I was reading that the Costa Rican Coast Guard only has 18 ships that are still in good enough shape to patrol, covering more than 500,000 square kilometers of water off CR’s borders. The annual budget for the CRCG is about $168k US dollars with about 85% going to the Caja to cover wages. With such a measly budget and an immense span of waters to cover, it would seem like a little help could be in order. Additionally, it is suspected that a majority of the drugs being shipped are coming through the waters of the Pacific.

Do I doubt that there is some devious plan lying deep beneath the surface here…not for a moment!

I felt pretty good with my amount of diligence, and as Enduro said there are thousands of results that come up and you have to get many pages into it before you find any negativity. So, I only put down the minimum deposit with Paragon. In my opinion, you make a lot of money in real estate and you lose a lot of money in real estate. I have chalked this one up to a loss after speaking with an attorney in the US. Apparently, Paragon has had judgments against them already, the attorney I spoke to had presented two cases against Paragon and is currently working on a third.

In both of the previous cases, Paragon shelled out a little bit of the money they owed investors and then stopped paying. She said she doubts that her current client will get any money out of any judgment. I have spoken with Pablo and Orlando Diaz and they said they would call me back…you can guess how that turned out.

Probably like a Ponzi scheme, they duped some new sucker and paid a little back to those who were pissed. Unlike a Ponzi scheme, the properties are actually listed in CR’s Registro Nacional as owned by Paragon so there is no way of going after them Criminally. I filed a complaint with the attorney general of Florida and they told me to contact other agencies, who in turn told me they don’t handle that sort of thing. Looks like the legal system in the US is about as good as it is down here in CR.

So, I gave them the benefit of the doubt for a while, now I am moving on, happy that I only lost a small deposit, having learned yet another Real Estate lesson and have already made up the deposit that I lost.

It sucks that they are getting away with this, and I am really sorry for everyone that has lost money to them. Lesson: If it seems too good to be true…you know the rest.

I hope no one thinks that last post was a plug for our website…It is only a blog and there is no money being made by us when people go to the website…just trying to pass on our experiences with food, because food is one of the things we love sharing!

Sucky that people get taken advantage of like that… we ordered two pizzas from Pizza Hut and two orders of breadsticks and got stuck with about a $50 tab. Needless to say, last time we will be ordering from Pizza Hut.

One thing that helps, I have found, is to try to speak Spanish. I don’t mean like Por Favor, I’m saying get some lessons or a private tutor and put forth some effort. Remember how annoying it was in the States when immigrants didn’t even bother to try to speak english? Plus Ticos will really try to help you if you put forth the effort.

My wife has brought her blog down here to Costa Rica, the theme is cheap food, the blogsite is http://www.cheapfoodhere.com. Check it out, we love to eat (cheaply) and like to share with others delicious, cheap food. Also, we do some of our favorite recipes. Hope you enjoy!
