When did the toll road open, I thought it was projected for later this year?

Is it now open all the way from Caldera to Escazu now?
Also do you know if the entrance/exit near Atenas is open now too?
    Thanks
atenas off ramp is open and well marked..
great road…atenas to multiplaza mall is only 15-20 minutes:D:D
Do you know the small village called Barroeta, southwest of Atenas a few klicks? Is there an entrance to the new tollroad closer to that location then atenas?
Stick with the main rental companies Alamo, Thrifty, Dollar, Avis, Hertz, Poas, Toyota Rents, etc. Newer cars, better condition, fewer disappointments. Also, I definitely recommend 4WD if you are getting off the beaten path.
I have consistent good experience with National Car rental. Not picking the car up at the airport will save you something like 13$ of the rental cost. If you stay at a hotel the night you fly in, National will bring the car to your hotel and you save 13$ in taxes off the entire rental period. National has a good selection of all types of vehicles.

Ione, you seem to know whereof you speak, so let me ask this: What is the quickest way to get to the airport, from the new highway? Get off at LaGarita, as you mentioned? (We had business in Santa Ana yesterday, and got there by turning right immediately after the airport, and working our way down…..then, we picked up the new highway just about 1 km from the business offices we had gone to visit……….that was actually quite easy, so now if I can just figure out how to get to the airport, knowing that reversing this route won’t work, ’cause you can’t make a left turn at the airport coming up from Santa Ana…………
JD,
I am a little bit confused as to your directions or routes.
As I mentioned earlier, the Coyol airport exit is still under construction. You could still use this exit but you need to know how to weave your way through Ciruelas and Coyol to get the backside route to the airport. I would still suggest getting off in LaGarita and that should put you within 20 minutes of the airport. If you are going to Santa Ana, of course that is the best exit for there. The distance and traffic between the Santa Ana exit and the airport is not worth using that route to access the airport.
Don’t know if this helps or not. Obviously this is complicated by the irregular routes necessary to traverse the San Jose area.
I take it the Coyol exit is between the La garita and Santa Ana exits on the new toll way. I know the Santa Ana exit and the back way to the airport past the panasonic plant. I am familiar with la Garita, but not where the exit might be located but that is ok, however Coyol is a new location to me. Sounds like a place I might not have seen since my last trip was november when the toll road ended near Cuidad Colon as I headed west from santa ana. Anything notable about Coyol?

With all respect to the above posters and your preferences..isn’t there an extra percentage tagged on by renting cars at the airport?
I always have the agency drop off the car at my hotel for my first night at no extra charge and avoid the extra cost. I think they charge an extra 20% at the airport for car rentals …unless something has changed recently.
Hopefully Scott will offer us an updated map of the new hwy with directions for off ramps…at no cost of course..hehehe
Well I’ve heard that before but last time I rented at the airport and this time I p/u in downtown SJ and didn’t seem to be much of a difference.
    ~B
It is true there is a fee for an airport rental, even for those just off the airport propery. I believe it is about 13% more than if the car is delivered to your hotel. I got a quote both ways my last trip which confirmed this. Some rental car firms quote a lower rate if you take a cab to their nearby facility to pick it up but I am told that is a gray area and does not always result in avoiding the airport pickup premium.
Thanks, John. What’s the best fare you’Ve found out of Hobby? I’m looking at 1st trikp in May,or would you suggest a different month?
I fly out of Bush, there are three or four non stop flights a day. In the rainy season the fare tends to be around $300 if you buy in advance. May should be a good month, not too crowded and on the hot side and beginning the rains so you will see a bad climate month in my view of things.

Your welcome, let me know if I can help with anything else.

I agree with the recommendation to look near Atenas too. With the new toll road you can get to the coast reasonably fast as well as the airport and CIMA hospital in Escazu. If you need a little cooler climate then you can go just west of Atenas and get to a higher elevation with views of the coast if it isnt cloudy.

I’ve been to CR a few times and am in Houston also. Good to see a few Houstonians heading down to CR. Flights readily available and reasonable off peak with some advanced planning.

    Regards

    John

I have a different view on the economic crisis currently engulfing us. I think the problem is not just the banks, government encouraging all to buy homes but also individuals. People who bought homes they could not afford counting on a greater fool to flip the house to later are part of the equation. Some say they the mortgage broker convinced them it was affordable…but we should all know we cant trust others to make promises that only we are we are required to keep.

Financial literacy is an issue, our schools teach philosophy now not that basics needed to make something in manufacturing jobs nor the math skills needed for every day life. I further blame the government for driving the cost of living and hiring up here so jobs have to be moved to be profitable. When was the last time you heard a politician promise to address the high US cost of living? Health care reform…increases costs to business in the US, cap and trade proposals raise the cost of energy in the US and pushes the oil industry jobs out of the US for green jobs? What makes BO think we are competitive for green jobs with high health care cost, high energy costs and rules on employers in the US?

I agree the US is in deep “poop” as said above. To blame corporate america and the government alone is denial of individuals choice and roles in things though. I think we are seeing the death of life in the US as we know it…and loss of US power due to its financial failings. The US economy based 70% on consumer spending isnt coming back with the state of consumer financials…and now we face rising taxes to pay for the government borrowing which is rocketing up as NASA loses funding for rockets. CR here I come.
why not move into The Villages in Florida if you want an all-inclusive retirement camp? you could have your little golf cart to mosey around the property in. why move here? oh, yeah, i forgot. because it’s cheaper. there’s a nice gringo compound at Lake Chapala, Mexico. they sit around all day waiting for happy hour, then get drunk and make fools of themselves. they stay to themselves, entertain themselves, all within their little camp. that would be my definition of pure hell. and i know a lot of active retirement age gringos who think the same way.
Fla would be the last place Id find of interest…too hot too many gringos lol. Mexico..too many banditos….Im either saying in Houston or moving to CR…. not in a rush to decide…depends to some extent on US politics which may, I emphasize may be changing. I have no children so a place where I can live now that Im active and stay in my own home with nursing health later if needed is my concept for what might appeal to a broad audience. Having sufficent nurse coverage available for 24/7 when needed appears a challenge that a shared pool of nurses in a community might address. I have spoken of the concept before and found some interest. The concept is a single family home focused compound with common facilities focused on longer term health care needs to allow individuals to live in their own home as they age with access to health care at home. Concepts are just that, if there is a market for a concept, the key is really execution in my judgment.
I have not been keeping exact records but, in my 8 years of doing my tour for people thinking of living here, the following list (in order of number of moves) is where the people who have moved here are coming from:
    1. Florida
    2. Arizona
    3. Canada
    4. Texas
    5. California
    6. Other

My SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) as to why the major volume is from these States is; most of these people have moved before. They are less fearful of leaving their comfort zones.
What happened to all those Northeasterns the locals there guessed would head the list? Based upon frequency of flights, Houston has 4 roundtrips a day to San Jose where Newark has 1 this time of year. Not scientific as those from Arizona may well fly though Houston or Dallas to San Jose.

I’ve got a strange one so maybe the brits can help me too. My mother in law, was born in Puerto Rico. Her birth certificate has a different and incorrect birth day (incorrect according to my Mother in law’s mom) due to a fire that burned the original one..(dont ask me why they got it wrong the second time…I wasnt there when they discussed it). Her true birthday is shown on my mother in law’s passport. The question is this… what on earth will CR do if I submit her documents with two different birthdays? Also which would be possible or easiest to change to get them in sinc…? Told you it was a strange one.

Thank you for the additional information. I assume the “medication”(calcium vitamins? is a prescription really required for these anywhere?)is available in Costa Rica but all they asked you to provide in the future is a prescription?
