Yes, that’s expensive. But do you have any options? What are you comparing the cost to? U.S.? What did the service call cost you compared to U.S.? You might do well to think of overall costs, not just one part. Just sayin’ 😕

Have you considered a universal remote?

    non profit…
Has that worked for other newspapers?

I read the Tico Times online but I would never dream of paying money for it.

    What do you think?
There are only a couple not-for-profit newspapers in the U.S. simply because newspapers were a fantastic business (now they are just very good – not talking about top 50 major markets here, but rather “community” newspapers.)The newspapers that went not-for-profit did it for estate tax evasion rather than public support.

And of course, newspapers make their 80% of revenue from ads, not from subscriptions.

Whether or not you think paying $5 a month to get the electronic version is a personal value decision. If you think it has value, buy it. If not, don’t.

Personally, I think having a print newspaper is an important part of any community. Especially where the community at large is not well connected to the web.

Re: eReaders… the NookColor kicks butt. In January they will be offering an upgrade that will run Android, thus making the NookColor more like a tablet computer.
Otherwise, our return is fairly simple. Can anyone recommend a reliable accountant here who will execute our returns??
Why not file it yourself using the online services? Turbotax is highly rated by Consumer Reports. About $80 and it’s all done online. State and Federal.

4 million dogs are killed every year!
    Breeders = puppy mills.
Remember all the Shina Ibu hubub when their webcam was live? Wonder how many of those dogs are dead now because they grew up and were abandoned.
    Rescue dogs are best.
Hi All,

I also found the Lighthouse Animal Rescue website recently, located in Atenas, and am really enjoying the heart-warming stories, photos and videos about the dogs and other animals they rescue.

They have entered the Petfinder Shelter Challenge to try to win prize money to help cover the costs of rescuing & rehabilitating the abandoned and abused animals. People vote for their favorite shelter, and the groups that get the most votes win. Right now they are in 2nd place in the International division, but are in danger of losing out to another group that is gaining on them.

Please consider joining me to vote for them, either one time or on a daily basis, until Dec. 19. Instructions can be found at http://www.mrbudbud.blogspot.com.

Thanks again, everyone, for making this such a great forum!
UPDATE: They had fallen to third, but after this appeal and others, they have moved back into second. Those “one clicks” are a powerful force. Please keep it up – just a few more days!
how can i pick a server in the US when my server is in Costa Rica? … if you want things to be like they are in the States, …
To run a speed test, data is sent from your local server in CR to another server – usually the closest. Since most of us want to communicate with the U.S. it would be nice to know what kind of connection speed really is available. eg: at this point in time I can get 3 mbps download to a CR server. But that may not be true in the reverse.

Re: “want things to be like they are in states.” No, never said that, just establishing some desires not requirements.
how fast do you want the internet? mine is fast enough to stream first-run movies from chile without a problem.

    do you speak spanish?
Hi,
3 mbps is really frustratingly slow to me. But I’m spoiled and will adapt! Can you run a check at Speedtest.net and report your speed – but please pick a server in the U.S.

Using Pimsleur for Spanish but understand that CR Spanish is different. How much so? I understand the greetings will be different and perhaps less formal? And I guess that kind of learning comes with immersion?

    Thanks for your help.
I have booked flights for a two-week trip in January, so it’s time to get serious about how best to use our time.

Hi, We’re doing the same. (Retirement is 3 years away) Will be in Atenas as base 1/21 – 1/27. Staying at kinda-sorta B&B http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/37923?price=40 You’re no doubt on a fairly tight budget, so Airbnb.com may help you find a place. I also like the fact that we are staying with residents who can guide us and educate us

We’re heading to Jaco and Quepos for a couple days, then hooking up a private two day deal. (Not cheap, but we are gonna get our money’s worth! 8) This forum and Yahoo Groups have good info too.

We’re probably going to spend the rest of the time looking at property in and around Atenas (or not 😕 )

If we think we like CR and can afford it, we’ll probably return at least twice before I retire. Haven’t ruled out Panama yet – or Nicaragua.

“high speed internet” isn’t available in CR. Best I’ve heard is 1.5 mpbs. That’s why Panama is in our sites.

If you want to contact me off board, I’d love to compare notes with you before and after our trips.

    Let’s share!

    Enough with the dead bodies!

Great input so far… thanks to those who have responded.

Lurkers! Please respond (even if it’s a PM) We’re looking for the in-depth answers to questions we don’t even know enough to ask!

    Thanks to everyone so far.
And I’m not jinxing myself by starting a retirement countdown!
