ImxploringParticipant
Bad news SELLS papers! If I based my feelings about how well things were going in ANY town/state/country on what was being reported in the newspaper… I’d be living at the North Pole… they don’t have a daily paper there! LOL
ImxploringParticipantblackjackds… We’d all like more police, less crime, an end to world hunger… the whole deal… but that’s not reality. Given the current situation… we can all only do what WE can to address the problem. No sting… just an observation about how each of us view security and safety. Each of us have our own exprience level… and do our best to learn from it.
ImxploringParticipantblackjackds… You started this thread… and have one trip to CR under your belt… eyes full of stars… much like we all did after our first visit. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But take some time and do your homework as you have by joining Scott’s website. Reality will sink in… not in a bad way. We all love CR… for the good and the bad… and deal with both. It’s a learning curve that is shaped by your experiences.
Perhaps a trip to Limon will add to your education… be sure to wear your Rolex and flash plenty of cash around… perhaps even ask the Taxi driver to hook you up with some female company when you arrive… perhaps then return and give us your views on violent crime and defending yourself. I’d be very interested in your experiences then.
Pura Vida… be smart… stay safe.
ImxploringParticipantblackjackds… and you’re thinking is that the folks in CR are going to create better law enforcement and tougher penalties? Do you have some idea when that might happen so I can give up my guns and start leaving my door unlock? Perhaps when Elvis and Jack Kennedy reveal themselves and admit they’ve been living in Las Vegas under assumed names? Just give me a hint… will it be in my lifetime? NOW who’s the dreamer? LOL… Or perhaps a system like Singapore… but then again I’m not sure that a caning for spitting gum out on a sidewalk is the best answer either. And based on the current direction of the world overall you might want to rethink your ideas. CR will be impacted by the current world financial crisis. We’re already seeing that.
American correct, independent however… don’t find either party very appealing… but no lover of guns… just a realist… guns are a tool… and just as with any tool the outcome of it’s use is a function of those that chose to employ it. And please don’t fall for the Obama line about those God fearing folks in PA and their guns…. I’m guessing based on the demographics of the folks that voted for him so overwhelmingly by percentage, that there are MANY more that own and have used guns for less than honest pursuits… and are a lot less God fearing than the people in PA that he referred to! Just think about that for a moment.
As for the idea that gun ownership has some how been the cause of an increase in violent crime in America… I’d love to see the Democratic liberal source you’re referring to. The cause of that increase is social and domestic in nature… and the result of failed policy that rewards poor behavior, takes a band-aid approach to social issues that we now see are impacting the entire world! Social engineering that applies a mathematical approach to people will always be doomed to failure. All men may be created equal… but from that moment on… EVERYTHING changes!
Perhaps owning a gun is not for you… perhaps a tolerant attitude works for you. That’s great. But as the saying goes… a Democrat is just a Republican that hasn’t been mugged yet!
ImxploringParticipantblackjackds… Not every homeowner needs a gun… most would be more of a problem in owning/using one! But if you were a bad guy and had the choice of two homes to break into… which homeowner would you rather confront? The laid back tolerant gringo or the gun owning homeowner that has made it very obvious he’ll use whatever force is needed to defend himself?
Bad guys are like water… they take the path of least resistance!
ImxploringParticipantbjallen… So I’m guessing the answer is to leave the doors open… don’t resist and allow the bad guys to take anything they want? Is that really an answer to the problem? And if so, wouldn’t that in itself be a much BIGGER incentive to encourage bad guys to continue their ways? As well as breed a whole bunch more that see this way of life as an easy vocation?
I for one will take my chances with defending myself and my home. As for blaming the victim… that’s not the case… but as we all know folks that make the choice to live a lifestyle with questionable associations and values are ALWAYS more likely to be the victim of those they call “friends”.
I guess we all have our own values and opinions on the topic… mine works for me. I hope yours works for you. Personal choices about safety and the security of our homes is something many of us take very seriously. It’s not as simple as owning a firearm or installing an alarm. It’s something we all need to be aware of each day, as you would ANYWHERE in the world. We all have our own way of looking at things… and in many ways those judgements define our future. Part of my enjoyment in enjoying CR is the fact that my mind is quite clear on my feelings on this topic, and always has been.

ImxploringParticipantUnion…. Spoken like a true victim! Thank God for folks like yourself that have given up the battle without a fight! It takes the pressure off us the rest of us! As long as there’s easy pickings out there to be had like yourself the chance that I’ll have a problem are reduced! 🙂
Remember… much like wild animals… thieves look for the easy meal… the one without risk nor that much work involved. When you make it more difficult they look elsewhere (ie YOUR house!) Having been well trained and experienced with firearms and their use in difficult situations… I’ll take my chances! Remember… I’m on my home tuff… the bad guy is the visiting team!
I’ll say it again! Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society’s understanding… try to be a little less understanding and tolerant! Might just make a difference!

