either way I take it that he was use[d] to being listened to rather than spoken to…
As usual, you have it wrong. I read many of his posts dating back to well before I joined this forum. And it is obvious – to me anyway – that your characterization is entirely off the mark. It’s shameful that you would feel the need to disparage him when he’s no longer even here to defend himself. Pretty low blow.

Maybe he just got tired of people who do nothing here but complain, complain, complain – and what’s worse, keep complaining about the same damn things over and over. (Sound familiar?)
Funny…. some how I figured you and David would get along splendidly! Did he let you hold his cat? LOL

As for “complaining”…. I guess all those folks complaining about the lack of affordable health care in the US should have been told to be quiet and stop complaining… or is it only issues that YOU deem to be worthy that are permit to be discussed and subject to debate and discourse?

Perhaps we can limit our postings to issues YOU deem worth the time… but then again… you don’t live in CR nor have an investment here…

…David Murray..was wondering what happened to him…
I met David Murray on my last trip in June and he made it clear that he was fed up with some of the retrograde attitudes expressed here by some of the regular participants, so he decided not to participate on this message board any more. He still participates on the ARCR message board.
I too enjoyed many exchanges with David… and no… We didn’t always agree… I’d hate to think he took his ball and bat and went home when others didn’t agree with his experiences, advice, or opinions. I find the use of the word “retrograde” rather funny however! 🙂 I guess it depends if he was using it as an adjective or noun…. either way I take it that he was use to being listened to rather than spoken to… hard trait to break later in life.
Either Do-It Center or take the time and go to shopping areas around San Jose, where the selection is much better.
If willing to head south towards San Jose I’d recommend a trip to Sarchi! Great quality handcrafted home furnishings made of beautiful wood! Limiting your search to the Liberia area will be expensive and provide a very narrow selection. The Do it center (Liberia) doesn’t have a very wide selection and is rather expensive.

Funny… but while shopping for condos in Hermosa and Coco I’ve been quite surprised to see the same furnishings in many of the homes. All Do it center purchases…. none of it particularly attractive or impressive. Having had numerous pieces custom made to size and style in Sarchi I can say it’s worth the time and expense. You can shop for yourself and you’ll find it’s cheaper than Liberia. I guess the prices charged at the Do it center are based on them being one of the only games in town!
Maybe this site needs to have 2 forums: one for “discussion” and one for actual information. Just sayin’.
Great idea! The only problem we all face in CR is that much of the “information” (I’d like to call them facts but that’s impossible in dealing with government in CR) is rather fluid from time to time, place to place, and representative to representative as folks have been finding out with CAJA assessments. The “facts” vary from location to location.

As to this thread I hope it’s purpose is to help people see the possible implications to the current actions of the politicians in CR and to be prepared! Simply accepting these latest moves may very well result in much further reaching taxes and fees down the road. Tread lightly!
This is a topic that has significant implications for expats and Ticos with “vacation rentals”. It doesn’t affect me personally, because I don’t rent my property out ( aside from friends who have stayed there “gratis” or the time I let it be used for a raffle prize in a benefit silent auction). In the future, I may go down that road so I want all the information I can get. If I have to pay taxes, I will do that because it is the law (and apparently has been for a while, just not enforced). Please don’t let this dissolve into a political pissing contest!!
Unfortunately this has much to do with politics… those elected by those without…. that must now be rewarded by taking what you have. Much like the luxury home tax… another revenue stream that placed you on the radar.
Yes, of course, silly me. Posting endless whining messages about taxes on this obscure message board is EXACTLY like what occurred in 1776 and will no doubt have an immediate effect on …. well, I’m not sure what exactly.

Did you all know that every time imxploring posts yet another gripe about taxes an IRS agent earns his wings? LOL

(At least that’s the only theory I have at present as to why he continues to do that).
Read Common Sense my friend…. perhaps the methods of distribution of information has changed in 200 years… but the message and problems have not. History repeats over and over… remember that.

Anything to add to the discussion (topic) or perhaps you’d like to comfort US all with an endorsement of how well managed governments (including that in CR) are and how they never do anything wrong?

Things are getting to a breaking point… even YOU will not be able to avoid the result.
Randall’s article puts things quite simply as far as how the tax is calculated and submitted. However, what are the other implications? Many of these rental properties are being held in S.A.’s, in inactive corporations. If these properties are being used for business, does the status need to be changed? Is this really the bigger issue for expats?
That was the point if my posting. This issue isn’t as simple as sales tax collection or “leveling the playing field” with hotel operators…. many of which don’t seem to be playing by the rules if recent government raids and closures are any indication.

