Alberto – where would one go to purchase shipping damage insurance?
We’ll be shipping a 40ft. container with our truck also.
Arden will be handling the move. Would she know where to get that particular
type of insurance? Thanks.jessicabMemberLet me give you something to think about…We have been going to CR for several years.
We really wanted to settle in the Windsurfing area of Lake Arenal, but when it actually came down to buying property, think again. Undeveloped is exactly what you get.
Applying for water and electricity may take years. And, think about this.
A friend that lives in Nuevo Arenal had a heart attack recently. The only medical that they have is a clinic. He had to be transported to San Jose (4 hours away). The strangest thing that happened, is that the ambulance stopped to pick-up four other patients on the way. My point is, although, the area is very, very beautiful, you must think about medical, shopping, entertainment, etc. being at least within an hour travel.jessicabMemberWe took the advice on the article and from many on this board.
We bought a brand new Isuzu i370 4×4 here in Texas. We plan to ship it,
along with some of our belongings in a 40ft. container.
We also know several expats that have shipped their vehicles and do not
regret it.jessicabMemberDavid – where would you purchase an ozone generator?
jessicabMemberWould it be advantageous to hire an Architect, Attorney or consult ICE before you purchase a piece of property? Someone asked about this before they close on a piece of property and wanted to know if it will be feasible to build on.
I have my eye on a beautiful piece of land in Sabalito (windsurfing) side of Lake Arenal, but there is no documentation about the water except it was noted that there is a water connection on the property, which is coming from the village of Tierras Morenas. The road to the property is a right of way. The power and main phoneline is approximately 670 meters. $10,000 to $15,000 is a lot for power (excluding telephone) and what happens to the cost if others hook into the line you paid for?
All the advice would be deeply appreciated. If this is feasible, could someone recommend an Architect and Attorney in that area? Thank you. JessicajessicabMemberThis question was brought up previously. You might want to read all the answers.
According to tx500sl, a vehicle over 5 years old will be the most costly.
Correct me if I misunderstood tx500sl, but he said to bring a 2004 if you are
moving this year. Next year, it would be best to bring 2005, but a 4-5 year
old car has the lowest import taxes. Over 5 yrs. is the highest.jessicabMemberThanks for the great advice. I will be purchasing a vehicle here in TX and shipping it.
Any particular 4×4 that you would recommend for CR? Thanks again, JessicajessicabMemberIs there a website where I can check the pricing of buying a new vehicle in CR, so that I can decide whether to buy in US and ship to CR or buy new in CR? Thanks.
jessicabMemberNow to add more confusion on the topic. After reading the article on bringing your own vehicle, I was convinced that we should purchase a used SUV 4×4 here and ship it to CR, so I applied for a loan to buy an SUV here. I’m looking, but now I’m not so sure that we should buy here and ship.
Would it be safe to say that if you purchased a vehicle here that most rental car agencies use, such as, Toyota 4-Runner, Isuzu Rodeo, that it would not be the same?
Help, I’m really confused now.

La Cruz is a great town and not far from Liberia.
We didn’t feel threatened in any way.
You may want to stay in the area to test the waters.
The “House In The Heavens” was absolutely wonderful.
The roads were only dirt and very rocky.
JessicajessicabMemberAnother option for flights. I have won on Sky Auction twice.
Bid for your airfare. Be careful of departure days of the week
because the price increases. Also, price increases on certain holiday periods.

They have recently outsourced their repair depot to Mexico. Those that worked in Elgin, IL, were either offered the job move or they lost their job altogether. All in the name of saving $$$s.
How sad is that? Where is the loyalty that a Company has to their employees? It’s very sad.Edited on Dec 20, 2006 08:36
jessicabMemberI’d like to put my two cents in about Dean.
We rented a Geo from him for one month Feb-Mar 06.
Diago was at the LIR when we arrived; not late.
The Geo was good driving with the type of terrain we
had to travel. It was however dusty, because of the tarp
not being air-tight. Around the end of our third week, we
traveled from Arenal to Grecia. The brakes were very weak
and our driver’s headlight went out. We just happened to
be in Grecia at the time and stayed overnight. Diago kindly
brought us a newer vehicle. Whatever went down because of
the tradeoff, Dean won’t rent to us again.
I have scheduled to rent with another company. Dean, I hope
that you feel confident enough about your business to be able
to turn down clients. Sorry, your loss. Jessica from Plano, TX. -
