Al, prices are indeed very high for any kind of appliances in CR. I also have heard about going to David, or to Golfito. What you would have to consider about going that far to buy things like this is how long would the trip take, how much gas would you have to buy, how many nights would you have to stay in a hotel, and how much can you bring back per trip? I understand that you are allowed only $500/per person/per trip, so I would think that considering all of these things may well make the cost of buying in Panama or Golfito less than attractive, que no?

I meant what I am finding in the real world. Fewer flights offered into and out of Liberia to the destinations that matter to me and mine. Higher fares for those fewer flights as compared to San Jose. They may be expanding, but why? Another example is Worry Free Vacations/MLT Travel. They used to fly into Liberia from St. Paul/Minneapolis, DFW, et al, but now they aren’t even coming into Costa Rica any more.

Not only can they accept payments, via debit card, in my local (Arenal) office, but I paying the monthly bill online direct from my bank account is actually very easy. Don’t know about them automatically debiting my account, and never did care for that option, anyway.

sueandchris wrote (in part): “In California we are on a progressive rate scale, starting at 11 cents a Kwh and graduating up to 45 cents a Kwh. The more you use the higher the rate you pay”.

I don’t know what the Kwh rate is here, but I do know that the charge goes up the more you use. Also, I know that many folks here (Ticos and expats alike) go around this by installing two separate meters; when one reaches the threshold, they shut down that circuit, and switch to the other. Ultimately, electricity is only slightly less here compared to the states, at least in our case.

CRF: fwiw, we gave up on the idea of a gas dryer, after all the hassles with our gas stove. Just about anyone will offer to special order a gas dryer for you, but at a premium. Then, you have the problem of converting the system to use LPG, instead of natural gas, plus running a proper/safe line to the dryer itself, and finding a distributor willing to provide you with (again, at a premium) gas tanks of a large enough size to make it worth your while.
