Thanks Scott! I had done a search but that one did not pop up. We have removed the roof, the bats left and then we put up perf metal screens to keep them out, however they have found another way in so we have a guy up on the roof today combing every square inch. I am going to search for these sonar / squelch type devices.

34% for SS with 9.5% taken out of the salary of the employee. So 24.5% net.

Insurance – approximately 4.2% of their gross wage.

You could contact Paul at Osa Waterworks. While not a pool builder per say he has connections in the area and he has converted one pool to salt water for us and put in the salt water pool at our Casitas. I want to say our current pool with the equipment ran about $16K US – I’d have to check though.

My youngest daughter (now 25) has been to Costa Rica with (when she was 18) and she did study abroad programs in Thailand and Australia. You need to worry just because she is your daughter. Thailand was interesting because she was in a very remote area of the Iron Triangle and was there helping a school that tries to stop human trafficking in the region – bad hombres involved there. We had some sporadic communication – she too was in a big group and the only thing I was concerned about after she got back is that they went into Myanmar (Burma) and they took and kept their passports at the border!

She survived, learned a lot. Now Australia was just one big party but still she worked with the Aborigines and loved it.

They’re kids they will have a great time – just tell her to be alert, be smart, travel in groups and she’ll love it.

The nice thing is, it is much easier to communicate back to the states from Costa Rica and she would tell you that she felt much safer in Costa Rica than in Thailand and Australia.

I believe there is a place in Playa del Coco called Texas BBQ that caters.

I could be wrong, but I have always assumed Subway’s in Costa Rica are franchises and more than likely owned by a Tico. Can’t find any info though.

This is just a guess but I would have to assume you can get divorced any where you want to.

    Hey gang:

Here is a link to the company web site:

    http://www.osawaterworks.com/

Ask for Paul – he’s the owner, bi-lingual. He does solar as well as waste water, potable water and a host of other services. We have used his company on a number of projects and he and his crew do awesome work.

Tell him John from Punta Dakota sent ya – although he may charge more knowing it’s me! Just kidding!
I’ve been to Costa Rica a handful of times and am considering retiring early there. I will rent before I buy. The one thing that concerns me in particular is the cost of electricity. I don’t run the air conditioner constantly here in the states but would not like to see a $300-$400 bill in CR if I can avoid it. I’m going to look at the areas of the Nicoya Peninsula, Manuel Antonio and a couple other areas. I’d like to be within 30 minutes of the beach.

Does anyone have any idea the potential range of cost of installing solar panels on say a 2 or 3 bedroom house? I can’t seem to find this anywhere.

    Thanks!
If you would like I can send you information on a company that does this. They are actually in the Osa but have come up to the NP to do quite a bit of work for me – and they do excellent work. Let me know.
We have a beach home in the southern Guanacaste area with fairly new LG a/c units. We understand they need periodic maintenance and were looking for a reliable a/c person/company that takes care of this. Thank you! Joe M.
Hey Joe!

I have contacted Will to get the information on the guy we use. He seems pretty reliable and at least a little reasonable on costs.
JohnR,

I’m not sure these programs are what I want. According to their web site, Traveler costs either $60 or 120/month, depending on the minutes. They both seem to be geared towards international calling. I need a phone for in-country as I rarely make international calls. But I do plan on visiting our local ATT store and checking these plans out because I realize I might misunderstand something, plus it never hurts to check out all your options. So I thank you for your input!!
No problem – you are correct – these programs save money when calling outside CR while you are there, so if you really just want to call in CR – you can just pick up a cheap phone there – perhaps someone can comment that has done this in the last couple of years but it used to be a CR citizen had to buy the phone but I’m guessing that has changed with CAFTA.

ATT works great in most areas of Costa Rica. No need to be flipping about. Sign up for World Traveler ($5.99 per month) and ATT World Connect ($3.99 per month) and you are all set. Both of these programs allow you to jump on and off as needed without affecting your basic plan so if you are going to CR in October – just call them in September tell them you want to be on these two for the month of September only and that’s it.

I think it makes your basic call about $1.20 a minute to or from Costa Rica and allows unlimited text and data internationally.