ImxploringParticipantMaravilla. Some very good points! It’s a shame that people make themselves more likely to be victims through their associations, conduct, and lifestyle! It’s a much bigger shame that these same foolish folks have brought this criminal element into your backyard to feed. You don’t deserve that. I have great neighbors and know that we’re all looking out for each other and understand that keeping questionable company brings problems. I have a line I’ve used for years for such circumstances. “If you don’t like the flies… don’t hang out with S***.” Seems to sum up the problem! I just wish more people understood this very basic idea!
ImxploringParticipantWe really don’t want to shoot them all…. just a few… then hopefully the word gets around! Although I really don’t have anything in my house that someone would want to die for… that’s not the real issue… it’s the fact that someone would have such little respect for my home that they’d have no problem invading it… and for that reason alone… if they come… I will shoot! Perhaps if the cost of such actions on some lowlifes part was being shot… there would be less folks doing it!
It’s easy to blame the victim for taking such drastic action… but remember… it’s the bad guy that brings about the whole situation in the first place.
Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society’s understanding. Isn’t time we as a people stopped being so understanding of bad conduct?
ImxploringParticipantSecurity ANYWHERE in the world is an issue. More so now then ever with the economic meltdown. I for one have NO tolerance for criminals and would not hesitate one second to send them off to hell at the working end of a firearm. As I stated, should the same officials investigate the dead body dumped at the side of my road… I’ll sleep quite nicely knowing the possibility of that issue being solved has about as much chance as any other crime.
That being said… Having good neighbors, being part of the Tico community, being an asset to those around you is much more valuable then fences, gates, or guns! Living a simple lifestyle with very little makes it much less likely that anyone would want the few things I have.
ImxploringParticipantGreat posting Eric! You’ve reminded me of all the reasons I get up in the morning and enjoy life! With all the good and bad in the world… with all the problems and concerns we have… I know there was a reason CR touched me!
I wish more people could see the big picture and look beyond the materialistic world with all it’s trappings. The Tico’s have that figured out… and I hope that never changes!
ImxploringParticipantNot so funny my friend! It’s a common fact here in CR. Good friends (Ticos) lost two dogs when some lowlifes stole some propane tanks. Another lost a dog for a small TV. My plan is to shoot first and let the same police “investigate” the body as those that never seem to solve the other crimes that occur. I have a friend that makes it a point of target practicing when everyone is around… this way the word is out there that it’s NOT a good idea to mess with his stuff… and the funny thing is… he NEVER seems to have any problem!
ImxploringParticipantGreat points 2BNCR! I’ve made many of the same points and perhaps been a little “over the top” in my words.
I think one of the major point people are missing is that in the US this change in people has been around a very long time. The values people have are SO out of whack… and as things get bad (as they are now and going to get worse) people will have NO ability to fall back to any other way of living… because they don’t know any other way! The generation of our grandparents is long gone… sacrifice, hardwork, determination, and a sense of community. There is hope in CR… perhaps the global meltdown will be a wake up to those people in the world that haven’t yet fallen into the trap of consumption that being able to take care of yourself without all the “things” is a much better and maintainable lifestyle! I hope so!
ImxploringParticipantOf course no society can last long without a middle class… they’re the ones working for a living, getting taxed to death, paying the frieght for all those that can’t or won’t contribute, and the folks too busy and confused to see that the “life” they have is nothing more than an illusion! LOL
Government LOVES the middle class… without them the whole scheme falls apart! They’re the fat part of the bell curve, the bread and butter for the greedy politician looking to get rich or “engineer” society. Perhaps the middle class “dream” we see in the US is a good indicator of things to come here. I for one hope not!
NO society can continue when it’s whole economic engine is based on ever increasing consumption… we’re seeing that in the US right now. One “new” economy after another pumped dry (ie The Dot-Com and now the Housing market) and we’re running out of bubbles to create and tap to continue this whole greed and “things” based lifestyle.
There’s lot’s of folks in the US right now with 54″ plasma TV’s hanging on the wall that can’t make the mortgage payment or pay the electric bill that can confirm that very fact!

ImxploringParticipantRelax folks… we’ve been here before! Let’s see what happens when it goes for debate and vote! Best guess, after consulting my crazy 8 ball… “My sources say wait and see”… 🙂
As for the $100 “extend your stay” tourist fee… not likely that they have created a legal PT program for those that want to stay 365 without leaving… that just doesn’t make ANY sense! If that were the case they would have made it more expensive since most folks spend more than $100 to leave for 72 hours!
