Your story wasn’t all that surprising unfortunately – both the act and lack of response from those around. Its a story you hear way to often. Criminal acts committed in full view of others with little or no reaction.

I hope that event doesn’t turn you off of Costa Rica, but like you say it is your ‘reality check’. It may be beautiful here, with nice weather and generally nice people, but you must be careful.

Don’t bother with Golfito directly. You are limited in your purchase amount and the trip, hotel, hassle isn’t worth it.

Call David @361-0408. I myself, along with many other happy customers have outfitted our homes with the latest large appliances, kitchen gadgets, TV’s etc… All come with the original manufacturer guarantee, delivery to your place (at least in San Jose area), and installation. The prices are the same or BETTER than you’d find in Golfito without the headache.

David covers brands like GE / GE Profile, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung and more. These are all new, (not refurbished) in the box.

Make your life simple.. Call him. He speaks English/Spanish.

There have been incidents and arrests of those that puncture tires of tourists rental vehicles before they leave the airport or agency. While travelling, the tourist discovers their tire has gone flat and pull over. While pulled over, the scum come upon the scene – usually in a veiled attempt to help. Sometimes they are able to remove bags/valuables or outright hold up the tourists. This has been reported a number of times in http://www.amcostarica.com.

It does happen. Just recently it was reported that an average of 4 US passports are reported stolen daily in Costa Rica. There are definitely people here who prey upon those who are more interested in taking in the beauty of the country vs being 100% vigilant. Normally the crimes are not violent, but like any place there is violent crime.

Safety depends on where you go, at what time and how you act.

    Hey Matt,
I was playing inline hockey in Parque de la Paz (SJ) on the weekends til I blew out my knee. It was good fun and somewhat organized. There is an outdoor concrete rink in place. Damn hot in the sun, but a good workout.

Don’t know about the b-ball. I know another guy who plays (league or pickup?), but I think it was south of San Pedro at some college. All indoor. I’ll see if I can find out more.

I’ve also seen in Tico Times an ad for the “Badminton Club”.

    Hope that helps,
    J

I stayed at a friends house in Jaco a few years back, which was about 2-3 blocks from the main street. It was a modest home but nice. Flooding was definitely a problem. The friend was considering buying, but once they discovered rainy season there they were some second thoughts.

heck flooding and infrastructure are problems in San Jose too. Remote or not.

Its strange to think of Jaco as a place for luxury development. I first saw Jaco about 6 years ago. Every so often on the way to Manuel Antonio with friends/family who visit we invariably stop into Jaco. Not for the beach but for the services and to see what was a ‘surfer town’. Its changed a lot in the past 6 years and not always for the best. I haven’t been there in about a year now and I’m not sure what to expect if I went there now.

I’m a little concerned about the infrastructure required at these remote locations. Infrastructure is pretty weak and fragile in Costa Rica. Much has been said about the water issues up north in Guanacaste. Water, roads, electricity and other services are streched pretty thin. If developments like these go forward I sure hope for the sake of nearby residents and those investing that the developers have worked closely with the local municipalities to ensure the infrastructure is sufficient and sustainable.

There’s a place in downtown San Jose called the Del Rey. Has a similar ambiance to Jaco– with the hookers, drunks, drugs and gringos. The hotel motto is “Where it smells like the ocean, without the view.”

On a more serious note, what is the reason for choosing Jaco?

Hi, I’m considering moving to North America. What’s a good area for about the same price range? — Was that too general?

linsld1, you may get more responses by describing what you are looking for and where (central valley, carribean, pacific etc)

Just curious, but if people are comfortable in investing in properties because “the entry gate was very nicely done” – that’s just plain silly. Drive around CR, and you’ll see plenty of nice entry gates to overgrown land development projects that never got off the ground. I know nothing about CR Tropical Properties Inc, but for your own sake do some real investigations.

Check out Termales del Bosque – much less commercial and a nice getaway.
