Thanks CRB. What is the travel distance via car from Liberia to San Miguel. I would think that the route would be from Liberia to Nicoya to Carmona to Cerro Azul to Bejujo to San Miguel. No river crossings there…correct?
jamesgoshen4MemberI did just find them – $ 90 for the two of us. Door to Door service from Hilton Garden Inn to Marriott San Jose. Seems like the easiest to do. Little more than the Deldu bus & taxis at the airport but much more convenient.
jamesgoshen4MemberCosta Rica Colonie dropping from 500 to 400, that is a pretty big drop 20 %. Has this historically ever happened. I don’t think so.
jamesgoshen4Member
The Coasts could not be more different in environment, ambiance and amenities. The west coast is much more developed and has numerous amenities in comparison. We are heading to Puerto Viejo tomorrow for some snorkeling. We were there in 2005; I do not even remember a gas station and the road was newly paved to PV only. Limon is 45 minutes away.
The east coast is extremely jungle like and there are significantly more insects. The snorkeling and diving are better, but the surfing is inferior to the west coast. The weather is also quite different – they get a lot more annual rain fall and higher humidity. The ambiance in the east is much more Caribbean / Rastfarian compared to the expat / international west coast. In general it is more primative.
The only way to know is go and never, ever buy anything site unseen in any country.
I have not been the west coast in several years but from I understand it is very expensive compared to the east coast. There is some great surfing in Puerto Viejo during certain parts of the year. The east coast is close to the Panama border that also has some great surfing in Boca del Toro that is not that far away. You need to visit both places. This can be accomplished on a 7 – 10 day visit very easily and too have time to enjoy yourself.jamesgoshen4MemberThanks Scott for that info. You are for the most part the only one that offered any info to my question. The rest of the people only talked about their “war” stories with earthquakes in the NW area.
jamesgoshen4MemberThat is crazy to suggest that one should travel to the Limon area via Turrialba. RT 32 is closed at times at all times of the year because of slides. If the road is closed then you should travel to Turrialba.
jamesgoshen4MemberIt is difficult to find the bus terminal in SJ. However, if you take a taxi and tell them where you are going, they should know where you need to go. If you are planning to rent a car, I would rent in SJ and avoid the taxi and bus transfers. This would save you a couple of hours if budget is not a major concern. The road from SJ to San Isidro de General is no big dea,l just be aware when driving over Cerro de Muerte. Follow the road to Cartago, it is a major highway.
jamesgoshen4MemberI made this trip 2 years ago. Nice ride but a little scary at times. No need to rent a car. You can always take a taxi or another bus. I took the taxi as it was pouring rain and the taxi was about $20…..I can’t remember exactly. You will want to get the bus in SJ in the AM.
jamesgoshen4MemberIf I was a first time visitor to this website this string of messages would turn me off completely. I agree with Sprite as there would be no where to escape the end of the world as we know it. Usually when a post is made many people get involved. Not on this one.
jamesgoshen4MemberWhen you talk about resales, I’m thinking that you are talking about a property that have already been developed (dwelling exists). I am thinking of purchasing a lot and sitting on it for a few years. I would think that a lot of land in a developing “community” would be more protected (squatters) than just buying any lot that is offered.
jamesgoshen4MemberI think your needlessly concerned. As long as you leave the country within 90 days you will be ok. Just remember to have the information that shows you will be leaving CR. If you don’t have this information than immigration will require that you purchase a bus ticket out of CR for a future trip. (This is what I was told). It is my understanding that if you stay in CR longer than 90 days, immigration will block any future trips to CR….but someone may no better
jamesgoshen4MemberMy son had a round trip ticket that was 5 months between arrival & departure. I took him to Panama after 80 days. When we came back into Costa Rica immigration needed to see his flight information. I didn’t not have this info so I had to go into a store at the border that had Internet Access and obtain the required info from Continental.com. This was at the Sixaola border crossing.
jamesgoshen4MemberThe process has been difficult. The money was wired but the bank in CR asked my mom to show proof on where the money came from. My bank in the US sent a fax that it came from our bank account. The bank in CR than said they would transfer the money back unless my wife showed proof that she had a job in the US that could warrant the transfer of funds for this amount.
jamesgoshen4MemberThe transfer is for a tractor for their farm. I wasn’t sure if I was going to have to pay taxes for the amount of the transfer.
jamesgoshen4MemberIf you catch the later buses to Limon just make sure that you can catch the bus from Limon to Cahuita in the later afternoon. You need to make sure that you can get a bus from Limon to Cahuita. The bus stop to Cahuita is a couple of blocks from the stop that you will arrive from SJ and it gets darker around 5 PM.
