Union… good point! I’d lean more towards them cherry picking. Don Oscar and the crew know not all American have a money tree growing back home in the yard… and with the recent economic meltdown… that should be even MORE obvious! Perhaps they’re trying to stay ahead of the curve with these changes… knowing full well that by the time they get the next increases through (perhaps 2030! LOL) a loaf of bread will be 10,000 colones! LOL

I hope Javier is correct on the filing issue and that it locks you in under the current rules. I didn’t think the rules could be applied retroactively… more likely a grammer problem in the proposal that the courts will clarify.

    I agree…. $5K/Month does seem WAY out of line…

WOW! Someone my age (well almost!!) that did the right thing and got out of the rat race early! Nice to know it can be done and was all worth it isn’t it? There were lots of times the wife thought I was nuts like when I told here out of the blue, after ten years of private research, that I wanted to go to CR and build a home! Her response… they “speak spanish there don’t they?” … but in the end… we’re the folks enjoying the sacrific now! Life is good when you make good choices!

Money is tight everywhere. I’m not sure you’ll find a US lender willing to make a loan on a project in CR… even the firms with local operations. Too many projects in trouble these days. You’ll have to sell the project and it’s level of progress to the bank! Perhaps Scott can give you some direction as to someone that can help. Just be prepared to pay for the pleasure of getting your financing… I’m sure the vig will be up a bit with all the problems out there!

As to the proposed changes we’ll have to see what, when, and how much… but If I read it correctly it seems as if they want to apply these new standards to folks that already have a status when it’s time to renew! Might just be an unintentional error… and one the courts would correct. But it does seem it’s directed at current holders… So trying to get your application in before it’s signed into law might not do the trick. I really don’t see this happening… too many folks would not meet the proposed requirements… so what’s next… they go out and round up these folks and ship them home?

It’s a big wait and see… I would wait until the dust settles and see if it makes sense to apply when and IF the new rules are approved… I’d guess there’s about a 50% chance of a change being made to the current rules…. less than that with the new dollar requirements. The $600/mo is really kind of outdated. It should be increased. As for the increases in the rentista status… that something designed with a purpose… they’re trying to cherry pick those folks they want to let in.

Most likely younger than you Lotus… 48… retired with a great pension that I worked hard for…got an education…. saved… planned… made good sound choices… played by the rules…live well below my means… didn’t try to keep up with the Jones’… never felt I was entitled to anything I wasn’t willing to work hard to get… no matter how long that took… all with the correct results for anyone that wants to make the same effort!

Like yourself… I see the good where it exist… and the bad too. As for being right or wrong… only the big guy judges that in the end… but for now I’ll call them as I see them! Pura Vida!

BTW: Play much golf lately with the rain?

Able bodied people that are bleeding us dry is the topic… not the disabled… but once again… twist away my dear!

“you only see black and white, or maybe it’s only white! (if you get my drift)”

So now you’re trying to make me out to be a racist? Wow… you’ve got some act my dear… weak position…. start with the name calling… and when all else fails play the race card… NOW that’s REALLY funny!!! LOL

Wow… someone that sees the world as black and white… how novel! Grey is what’s killing this world… and as for coming off as a know it all…. perhaps we’re twins of different mothers! LOL Just because my opinion isn’t that which you might share doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I agree that the socialism issue is relative… CR is much different than Hugo’s act. My POINT is that socialism will not work in the US because of the current culture of entitlement that we’ve spawned. Until the mind set is changed and folks get back on the right track… it’s the wrong path!

Have no fear about the health care issue however… the Bill and Hillary show couldn’t pull it off with a booming economy… so with the current mess… these no chance in hell!!! So I guess the whole debate is unneeded!

So Lotus… why do YOU think they want the big $$$ changes they’ve proposed to the immigration laws?

Sorry Maravilla…. but you tipped your hand with explaining that you fled the US because it was headed towards being a fascism and dictatorship… that REALLY told me ALL I needed to know about your views. Best wishes on your adventures….

Hey Whitcher… thanks for the kind words…

As you know…. there are lots of folks out there that have ALL the ANSWERS to the problems with society… and are more then willing to fix them… as long as they can use someone else’s money to do it! LOL

Those of us that work hard and do the right thing are VERY tired of seeing our fruits tossed into the hopper to feed those who have no desire to EVER help make it right!

Once again… thanks! Welcome you’ll find this site to be one of the best for straight open exchanges about CR… and Scott is a great source if you’re thinking about CR for investment or retirement! Pura Vida!

