and it’s citizens survived it. Voters either need to wake up or someone has to risk not getting re-elected for anything to happen, Fat chance IMHO. I’ll go with the Caja when I’m ready to pull the trigger on the Big Move.
frettlessMemberUnless something changes, the tax scenario for Costa Rica looks the same as it does for Florida only on a smaller scale: Real Estate prices driven artificially high due to speculation followed by out of line property taxes due to assessments being based on the inflated property values. This is one of many reasons (oversupply being the biggest)why nothing is moving in Florida.
frettlessMemberThanks Peg & Deb. I will do my dilligence. It would be great to avoid connecting in Miami. The wait for a gate is at least 20 minutes from the time that you land and it’s been even longer. It’s a hike from one terminal to the next and you need to go through security again unless you are lucky enough to arrive at the same terminal that you are departing from. I almost missed my connection to SJO twice!
frettlessMember“Maybe they want to have the possibility of more income, more appliances, bigger homes, possibly one on the beach. Who the hell are we to deny them the right to have aspirations in their own country, or tell them they cannot decide for themselves what they want? Nobody who is not a native born Tico has that privilege.”
This point is a good one. Us Gringos have obtained all of these things somewhere down the road and some of us are at the point that they aren’t important to us anymore. Not so for many Ticos and it is thier country. CAFTA, NAFTA, whatever. Have you ever read any of these treaties? If that wouldn’t be confusing enough the propaganda from both the YES and NO camp confuses the issues even more. Democracy is without a doubt more democratic in Costa Rica than in the USA and I think that has to do with the size of Costa Rica and it’s government more than anything else. Most elected officials over the entire world IMHO are corrupt and put thier own interests over the folks that elected them. If anyone thinks that life in Costa Rica is going to be really terrible 15 years from now as a result of this treaty just remember that everything is relative. If you prefer life in Costa Rica over the US now just think about what life in The States will be like in 15 years. Costa Rica will most likely still be looking way better, no matter what CAFTA brings.
frettlessMemberI’m booked out of Orlando connecting in Miami (I hate that airport!) with an AA Netsaver fare of $178. These fares don’t come along every day so I had to jump on it and will be in CR 11/23-12/03. I think that AA does this if the seats aren’t selling quickly enough. When a certain amount are sold the fares are offerred at a rate of about $545 out of Tampa or Orlando. I live in Sarasota and starting next year I can at least get to Miami with American Eagle and won’t have to drive to TPA.

I’m afraid that after the first year I will get the itch to do something. Not only am I a native english speaker but I am also considered a native speaker of German. Maybe I would have it easier with 2 languages.
