Great Area…. I’ve been there… Take a boat from Sierpe down the river… into the ocean and over to Drake’s bay! Check this site for Grupo Amigos de Sierpe… Jim and Trevor can assist you.

I agree with you Scott… and I for one find that playing by the rules makes sleeping at night much more of a pleasure…

But we ALL know that there are MANY people involved in the RE business here in CR that do not play by the rules. I’d venture a guess that some of the real estate professionals both you and I know are not playing by the rules.

    To think otherwise is foolhardy…

    Scott….

Would the Castro brothers ALSO quailfy as “freely elected politicians” by your standard? Seems Hugo is cut from the same cloth and makes no bones about it! Most dictators come to power as a savior of the people… remember that little German fellow that caused all that fuss in the 40s? A true savior of the people… that went on to cause World War 2…. he came to power as a NICE guy too!

As for GWB… right, wrong or indifferent…. was elected by the people. And the changes and actions taken were ONLY taken due to events that he did not bring about. As for all the actions taken by GWB… I know quite a few people and NONE have been impacted by the changes…. do you know anyone?

And when it comes to the financial mess… perhaps it’s a natural result in a capitalist system… greed being part of that system… but come now Scott… do you really think allowing the markets to fail is a good idea? Plagues are a natural event that add strength to mankind by thinning out the weak… just as a failing food supply controls and strengthens wildlife… should we when allow plagues to run their course without intervention as well?

Lets place the blame where it belongs… EVERYONE got greedy… and when the music stops… we all pay the price! I’m in no way in favor of a bailout that lets those responsible off the hook… perhaps we should look at how the folks in Sweden handled the same problem a few years back…

The real answer to this question is…. “You get off the plane and start selling Real Estate!”

While there are MANY gifted, qualified, honest folks in the RE business here…. the REALITY is that MOST are nothing more than folks that have done just as I’ve stated… they got off the plane and went into “business”. That will become obvious when the FIRST person you meet (or knows someone) that has property for sale!

The rules only seem to apply to those who hold themselves to that standard.

    Hey Scott

I’m not so sure Chevez and all the “changes” in Venezuela are something you want to defend. There will always be sucessful business people that stay behind when a dictator takes over… they’re the ones helping to fund his plans… and line their pockets. I can’t see that Chavez’s plans, actions, changes in government, and above all his military spending are signs of something good in Venezuela in the long run.

As for the “socialization” of big business in the US… a bailout to keep the markets from crashing is a bit different than taking them over in good shape to fund your “revolution” (ego) as Chevez has done. Time will tell if he’s the “savior” the people want…. more likely he’ll be nothing more than a dictator trying his best to make the people BELIEVE they live in a democracy… as he spends the next 25 years at the helm!

Here’s some things to think about!

Revolvers don’t leave those nasty little shell cases at the scene to be matched up later by the police…. a revolver is MUCH less likely to jam at a bad time (like in the middle of some conflict resolution) then an automatic… and last but not least… it’s a lot less expensive to throw a “cheap” revolver in the ocean when used to settle a problem once and for all and replace it then tossing a higher priced automatic!

    Just my 2 cents!

    I enjoy a good laugh….

Traffic….who is it that comes to Costa Rica to live in down San Jose?

Taxes…. an extra $100 spent on a computer or TV every 5 years beats the heck out of $10,000/yr in real estate taxes. Not to mention all the OTHER taxes you pay in the US…. do I HAVE to list them for you?

Illegal aliens… In the states (and in California) the problems is SO big it’s bringing down the state budget. Wake up my friend.

Budget Deficit… so California has NO debt? You better check on that…. and remember… CR has less of a deficit than California… Arnold is working OVERTIME to figure his way out of the projected deficit…. my guess… THOSE TAXES are headed up again!

Smog…. if buses and trucks are so cleaning running in California… why the smog?

As for your experiences in CR with Stay dogs and slutty hookers… perhaps you were looking in the wrong places… up here in Arenal… we don’t see those problems…

As or the wall… don’t have one… it would block my view!

    But wait there’s more….

California… Smog, crime, gangs, traffic, overflowing jails, taxes gone wild, a budget deficit the size of Kansas, illegal aliens, earthquakes, self centered people,….. and that’s BEFORE you remeber it is the land of FRUITS AND NUTS! LOL

Been there…. wasn’t impressed… but to each his own!

