no no no…. if you burn more fuel, the government receives more tax…. 🙂
An employee receives ± col. 800 an hour (11 tax-paying cars) so this is “big” business…… 🙂 🙂genn789MemberHave a look at http://www.alterra.co.cr and then go to Menu and Aeropuerto. Scroll down and you will see:
Impuestos de Salida:
• Nacional – Extranjero – Residente: $26So the friend of the friend of…. made a mistake…… or paid somebody “voluntary” $ 100.–
genn789MemberMost internetcafes use Windows-xp so that is no problem. So….
1- better buy a USB memory stick for data you realy need. All computers have USB.
2- make a kind of “code-card” with passwords which only you can read and undertand in case you loose it. So you will not loose acces to important sites. You can also put personal info on the USB-stick which only you can understand. Be creative…
3- LEAVE THE LAPTOP AT HOME. Safer for you….. and your laptop.Have a nice time in Costa Rica.
genn789MemberHi, I come from The Netherlands and years ago I had the “romantic idea” of having a farm and a nice house on it. Now I know better after living in several places in CR. To me bars are never decorative. Please read this:Posted Dec 27,2006 6:24 AM GringoTico
JulioScott,More importantly (much, much, much more), the trials and tribulations of maintaining security at a detached residential unit FAR outweigh any financial drawback of buying a condo.
I, and many others on this forum, have talked about this issue many times, but it’s very hard for us Gringos to accept it. It’s one of those things that you have to experience for yourself before you develop the extreme level of paranoia necessary to keep your material possessions from walking.
IMHO the most difficult cultural challenge for Gringos living in CR is the fact that you truly become a slave of your house. The best way to avoid a burglary is to ALWAYS have someone there. That means never leaving, or hiring a live-in caretaker. Please don’t make me rehash what happened to us. It’s too depressing. Just listen to me when I tell you that if I had gobs and gobs of money to pay for security, I would consider it once again. Short of that, we’ll be looking at condos and highly secure gated communities when the time comes. If the investment is slightly worse than a detached home not in a gated community, then that’s the price of freedom and tranquility. Cheap if you ask me.
Best regards, Bart
genn789MemberHi, that is great but you wrote “…..was done correctly and on it’s way to C.R..,….”.
That means that you don’t have it yet, would like to know the final result…. within 6 months ? one year ?genn789MemberIf you want access to the internet you can do that by cable, your provider will be RACSA….. If you want internet by telephone-line (+ADSL) you provider will be RACSA….. That is the choice (..?..) at this moment, and yes it is run by the government.
genn789MemberThey pay their employees ± $ 15,– for one day hard working, 6 days a week.
So you pay more in their stores and they pay the employees less, just to keep the shareholders satisfied……Let’s go to other stores……

genn789MemberWe live near Santa Ana (San Rafael de Alajuela) in a very nice apartment. The climat is very good, we don´t use fans or AC. Nearby a good hospital (CIMA), shopping malls and restaurants. Try a search on this site: “Concasa” and you will find comments from Scott about this project. If you are not sure to buy, rent an apartment (somewhere in the Santa Ana area) and buy something 1 or 2 years later. There are allways nice houses and apartments for sale in this beautifull country.

genn789MemberHi, I agree with davidcmurray but also have a look at:
http://www.guardianangelscr.com/ (about expats)
http://www.amcostarica.com/ (daily news in English)
http://home.tiscali.nl/wonenincostarica/wonenincostarica/wicr.htm (rent an apartment)Try to spend some time in CR, first a vacation and then rent a house or apartment. See if you like the culture, the people, the system before you spend your money in a house. If you don’t like it, you have to sell it, a lot of problems, and maybe loose a lot of money.
Sounds that the central valley is the best for you (work).
Visa: talk with a good attorney here in CR.
My opinion: just do it, you won’t regret it !!!
