We just had a guest that proved real “SOUL” is a way of life and some of the foods you have grown up with, which are a great part of your tradtions. We just had some blue-eyed Blonde soul that visited with us and they got down. I ate gumbo for days, they cooked rice pudding and some other soul dishes.

This couple introduced me to two people that look like soul who live in our community in Grecia. I never saw them and they have lived here for one year. Well after talking to them I realized that they were not soul.

The reason I am saying this is because their just may be someone who does not look like what we describe as soul but they are. Soul comes in all sorts of colors the common string is this. Corn bread, banana pudding, collard green, grits, peach cobbler pie, pound cake, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, gumbo, jambalya, fried chicken, green beans and potatoes, neck bones, pork chops, ham and red eye gravey. Just to name a few things. oops…dont forget the mac and cheese.

So is it soul or maybe it is southern soul. Soul people know about gospel music, jazz, blues and country. Sopping gravey using your fingers as the tool, sopping with bisquits or cornbread.
Hush puppies, blackeyed peas, fried catfish. Soul is a way of life, people that are about living

Mona this is Jenny whose house you will be renting”surprise, surprise” you can bring sausage and smoked meats in fact almost anything in. We just had some guest that came with cheese and smoked sausage. Gumbo was great. They were a couple from Mississippi with a lot of soul. We had a good time.

We do not have old bay seasoning. Please do not forget the collard green seeds. You will not have any trouble just do not hold them up and ask a questions. Many people ship steak freezer packed in and nothing is said. I have been through customs many times and the only thing they ask about are computers in boxes and other electronic equipment because they make customs money off most of those items. I have gotten sweet potatoes, my guest who came in Nov. put them in his suitcase without any problems. Come on I am going on a diet the week before you get here. Jenny

Sorry, but the Caribean is not really soul. Soul is cornbread, red beans and rice, collard greens, peach cobbler, chitterlings, fish and gritts and discussions about sweet potato pie.

Now, that kinda soul can be a combination of many people but usually soul is pertaining to those who know where you come from and the language you speak. It is not associated with complexion of skin. Soul people can come in many colors. The people in Limon are wonderful and we visit often but it is not what I am talking about. Thanks for your help, it is appreciated.

The best thing to do is come to Costa Rica, get to know people. I can get you in contact with people that have done what you are thinking of doing. They can give you some pointers. The book is a smart start.

When we purchased our home we checked the history of the property got all the paper work and bill of sales the owner signed we signed and paid it was over.

That does not happen in the US. So things are different. You come, enjoy the relaxed life then build your home.

Everyone in the US moves at the, I got to do it today pace. That is not necessary, here you will learn to calm down and wait. If you don’t then you will not stay in Costa Rica very long.

There are still good properties available, with great prices no matter what the hype says. Come on to Costa Rica the living is easy.

I can only speak from my experience as a grandmother and mother. We checked the
Science, math, geography, biology are the same. The level of these courses for my grandson were the same here as in the US. Plus he learned Spanish.

Are you saying that any person coming here to live with children, should only settle in areas that are accessible to International school.

Adjusting socially is more of a problem, dealing with customs and traditions.

I can not speak for any other country but we from the US get a little upset when foreigners come and do not assimulate. If people came to Nebraska from Costa Rica and only lived in the area where the school curiculum was as it is in Costa Rica, we would be offended.

Scott is correct, they do not have an international school but they have some very good private schools here.

If the schooling is good quality schooling they can adjust. Children go to the US from a lot of countries and accommplish wonderfully. The problem here is not access to an International School, the problem is activities after school.

There are not a lot of activities here in Grecia. Most Costa Ricans in this area do not have the funds to allow their children to go bowling, matinees, roller skating, nor have I heard of many here taking many of the classes that children from the US take.

Scott, Activities are limited for adults in Grecia. You have to love what is here and adjust, but that is more difficult for children to do.

Why do you say that? Grecia is a lovely place for young families with children. Grecia is not and ideal place as far as I’m concerned for people that want an active social life and they are young. Of course I know a lot about that I turned 60 over here (smile). Of course I was 59 when I arrived.

My grandson went to school here for 4months so I have a little experience with young children here.

Fran, that is some real good advice. You are right on about finding a real good lawyer. We have worked with the same lawyer for the time we have been here and we have gotten some very good legal advice, which save us a lot of heartache and trouble. Excellent advice Fran.

Make a stop in Grecia. The retired community here is just great. Wonderful group of people. The Costa Ricans are friendly in this area, in fact so friendly we decided to stay over 3 1/2 years ago. Of course we are partial to Grecia area.

Many people have come and some of the prices of real estate are high but there are still a lot of bargins. One womens opinion (smile)

    Lotus,

    Look at the website http://www.laterrazab-b.com
this is a story and it could be yours. We came to Costa Rica looking to enjoy it here and we enjoyed our area so much that we purchased the B&B we were staying in. We rented the main house then a year later we purchased the property. No commisions were paid and we got the perfect buying condition. The deals are here but they are not the ones realestate people are taking you to. You need time and patients to find the deals they are here.

Our area is a picture book, the city is very clean and employment is not excellent but it is much better then in a lot of areas. What will that mean to you, the environment is better when people are working. Most coastal areas the work is seasonal, in our area we are surronded by agriculture and a bus ride to other larger areas making employment opportunities great for the people. Our area is considered the cleanest community in Central America.

On the weekends you will see many of the locals out cleaning the streets. Our staff is Costa Rican and they share their customs and enjoy telling our visitors about Costa Rica.

We have a driver that will drive you to any area you would like to go to at your own pace. We have the best weather in Costa Rica. We have a gurantee at our B&B if you come and decide this is not where you want to be we will charge you for your one night stay and release you from the commitment of staying with us longer. If you have paid us we will give you all of your money back except for the one night you stayed. We are very confident that our B&B is one of the best if not the best in this price range in Costa Rica.

The weather here is the best because you do not have to use air conditioners. Look us up. You can also read comments about us on http://www.tripadvisor.com

Denise, what a nice compliament. You would not believe all the changes that we have seen since arriving in Costa Rica. Your 5 years will go very fast and I am sure by the time you decide to retire some of the problems we are having now will all be resolved by the time you get here. It is a wonderful place to be retired. You meet a lot of great people. Welcome to the clan.

The problems I am talking about are just some of our communication problems. With the CAFTA agreement free enterprise in the telecommunications and insurance industry is suppose to be a probablity and not just a possibility.
