OK… I live in the Turrialba area and out in the “country”. I have killd a couple terciopelos around the neighborhood, but only because I had nothing to catch it with and take it to a local serpentarium, which I usually do. As to fears, I was bitten by a Diamondback when I was five… in Florida, where every poisonous breed of snake in North America is found… but I am not phobic, and I cruise the bush a LOT. Statistically, you have more of a chance getting sharkbit than snakebit. It does not keep me out of the sea. Footnote… most locals carry a machete to cut the ever invading brush, NOT to kill snakes, though they will cop em up. Locals wear the everpresent rubber boots toprotect themselves from bites. Snake fangs have a touh time getting through them, and they usually go near knee high. The trick to not getting bit is watch where you reach, mainly. Oh yeah, I did not die from the rattlesnake bite, even though the bite straddled my lower backbone. I was 1 block from the hospital. MOST bitten folks do not die from the snakebite, by theway. Another tidbit… there are 18 varieties of poisonous snakes in this country, a couple are truely viscious.

I have a question about this… Is the “immigration office” at Immigrations in Uruca, or can I obtain this authorization at the office upstairs at the airport. I would just as soon visit Hell as go to the Immigration center in Uruca if I do not ABSOLUTELY have to.

The bank takes my debit card, makes a phone call, gets out the old fashioned card roller machine, and effects a transfer…. 500 colones…. BoA hits me with a 1% foreign currency fee. That comes out of the transferred amount, NOT out of your BoA account as extra fees

Yes, watchdog gave you a wonderfull route. Longer than trudging through San Jose-Cartago area, but the ONLY way to avoid the city and its horrific traffic. You will not likely make it in a single day without leaving predawn and arriving early evening, but the road is pretty good most of the way. Always be on the look-out for the inevitable hole-in-the-road… or possibly your whole lane gone down the hill.

I have a military checking account at BoA, and both a $$$ and colone account at banco National. I transfer from BoA to my colone account here for $1. Having the military account at BoA is NOT a determining factor, by the way. Also, I am NOT in the military…. was, in a time long, long ago and a place far, far away.

OK, I found the best, cheapest and fastest way to get $$$ here. I have a debit card with BoA… I go to my bank here and they fill out a slip just like the old roller machine for credit cards. They make a phone call to the card company to insure the card is good, then fill in the amount I want, roll it in the machine with my card, and I have money in my account NOW!!! Bank charges me 500 colones. $1!!!!

OK… I went through this with American Airlines last Feb. THEY say the US govt REQUIRES them to insist on a return ticket to board the flight from the States. BULL PUCKEY!!!! They are the only airlines I have found which claim this. I usually carry an open bus ticket from San Jose to Nicaragua, and this served me for years til the last trip down. Just getting out of CR was not sufficient!!! My Govt sees fit to require me to possess a ticket back??? What if I want to explore Central America by bus on the way home? I bought the return ticket, then canceled it at the CR airport before I even left the terminal upon arrival, as per advise by the AA ticket agent in Miami!!!

    Terry,
You might have to change busses in, say, Jaco to go on to Dominical, but you can surely get from Puntarenas to Dominical without going through San Jose.

Terry, I am 57, so we are pretty much on the same wavelength as far as historical lessons learned. You know as well as I…. If she was that unhappy, you are better off without her.
I live out in the country, La Suiza area. Very rural, but not hopelessly in the middle of no where. My advice… keep it simple (KISS). I am not looking for a smooch here, I hope you know the acronym. Anyhow, I will email you and we can keep in touch. I will be happy to spill my guts on most all of my wayward experiances, of which there is no shortage.

What do I miss most living in Costa Rica??? hmmmmm…. uhhhhhh…. well…. GEEZ, I can not think of anything I miss that is even worth remembering. Kinda Freudian, I guess. LOL I firmly believe if you are going to live and be happy ANYWHERE, you gotta live as close to native as possible. There are certain ammenities you just must have, and Costa Rica has all of them I need. If there is any one thing I miss at all, it is the relative efficiency you have in the US. Generally, you can count on it back in the States. You can count on it here too, if you have a frustration fettish.

Try the Kubota dealer over by Immigrations. If they have any, there is a 3 cylinder diesel model I would kill for. Very economical and muchas fuerza