Come now Maravilla…. “fascism and dictatorship” are you for real… I had something insulting to say about that kind of a statement… but I’m taking the high road! You do need to take a good look inward however. I mentioned Hugo… a “true” socialist a man of the people (or he would have you believe)…. don’t the terms “fascism and dictatorship” apply more to someone like him than ANYONE in the US government? Perhaps you see something the rest of us don’t? Perhaps you’d like to touch on that. Or perhaps on Oscar… someone I thought would be good for CR… yet he dumps Taiwan for China with all the human rights issues and the damage they’re doing to the environment. Then gets caught with a slush fun intended for other uses that he uses instead to grease folks he has in his pocket… or the latest… open pit mining… and REMEMBER…. this is a man of the people… a socialist… yet human rights and the environment seem to matter little to advance his agenda.

People like me? You mean a REALIST that has no problems with words and terms like hardwork, personal responsibility, self respect, ethics, sacrifice, and effort. One who thinks the more we ENTITLE people the more trouble we create? That rewarding bad choices and behavior just brings more of the same? Someone that believes government is NOT the answer to all the problems society has?

I have no problem with you living in so many different places… it’s kind of cool… but also a VERY good indicator of the type of person YOU are… never happy… knowing better…looking for the utopia that you have in your mind.

My love of Costa Rica is based on the people, lifestyle, and the country itself.

As for the financial mess in the US…. we’ll see how the chosen one addresses it… he’ll be in the big chair Jan. 20th…. let’s see how aggressively he goes after those folks involved…. my guess… he’s a paper lion that will do NOTHING!

All the different kinds you mentioned David… river fishing at it’s best and if you like…. down the Sierpe river to the ocean. Check out the link Trevor put up and see all the different kinds of fish the area covers! The hotel is a nice place right at the end of town on the river and a great jump off point. I LOVE Sierpe… give it a try!

There’s QUITE a big difference between the socialism in CR (and elsewhere) and the system we see failing in the US… corporate misdeeds and a systemic cultural problem are two differant animals. Perhaps you’d like to defend Hugo and his socialist program? The socialism we see forming in the US is doomed with the current mindset. Entitlement is not the means by which you improve society or encourage people to do better. It’s not the means by which people strive to get ahead… but perhaps the failing education system in the US is wrong…. or welfare roles that never seem to go away are in error … or a social security system being bleed dry… or a national debt out of control… perhaps I’m mistaken there too and these are all signs of a positive direction?

Seems you’ve been many places and can’t quite find a place that pleases you… so why the problem with all these wonderful places you speak so highly of?

And your reason for fleeing America is????

    Maravilla….

I hate to see someone lower themselves to being so nasty and insulting as you have been with your words…. “misguided and misinformed”… “bucko”…”ignorant”…”insulting”…. perhaps you’d like to instead debate the issue without the extra verbage attempting to make your point? I’ve done so without having to get nasty as to your opinions. Or perhaps it’s the only way you can find to bolster your position?

You did use one work that was interesting when talking about social security… “entitled”…. and there in lies the problem…. the US has lots of folks that like that word… entitled to everything that hardworking folks have without the bother of working, sacrificing, and making good choices. THERE’S the problem. Perhaps we should give each person in the US, even if they’ve never worked, a nice home in CR next to yours…. and some spending money to enjoy Pura Vida?

When a system continues to reward poor behavior you get more of the same. When there is no downside to making bad choices… people continue to make them. And currently that is the case in the US…. but perhaps you don’t agree with that statement.

There’s a BIG cultural difference between the US and Costa Rica… in the US there’s an attitude of entitlement that people have developed from years of government spending that rewards poor choices. The education system is broken… and thus… the future doesn’t look much brighter. The US has some major cultural problems that will only get worse when continue to hand out everything. THAT’S the problem… and THAT’S what needs to change! The national debt should tell you something about the problem in the US… we cannot continue to fund this path and keep pushing off the debt to future generations. The US is no better than someone living WELL beyond their means and using credit cards to do so. At some point the credit dries up and you’re forced to face the music. What people don’t see is that the US is at that point… and the idea of MORE spending is nothing more than a final shoe shopping trip before the credit card company cuts you off. Sure it feels good… but you’re headed for a big wake up!

Folks in CR seem to place importance where it belongs… with family and friends. They work hard but have a relaxed attitude about life which I like. And if the world fell apart tommorrow… CR would go on pretty much as it does now… in the US folks would be standing around waiting for SOMEONE else to fix their problems. Sure CR has it’s problems… but when you look at the direction and attitude in the US… it’s not something that looks as if it’s going to end well.

BTW… Cheap beer is always nice, but not a good reason for living here…. the cost of living is nice…. and another example of why CR is doing something right…. as for the Ticas… the wife might have a problem with that! As for friends… we have many more Costa Rican friends then expats… but I still like you Lotus! 🙂
