Sorry–$2400 a year for my property taxes.

Just a little perspective here—my property taxes are $2400 a month for my $100,000 house on two lots. I live in a tiny town in NW Kansas. An apple costs almost $1.00. Forget about buying strawberries or blueberries for sure. Plus the cost of health insurance leaves me uninsured.

I am reluctantly accepting the idea that a move to Costa Rica may be filled with challenges beyond my capacity to handle. With that in mind, it gives me a more realistic consideration than that which I had when browsing through internet sites viewing all the beautiful homes, the promise of excellent and affordable health care, the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables leading to a long life, and living among cheerful, helpful, optimistic citizens. I will definitely visit, feel the sun and breeze, look into the eyes of the Ticos, and see if I feel a compelling presence or tap into my intuition which might give me the courage to overcome the promised challenges. Not one to give up easily, you may see my five amazing children and me in a market happily chatting away in Spanish one day.

It seems that experiences are different depending on where one lives and how much money one has. I suppose I cannot get a clear answer on home schooling either. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. It gets more complicated all the time. A first hand visit to some areas of my choice without the kiddos might be the best move now. Does anyone live in the San Carlos area? I read that there is a public school there which made it in the top 20 of all Costa Rican schools. By the way…I am retired and have a pension which would cover by far the required $1,000 a month for a pensionado. Does anyone have a guess on how much it would take to support a family of six living modestly?

Thank you, Scott, for giving me some resources to go to. I thought I might qualify as a pensionado, but now I am not sure with the children. This includes a spouse, but does not mention children. The rentista category does include the whole family, but would be tough to have the required funds in the bank. The monthly amount would not be a problem.
I know, I know…must come and spend a year or so there to make a decision. Just needed to know if making this our new home would even be a possibiliy. Been thinking about Costa Rica for 10 years. Planning to visit in the spring. Thanks again.
