Not trying to offend anybody, but you have to look at possible conflict of interest here. I personally don’t want to give my opinion whether its booming or not. You have three replies, two builders and one also involved with real estate. It would be like shooting yourself on the foot to tell potential customers that what they are buying might go down in value.

Personally, if you can’t determine the state of the real estate market yourself by doing your own personal research, observation, etc (once you are here of course). Then its a bit of a tough luck.

Thanks for the link, crbuilder. I did read about that in La Nacion last Tuesday. Doesn’t surprise me that imports are much bigger than exports. Very few things here are made in CR. Its just an idea that I’m wondering how feasible. I’ve previously been able to import (only once) a shipment to the US, but I used a customs broker and it seems expensive what they charge me. It was also not a food product and the shipment was only a partial of a container. I will definitely do more study, and hopefully find somebody that is doing or have done something similar.

Sprite, how much does a typical customs broker charge for a shipment? I just thought that their fees of almost $700 was a bit high.

    Sprite,

Thanks again for your reply. I’m always a believer that nothing is easy, if it is then everyone would be doing it.

Are you in the central valley? I’m in the Escazu area and if you have some time, maybe we can meet up somewhere. Anyway, if its possible and you have some time, let me know.

    Costaricafinca,

do you have any experience exporting to the US? Thanks.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Sprite,

Are you still a customer’s broker? How hard is it to get into the import/export business? Would you happen to know of any exporters local here in Costa Rica who I can get more information.

I’m glad you have some quality control on your listing. It definitely raises your credibility. That was a funny article.

Can you be more specific how he scams other people? Is he the one selling, or is he a buyer’s agent? Hopefully people know how the con artists works.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

We moved here about 4 months ago. We checked out Blue Valley but unfortunately they were filled up. I checked out the other options such as St. Mary, pan-american, and also in Santa Ana St. Jude. Therefore if you are set on picking BV, make sure you put in your registration papers soon.

On your other issue, you have to face the facts, you need to live inside a gated community with armed guards. Razor wire fence is good, alarms are a plus. Rich ticos do the same, so please don’t be naive. Its just how it is here.

If its all the same, then might as well bring down the appliance since its would have the SAME parts over here. Like I said, I’d rather not pay 2-3x more.

From a financial standpoint, its quite ridiculous to spend 2-3X the cost of something simply because you are worried of it breaking down. As with the parts availability, I don’t think they can guarantee availability of any parts here even if you have a distributor. Basically, if they don’t have the parts, just order in the US and arrange for the part to be delivered here, costly maybe but overall still cheaper and quality is by far better.

I had the same misgivings about vehicles and unfortunately I did not bring in my own car. That’s a different topic, but I have the same opinion. Anyway, goodluck on the move.

    rf2cr,

I thought you are bringing in a container from the US? If you are, I highly recommend that you bring in all the appliances that you already have or simply buy used ones over there. Appliances here are VERY EXPENSIVE EVEN WHEN THEY ARE SECOND HAND. One of the highly recommended shippers here – Barry Wilson, I think, said something that was so true. Bring everything that you can fit into the container.

First, its very costly to replace a lot of household items anyway, so if you already have them – bring them. Second, even if you do end up not using them, simply give them away. Here’s one other item that some have overlooked:

voltage regulators – this would prolong your electronic appliances such computers, tvs, stereos. This is a bit different that surge protectors. However, I use both for my PCs and tv.

Anyway, good luck on your move. We just moved here a few months back and could’ve saved a bit of money had I just brought everything in our house over in the US.

Thanks for the replies. We’re back now and were not taxed for any of the items I brought in. Its actually quite a lot, totalled eight boxes of goods, but mostly assorted items. They did asked us about the items and one guy rechecked our declaration form.

The issue here is that the wording of the Bank letter is just not accurate. I can see the bank’s point of view, which is basically its hard for them to sign a legal document that is basically false and misleading.

I do not want to put all the required funds in a CR bank, since they have increased the required amount. I’ll try to update what happens, but if there’s more advice out there, kindly post or email me.
