I’m sure that Grayline is a comfortable ride with AC and direct service. However, this is expensive at $35.00 for one-way fare. You can travel with the public bus for between $5 – $10 (from San Jose).

If you are spending 10 days in the Puerto Viejo area I would recommend a visit to Bocas del Toro, Panama for sure.

To get to the Caribean side you will need to go to the Terminal del Caribe. You can either get a bus direct to Puerto Viejo that stops in cahuita. Those buses are less frequent than the bus to Limon which probably runs every 1 – 2 hours. From there you can get a bus from limon to Puerto Viejo that stops in Cahuita.

There are certainly developments and areas in the States that do not allow For Sale signs on their properties. There is a beautiful street in a small quaint town in CT on a state route that does not allow for For sale signs because it is an historical district. There is also a lake community that is run by an association. The association has rules that do not allow you to cut down any trees and does not allow for For Sale signs (they may have additional rules). You just need to do your homework. I have seen real estate prices down 20 – 30 % in my area from the peaks of 2006 – 2007. Real estate prices were over priced just like the stock market. I wonder if the real estate market will have the same correction as the Dow (still need 20 – 30%????). I’m sure that the CR real estate market will have some type of correction.

For the frugal explorer you should extend you vacation for two weeks and visit the areas on the Pacific. The places would include Playa Samara, Montezuma, Jaco & Dominical. From North to South. You should rent a car to explore this area. The last post for northern Guanacaste is not for the frugal visitor. The Caribbean side is also very nice & affordable and you can extend your vacation to Panama and visit Boca del Toro. Very nice area safe/cheap. Take the bus from San Jose to Puerto Viejo to visit these beaches and then the bus to Sixaola. Make sure you get to Bocas by taking the one hour boat ride from Changinola. Great experience. You can visit both coast in two weeks but you won’t be able to spend a lot of time in each place but you will see both coasts. There are dramatic differences at both areas.

The spike in the stock market that occurred over the past 15 years is scary if you were betting all-in in 2007. Take a look at the dow jones and there was a huge uptick that occurred in the mid-late 90’s and mostly everyone got onboard calculating how much they would have for an early retirement. If you look at the track that the market was taking in the early-mid 90’s….slow but steady pace the market should be around 6000 – 6500. If you ask me I think the bottom is here or very close. I don’t think it can go much lower. I have always been a very conservative person even when friends and family have mentioned “the stock market has been very good to me lately”.

At least you did not having any kids with this woman. I do not think that you can work legally in the country. I think that you should visit the country for an extended time period….2 months and travel the entire country to find what you are looking for. You can travel cheaply via bus or a mtn. bike and stay in cheap cabinas.

Many of the sellers of these properties have no idea of what their properties are worth. They are very stubborn on what the value is.

FYI…..I love your postings and follow this sight regularly. Scott, are you hiring?

Has the La Paz Waterfall Gardens been destroyed? From the picture it looks like a massive landslide has wiped out the road. I am sure that this road will be rebuilt. I have traveled this road several times because I have needed to travel this route when the Guapiles Highway is closed due to landslides in Brauillo Carrillo. Thanks for posting these photos.

    Are you still feeling tremors?

My experiences in CR have led me to believe that red meat is not usually a good choice in most of the restaurants or supermarkets (like Mas por Menos) that I have visited. I too am a big fan of steakhouses in several cities on the east coast…high end establishments in NYC/DC/Boston. Although I have to admit that I have not dined on Wall Street….is that where the best steaks are served? Can you recommend a good steak in areas outside of SJ or any place that is not a “4 star” resort? If so..please pass on that info.

Forget about steak in CR….stick with either chicken or pork.

Soflodoug…it is great that you start this thread but then you jump on a soapbox and start talking about how you are a man’s man with these girlfriends and that you have checked yourself out for STDs. If I was a stud they way you make yourself out to be I wouldn’t be surfing on the Internet and making a sly comment to someone who responds to your post.