Hey Dockers… Are you one of those people that just thrives on conflict? It seems so to me at this point… we went from a healthy debate about real issues to you just attacking everyone else’s thoughts and opinions. You have an opinion on everything (the RIGHT ONE OF COURSE)…. yet they are full of contempt for the thoughts of others. I have to wonder WHY IN THE WORLD you’d be spending so much time on a website about Costa Rica when it appears you have NO LOVE or desire to invest or live here? Only negative comments and thoughts coming from you. Is there ANY reason you’re posting here? Are you in the least interested in CR? Have you ever been here? Do you have ANY desire to learn about a different country, it’s culture, it’s people, or it’s spoken word?

I’m guessing you’re just one of those trolls that sits in front of your computer all day looking for websites with discussion boards and just likes to stir it up a bit. Nothing to add… no interest in learning anything (after all you already know it all how could anyone teach you something!)… just a desire for the human contact (be it through a computer) you so lack in the real world. The ability to sit behind a keyboard and have people answer to you, something that NEVER happens in the real world because you’re a nobody… overlooked… underemployed… disowned by your family even thou they have done everything to help you, they now have washed their hands of you. I know it’s tough being smarter then everyone yet not being able to get anyone to listen, hence the reason you’re here posting…

The problem is that the folks here are just too nice to see that and stop bantering with you. They are truly the type of folks that do well in Costa Rica, open mind, easy going, willing to face change, respectful of others and their culture and so on. You on the other hand are not! They are trying their best to provide you with THEIR experinces and and knowledge and perhaps open your mind a bit to something you apparently can’t (or don’t want to) get. I’ve dealt with tons of folks like you in my life, and I have to say I enjoy the exchange when it’s a good faith exchange… but it appears now we’ve gone past that. So I have ONE question for you…. please take your medication (I know you don’t need it…. just humor me!) … and take a few deep breaths before answering…. before Scott pulls the plug on you and you’re once again forced to find another forum to seek the respect you so desperatly seek to convince yourself that you are normal.

What is it you’re here for?

Let’s make this simple folks. The WORLD economy is slowing down (China/Middle East being the exceptions to some degree)…. Costa Rica real estate is SLOWING down… not down 50% as some might tell you. There are no doubt some properties here that have dropped BIGTIME… but they were over priced to start with and NEVER represented the REAL market and price of real estate here in Costa Rica. No doubt some folks engaged in their own little ponzi schemes and got caught short and have had to sell or walk away. Scott will defend the market… and should…. because for each opinion there is an opposing view. I read Garland’s article this morning. I usually find his views interesting and often on target. I do however feel (here’s my opinion) that his take on things on this topic are a bit over the top!

There is NO doubt the market has slowed here, no doubt that there has been a bit of a correction in REAL value. But just as with the stock market… it’s NORMAL and HEALTHY… no need to run off and panic. I for one am THRILLED with the investments I’ve made here. I looked at a LOT of over priced “challenged” offerings before making the investments I have. VALUE still can be found, GOOD investments are out there… don’t buy into the “Sky is falling” bull!

I’m not here to defend Scott or to tell someone else they’re wrong… as the saying goes… “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”… Real estate as with ANY investment follows the same logic… if YOU see the beauty and the value… YOU are happy! Don’t buy into someone else’s dream or scheme… do your homework, be realistic, and make it happen!

Why would this fellow be showing a FSBO property to start with? Seems he opened himself up to this situation…. and as such lost out on the commission. My opinion…. no soup for him!

I’m not involved in this project… but if memory serves me correctly they marketed these units this way from the start. No change to “fractional” ownership due to a slowing market. I may be wrong but I looked at this project a while back while in Jaco. I seem to remember this was the plan from the start… and as such didn’t interest me. If the point is that they changed the marketing structure because of a slower market (which I agree we’re seeing) I think you might be mistaken.

Remember also that you’re heading off to a country and culture where they value sheep more then women… and being an American women in the current climate there is nothing I’d want to show off. The political winds are rather mixed right now… so keep and eye out for trouble and be ready to cut and run if need be! Best of luck!