This is nothing more than government looking to open and expand another revenue stream… and you can bet once you’re on their radar they will dig deeper into your pocket! This issue will have other implications as in the one you mentioned… your inactive S.A. (holding corporation for your property) suddenly becomes active…. doubling your annual tax… and you can be sure there will be other facets to this issue that will cost you more! Count on that!

    Bitch… Whine…Complain…Moan.

    Complain…Whine…Bitch…Moan.

    Moan…Complain…Whine…Bitch.

    Repeat ad infinitum.

I’ve never met a bunch who seemed to enjoy complaining as much as you guys. It wouldn’t be so bad if at least you found some new things to moan about (though Scott’s recent rant about the standard boiler plate language written inside his passport did earn some points for novelty).

The whole “Pura Vida” spirit of Costa Rica seems totally lost on you. You must be a lot of fun at parties!

(Assuming you ever get invited to any).
Following that mentality Steve you’d still be answering to a Queen located across the Atlantic! (No offense Scott!) Thankfully others did the heavy lifting while folks of your type sat and did nothing to rise up against overbearing and oppressive governments!

Let folks that have skin in the game discuss the issues while you sit at the kids table seeking the cheapest and least committal method of relocating to CR to take advantage of what CR has to offer. And at the same time escape the mess headed for Illinois and Chicago… the result of VERY poor choices by politicians and governments you’re so quick to defend.

Your apparent total trust and subservient attitude to governments and politicians has been quite well documented in your postings. Just sit back and accept the fact that some of us are somewhat less trusting or foolish.
FYI – As a matter of policy ‘orphan posts’ are deleted after a week…

Like most governments, our government here is totally incompetent and dysfunctional – they will never take responsibility for the disgustingly bloated mess that they are with their obscene salaries and even more obscene pensions – and we should all expect that they will continue to try and suck more money out of our pockets rather than look at their miserable performance, expenses and mistakes…

Great information! Randall has always provided honest, important, and future thinking information here!

The big question then becomes….to what length will the folks in CR go in order to identify rental properties… and once they do… what efforts and lengths will they go to in order to extract money from you?

There was an interesting article in today’s AMCOSTARICA dealing with CAJA assessments. I love this one line… really sums up the way governments operate these days….

“Monthly rates can vary widely depending on how much money CAJA workers think applicants have.”

If that don’t make it clear and simple on the direction things are headed I don’t know what will!

Still love Costa Rica…. just learning how to navigate the waters and fly well below the radar! LOL

Good point…. and yet another example of why applying for CR residency and letting the folks in CR (thru Mandatory CAJA payments) pick my pocket is a non starter at this point. Having several governments already doing so has me quite adverse to allowing another to start… especially since the “service” they’re offering in return is marginal at best!

Desperate governments…. just like desperate people will do rather strange things to survive. To think that a change in passport numbers or residency takes you off the field of battle is not a position to put yourself in when an acknowledged LEGAL means of avoiding the issue exist. If nothing else residency is something they can hold over your head when addressing a TAX liability.

Looks at the recent situation with the US government going after family members for the Social Security liabilities of deceased parents. In many cases the alleged debts were several years old with no prior collection attempts until Uncle Sam went after bank accounts. The word desperate comes to mind when a large government is going after crumbs!

What if you opened account with a US Passport, got residency and changed everything at the bank relating to identification to your cedula?
good question.. and only by going thru the process will this be revealed..

my suggestion.. open up new accounts with your cedula and close any accounts that you opened with a passport.

these are the little things one discovers by actually living here. for example.

with the corporation tax.. many that I had were originally opened with my passport..

then i just transferred the assets out of the S.A. and just let the corp.. wither away on its own.
When you use the term “wither away on its own” I hope you don’t mean just don’t pay the taxes and not close out the S.A. properly. Those type of moves tend to have a funny way of resurrecting themselves when you least expect it…. and costing more then if things had been done the right way. Perhaps not today… or next week…. or even next year…. but at some point when you leave the clock ticking on a government debt…. they come looking to collect!
And with as desperate as governments are becoming… do yourself a favor and don’t place yourself in the crosshairs!

Sounds a lot like the DOT COM bubble all over…. companies putting out their IPOs… having a 500 million dollar market cap over night…. only to find they were nothing more than a “concept” involving a bunch of double talk run by two 23 year olds that used the word synergy an awful lot! Today most of those same folks are asking if you want fries with your order!

The stock market today is nothing more than a PONZI SCHEME with side betting. When the music stops it’s going to be nasty. Unfortunately with the current interest rate environment a lot of folks are dabbling in waters that they have no idea how deep and dangerous they have become!
